+53 We should respond with "bless you" whenever someone farts or burps, amirite?

Do you know why people say bless you when they sneeze? Saying excuse me when you're the one farting or burping is the correct etticate...

I like the idea that a fart is part of one's soul escaping the body. The rancid, evil part of the soul.

Definitely, also farts and burps happen. But I swear some people burp louder on purpose

I've actually done this for some time with people I'm comfortable with. A girl I know has involuntary, violent hiccups that can be quite awkward in a silent room, so I simply say bless you to ease the tension and she really appreciates it

Makes me smile 😊😊

I actually quite like that idea.

Me too

Time to start blessing my friend's smelliest of smellies.

If a tree farts in a forest and there's nobody around to say bless you, did it even make a sound?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The office is bad enough without normalising farts and burps.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Farting and burping is normal though.

Oh what so microscopic airborne innard particles hitting my olfactory gland doesn't count ?

by taylorbechtelar 1 week ago

That happens every day anyway.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You can just ignore it, that goes for sneezing too

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yep, I never say "bless you", seems weird.

I say gesundheit whenever someone's body makes any kind of expulsion-based sound. Have done so as far back as I can remember.

by Miserable_Cup9891 1 week ago

Makes more sense to say bless you on those occasions because it's a more realistic possibility that their soul is trying to escape the body. Dunno if you've had the privilege of tasting my souls aroma but jeez!

I think we're too busy holding our noses

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I just say "7.3" and give a quick thumbs up.

Iirc "Bless you" comes from when the bubonic plague was around and people would say it as in " may the lord bless you so you don't die" as sneezing was one of the first signs they had the plague.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I want to start doing this

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I already do this. At least to friends. It's fun.

Why would we try to encourage and normalize openly farting in public though? This negative reaction to burps and farms is because... hmm. ... they're gross! Sound gross.smell gross. Are done by gross people who lack physical self control and manners. Our adverse reaction has come about for good reason.

When someone sneezes you are supposed to say Sancho.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I usually just yell out: "10 points!" and go about my day.

My husband does this at work, and his co-workers always respond with, "but I didn't sneeze." I don't know if it makes the situation less awkward, but it definitely draws more attention to the situation since his response is unnatural.

Just say Gesundheit

Not being a believer, I have started exclaiming "you win a prize!" whenever someone sneezes.

In Dutch burp is the same word as farmer(boer), so we always say ‘give that burp a chair'. And in our family when we fart we say ‘sorry that it wasn't louder' Those are jokes that are as old as time, but they will never not be funny to me.

Bless your fart

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You clearly don't understand why people say bless you. Religious people had the notion that sneezing caused you to be susceptible to demons and the devil so it was something that somehow stuck around years later. Your suggestion makes no sense

by Urbandickens 1 week ago

Puleeeze you can't be serious. Just ignore it. No one wants to be reminded they have gas. Jesus 🤦‍♀️
