+28 99% of people who think they can cook a good steak, can't. amirite?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I can cook a good steak for me.

by Funny-Ordinary1869 5 days ago

And that's all that matters.

by Maybelllesch 5 days ago

If you like bad steak and cook yourself a steak it's still bad.

by Cristalward 5 days ago

I think its fair to say you don't like the food in general if you need a hyper specific preparation to enjoy it. Most people consider it "good" in a much wider window of preps because they just generally enjoy steak.

by Noerohan 5 days ago

I suppose but like.... I've never "endured" a Tres leches. If you don't like 90+% then I would say you just don't like Tres leches. You might like it from that one bakery or whatever but that's an exception to the generalization. The general statement, as defined by the strong majority result, remains that you don't like it. If you liked all but a few, then it would flip.

by Noerohan 5 days ago

I never ate tres leches until I got together with my husband, it just never appealed to me. It's his favorite dessert though and he would get it almost any time we'd see it on the dessert menu somewhere. And just about every time he'd be disappointed. I felt bad so I decided to try my hand at making it at home for him. He says it's the best tres leches he's ever had. I don't get why so many places get it wrong. It's not very hard to make.

by Total-Show281 5 days ago

That says more about the quality of the cut.

by Tarahessel 5 days ago

Thank you for the description, but perhaps more importantly, do you know what they did differently?

by Super_Suit 5 days ago

It's chock. Fat's likely not going to render much if actually cooked rare. You probably never had good steak before or were ordering more well done because you didn't like steak.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It's chock full for future reference

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It tasted like chalk? Do you mean chock?

by Alenabartoletti 5 days ago

I would argue that you don't even know what a good steak is, since you've only had one. This seems like a rant about the fact that you hate the steaks cooked by someone in your life who thinks they cook good steak, or how you're ridiculously picky and the people around you are the problem, not you 😂

by Anonymous 5 days ago

This seems more like a "you" problem than a "99% of people" problem. You can't even articulate what cooking method made this specific steak better.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

99% seems high

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Is there a food that people are snobbier about than steak?

by Domingo12 5 days ago

Perhaps it's the quality of the steak and not the preparation with which you take issue

by Relative-Reporter560 5 days ago

so you want more sauces on your steak? thats fine but many people want to taste the authentic flavor of the beef

by dustin79 5 days ago

Perhaps 99% of the folk who've cooked your steaks cannot cook a good steak. As for me, I've had lots of excellent steaks cooked for me, and some by me.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Here is a pro tip: if you want to cook great meat, buy great meat. That is rule number one. Otherwise, salt, butter, oil, and rubs along with a meat thermometer can make even the most incapable cook look like a chef.

by Alenabartoletti 5 days ago

This is why I usually avoid most steaks at cookouts, unless I know the person to be skilled. The same to a lesser degree can be said of burgers. I'm always surprised how bad burgers most folks make really are.

by samantamayer 5 days ago

I can. And when at a Restaurant I have best results when I tell them I want it bloody.

by narcisokuvalis 5 days ago

I had the same experience you had. Tried steaks my entire life ,just to be disappointed. Had one about 4 months ago and it was one of the best pieces of meat I ever had.. But most steak is mediocre.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I'm guessing you had a filet/tenderloin this time...? People talk up NY strips and other cuts, but in my mind there is the filet and then there is everything else. Filet >>> everything else. That is FAR more important than how it's is prepared. If you can get it medium rare with some salt and butter (not terribly hard) it will be awesome in my experience.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

True. Compare the strip section of a t-bone with the filet portion of that same t-bone. It's night and day.

by bofunk 5 days ago

And the 1% say they can't cook a good steak but get the temp perfect every time.

by Ready_Stuff 5 days ago

To me it shows that they aren't over confident in their abilities and are more likely to pay attention to the details of cooking. I've heard people claim to be great chefs, only to get burnt grilled cheeses. I don't like when other cook for me. I know how I like it. And ime people always over season their food which kills it. There are foods that are meant to be over seasoned, such as Indian food, but ain't nobody (besides me) ever say there and hunted down the 20 spices needed for one dish lol. Ask your friend how he cooked the steak and see if you can mimic it. Everyone has unique tastes, I'm glad you found one that works for you.

by Ready_Stuff 5 days ago

Over seasoning problem is real "I make a great steak" and then they pour so much barbecue seasoning it doesn't even taste like steak

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I feel like I make amazing steaks for myself, and whenever I cook it for others, it never comes out as amazing. It's like Michigan J Frog for me

by Hershel14 5 days ago

To cook a good steak you have to start with a good piece of meat, then properly season and prepare, then properly cook. Cooking is just the last step.

by Plane_Holiday_7450 5 days ago

IMO, people try to spice up a steak too much, to me a good steak is steak left out 20-30 mins prior to cooking, butter in the pan, salt and pepper added to steak, lemon juice added to the pan, 1 minute on each side. No excessive flipping, no excessive seasoning, no excessive over cooking.

by Ready_Stuff 5 days ago

It's a pity you weren't able to talk to the chef or watch him/her cook it. There's a a lot of variables: the cut of meat, the method (traditional vs reverse sear), whether it was marinated, whether it had time to rest after cooking, rare vs well done, whether the juices were poured back on after, whether butter was used, I could go on! If you were able to get those details, you'd know moving forward how you like your steak! I'd say some of the most common mistakes at home are low quality cut, overcooking, and not letting it rest enough. That will make it too tough.

by jaydon45 5 days ago

I'll admit I'm no chef, so don't expect too much from me, or you'll just be disappointed.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I think 99% is an exaggeration. But I will agree on the majority.

by Cristalward 5 days ago

Sounds like how you like your steak is just different from 99% of people.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

This is just a "you" problem, if I'm being honest, bub.

by Glad_Negotiation5308 5 days ago

Maybe you just like your steak rare. Most people I'd say don't cook it that way. Ask for it rare next time and see if you like that maybe?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It was a marinated London broil

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It sounds like you're just very picky when it comes to steaks. And also like you're exaggerating. So this one person cooks an amazing incredible steak and everyone else just can't cook steak at all? It's either a 10/10 or just bad?

by NoArcher4242 4 days ago

99%? Why are you being cooked so many terrible steaks? Sounds like all the people in your life can't cook, including you, and all the restaurants you go to are awful.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

You probably don't like steak that much. Steaks not super difficult to cook. At least not only 1% of people make a good one difficult. What temp do you usually get?

by PomeloNaive915 4 days ago

What was different about the one you liked? Cut, butter, seasonings?

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I actually just recently started attempting steakhouse tier meals at home. Last night a I got a high quality grassfed ribeye and hit it with a reverse sear fi shed off with a butter baste of rosemary, thyme and garlic. Served with roasted mini potatoes and asparagus I've gotta say the whole process is pretty fun and pretty much the entire thing is with the oven except for the end. Before that I did the same thing with porkchop minus the butter baste and roasted an apple to go along with it too. Add an apple and to your porkchop and boom it feels 10x fancier. I'm not a great cook but I do enjoy putting these kinds of meals together. I have a really small steak to cook tonight so I'm gonna do the same thing as yesterday but add in beet and carrots.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

i just sous vide the steak or reverse sear. takes the guess work out of it

by dustin79 4 days ago

Lol I think it's you

by OnlyMaintenance 4 days ago

My unpopular opinion regarding steak is that I'd always rather have a burger. I'll even go one step further and say I'd rather have a mid burger over a good steak.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Preach

by Anonymous 4 days ago

You don't like steak, go touch grass.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I can cook a great steak. The key is poking holes through it so that the entire steak cooks equally to medium rare and its great. most steakhouses don't poke the holes and it causes parts of the steak to be overdone and other parts undercooked

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I've eaten in some of the best steakhouses and seen some of the world's best chefs cook steaks and none of them poke holes in the steak because it's completely unnecessary.
