This isn't really unpopular, you're just answering something because some randoms say "x doesn't have talent". It requires "some" talent, but not solely based on. What about the talent people have who aren't pop stars? Some make it, and some don't.

People will dismiss them because they don't make their own music. Which isn't universally true in the first place, but even when it is that doesn't negate them being talented musicians any more than an opera singer not writing their own opera does. Pop music isn't always my favorite but it's such a dumb complaint and smacks so much of "anything teenage girls like is a problem."
