+54 If Superhumans like the X-Men or Incredibles were real. Superpowers would be more versatile than people think. amirite?

The problem is that superpowers usually break the laws of physics. The more you try to make them fit in our understanding of physics the worse you make the problem.

Yeah OP is literally just rewriting the fiction in a way that he likes it better rather than making it real because there's no rule set for real, because it's not real.

Super strength ≠ agility. You can be strong but still be clumsy.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

But super agility = greater momentum = super strength , right ?

by Forward_Swimmer4937 2 weeks ago

Agility /= speed

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

What is agility then

by Forward_Swimmer4937 2 weeks ago

Agility is partially derived from strength, but there's a lot of other factors. Hulk is insanely strong, and this in part gives him the ability to move fast. In theory, he should be insanely agile, because he has strength that far surpasses his body weight and he has good reflexes. However, Hulk is a big target for his opponents. He's not the best at looking at his next three or four moves to maximize his route. Lastly, his movement is explosive and heavy: direction requires significant force. He changes course by using his environment, which is destructive and requires that the environment can support the sudden impact. Lighter supers like Spider-man can rapidly slow their momentim, duck in and out of smaller places, and bounce off of their environment without it collapsing.

You can also be weak and clumsy. I.e. myself

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

They would all have Reality-warping, cos that's the only way their powers will work in the real world

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

True

by emanuel95 2 weeks ago

Also, maybe use your super powers for non-combat purposes. You could do a lot neat things with super strength or telekinesis.

by batzjayme 2 weeks ago

Facts, most superhumans would just use their powers to be the perfect minimum wage workers. Imagine doing Doordash with super speed. 🤣 But then you have normal humans complaining about superhumans taking our jobs. The closest thing to this rhetoric in real life is A.I. (cough cough or Immigrants)

by emanuel95 2 weeks ago

As someone who reads a lot of comics powers are just as if not more versatile than what you listed. Like most characters with super strength have the things you said and same for speedster

by mmills 2 weeks ago

Most superhero fiction accounts for this. For example, "healing factor" or accelerated healing has been attributed to chsracters as diverse as Hulk, Spider-Man, and The Flash. Spider-Man is probably the embodiment of crossover powers, since he has spider-strength, spider-agility, spider-sense, etc. In many universes like The Boys or Invincible, when you're a "super" or "metahuman" or whatever, it's assumed that you're also stronger than average, more durable than average, etc. X-Men are regularly shown to be superhuman in capacities outside of their assigned "power". If anything, highly isolated power sets seem to be the exception more than the rule, set for explicit plot purposes or to provide the character a weakness. Or because the power is derived from a weapon or object. It wouldn't make sense for Hal Jordan tonhave super strength, because he gets his power from a ring.

You mean like superman

The reason why most super heroes have a single super power, or a small group of related powers, is to give them limitations and weaknesses; and to try to make the characters unique.

Well, their laws of physics, causality, and even time work very differently. They are governed by among other things, narrative need.

There is a book called wild card that's basically x-men but instead of mutants they get get their powers via manufactured alien virus that accidentally gets exploded over nyc And spreads into the ocean ans basically everywhere on the planet. If you get disfigured, your called a joker. You might get a superpower but you also might look like the blob. If you get a superpower but it's Lame it's considered a duce. Such examples are a guy who can make a penny float two inches over his skin. Aces are considered cool power still look normal.

This sounds interesting.

A big problem with super powers is the energy needed. The energy from say laser eyes has to come from somewhere. I mean these guys probably need 30-40k calories a day, when they weren't fighting crime they'd be chowing down donuts and candy bars.
