+36 Having a high IQ is a privilege too — but it rarely gets acknowledged, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is 100% true, but society as a whole really doesn't want to talk about differences in intelligence, it makes people uncomfortable.

by Late-Principle4786 2 weeks ago

Agreed, because it undercuts the ‘meritocracy' and ‘it's all fair because we all have a shot' BS narratives.

by Material-State 2 weeks ago

We do all have a shot, but some people have better aim than others. How is that not a meritocracy?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Seriously? So someone growing up in the projects in poverty in a terrible, crime-ridden school and abusive parents has the same shot as a billionaire's son with an elite private education and access to all of his parents' society friends? This is a meritocracy how?

by Material-State 2 weeks ago

Those are two extremes which don't apply to nearly everyone. There will be outliers Iin every system. We can and should attempt to make things as far as possible, but it'll never be perfect and proclaiming that the entirety of the system is completely nullified based on the most extreme examples is absurd.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Don't get me wrong – I back a mixed economy capitalist system, all alternatives have been proven to be worse. I just don't think it should unironically be referred to as a meritocracy.

by Material-State 2 weeks ago

It is unironically a meritocracy. It's just that you disagree with how the merits are defined.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not 100%. IQ is not entirely determined by genetics. It's an elastic metric that can be improved or diminished based on effort.

by miguelwiegand 2 weeks ago

Also, quality of life. Nutritious food, peaceful room to sleep all necessary hours, a regular study/ working habit and hours doing learning instead of just killing time with games goes a long way.

by Fit-Code 2 weeks ago

It can also be affected by diet as a child. So a good bit just goes right back to socioeconomic factors and not personal effort.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

People attribute a lot of what you achieve with a naturally high intelligence to hard work because that fits our rugged individualist western cultural narrative

by This-Discussion-2143 2 weeks ago

Privileged in what way? We live in the age of anti-intellectualsm. Beside the point that IQ is an outdated term and are many different kinds of it. In most cases, being burdened with higher than normal IQ makes you a pariah. So no, it's not acknowledged for a reason.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

We do not live in an age of anti-intellectualism. There is basically an explosion of scientific advancements happening right now. There is also an explosion of intellectual discourse on podcasts, social media, etc.. I can see people looking at distrust of institutions as an argument for anti-intellectualism, but I actually see it as the opposite. Those institutions have become old, bloated, and are failing to respond to a changing society. It is time to either replace them or rebuild them to be more in line with their original intent.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

having a high IQ can definitely open doors The majority of whealthy people do not have above average IQs. Personally i believe that education, upbringing, and environment play a much, much larger role than IQ does

by narciso65 2 weeks ago

High IQ comes with a social trade off and social aptitude is probably a bigger factor in success than IQ Some of the smartest people I know really struggled with isolation and the burden of unmet expectations before burning out completely in their 30s. Without the right environmental conditions a high IQ is more hindrance than help

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

yup

by narciso65 2 weeks ago

Depends on how wealthy you mean. I'd imagine most 'very wealthy' people would be above average in intelligence.

by rauwinston 2 weeks ago

I don't know, personally i'm more inclined to believe that education, upbringing, and environment play a much, much larger role than IQ does

by narciso65 2 weeks ago

Those factors also have an effect on IQ.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It doesn't require a lot of brain power to inherit a fortune.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Why?

by EconomyYellow3953 2 weeks ago

No data here but if you were born wealthy you probably have more opportunities for better schools and learning opportunities. Sure that wouldn't necessarily impact natural born intelligence but that only goes so far if you don't train and study.

by Ok-Stomach2863 2 weeks ago

Well how does someone become wealthy? As a result of something they have done or something that has happened to them (inheritance). I'd imagine that for most people that have become wealthy of their own according, it is more likely it is from intelligent decision making as opposed to luck.

by rauwinston 2 weeks ago

Because contrary to popular belief, it's not 100% about luck.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Most very wealthy people were born very wealthy.

by aurelie40 2 weeks ago

If they've built their businesses from the ground up or invented something groundbreaking, yes. But with their children it can be hit or miss or some people just really do get lucky. There's also a lot of rich people that are business smart but lack common sense.

by Worldly_Lifeguard425 2 weeks ago

Any data to back that claim up?

by Strong-Extreme 2 weeks ago

Probably, idk

by narciso65 2 weeks ago

Where'd you get this from?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The vast majority of the wealth that people have is earn by legacy, not work or intelligence.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

IQ is very predictive of a lot of things. It is highly correlated with income. It is also correlated with divorce. If you have a lower IQ you are much more likely to get divorced. Study after study has shown this to be the case. People with higher IQ tend to get more education, so there is also a correlation there.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

true

by narciso65 2 weeks ago

Citation needed lol

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Then you shouldn't believe things you say, not spread that information

by Sorry_Pin 2 weeks ago

I like yapping

by narciso65 2 weeks ago

Yes they do.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

IQ isn't a static number predetermined by genetics. You can increase your IQ, and it can similarly decrease if you don't keep your mind engaged and challenged. Sure, there is an upper limit to what each individual may be able to attain, but to act like IQ is 100% natural ability is ridiculous.

by miguelwiegand 2 weeks ago

Having two functional eyes, ears, legs, and arms is also a rarely acknowledged privilege. Not to mention bone marrow, kidneys, a heart…

by dylan07 2 weeks ago

That's objectively untrue. Take someone with an IQ of 20, and then someone with an IQ of 160, and see if you notice any differences.

by Extension_Piglet9644 2 weeks ago

Well you definitely don't want to argue with someone with low IQ

by Prestigious_Art6789 2 weeks ago

Maybe IQ is stupid, but some people are definitely born inherently more intelligent than others

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's a decent enough approximation of intelligence and it's the single best predictor of success in life.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It is definitely not an all encompassing thing, but having a high iq does likely mean that you're learning and processing a lot of things much quicker than the average person

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

My husband uses the terminology "native intelligence" which I find to be a better descriptor.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I love starting my day off with a good laugh

by NegotiationPale3024 2 weeks ago

Its one those who got the bigger dick

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Well OP didn't say what you're claiming they did lol.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Are you smart ?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Being smart is a curse because you need to learn how to study? Unlike the dumber people, who don't have to learn to study or can figure it out easier??

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This and when it comes to society's negative things and bad traditions, an average person can just blissfully accept it, but a highly intelligent person will question why it can't be better? Why do we do this terrible thing?

by loralangosh 2 weeks ago

IQ isn't fully real but yeah, being more intelligent is only a privilege

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

IQs can't really be equated to intelligence. But you can equate IQ to good pattern recognition within certain domains of cognition (interpretation of 3D shapes, as an example). I also disagree that either high pattern recognition/ high overall cognition in all domains not limited to antiquated systems (which is likely what you're referring to). So not quite sure if you're referring to IQ or intelligence.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You're nitpicking. He's obviously using them interchangeably.

by Timely-Lawyer-2239 2 weeks ago

It's also a damn curse. How do you explain to an idiot that you actually DO know better?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No crap. So is being good looking lol. People only focus on privilege they can leverage politicaly

by Adorable-Post-2881 2 weeks ago

Sigh, finally someone acknowledges my privilege (hair flip).

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

nobody on this site can speak to that. maybe lol

by New_Sprinkles 2 weeks ago

Nah. The world is not built for smart people. The world is built for average people.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is not a world that values intelligence. Agree with everything else though.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It can open doors but being unable to click socially with other people can make it harder to go through them.

by Magalibarton 2 weeks ago

My family has a wierd genetic split where 1/2 of them are extremely high intelligence and the other half struggle with basic cognition. My grandparents were the source- my grandfather was a certified super genius and my grandmother could barely make it through an issue of Martha steward living magazine- I remember as a kid her spending all day screwing up blueberry muffins for a church bakesale because she couldn't multiply the recipe by 3. While he was getting helicoptered off to major hydroelectric dam projects to double check the engineers calculations using a basic calculator and old school graph paper. I don't know how she would have survived if he didn't handle all the money, paperwork, medical stuff that life requires. The higher intellect bunch has more mental health struggles and the lower intellect bunch are always in some kind of financial, bureaucratic, or legal mess and needing help. I've been watching this all unfold for decades but never really brought it up because it's such an awkward thing to talk about.

by katheryngaylord 2 weeks ago

IQ is meaningless. It was a test designed by an old white man to test white man intelligence. It's old and outdated and highly intelligent people should understand this.

by Worldly-Dog 2 weeks ago

It's good that people who aren't smart don't get jobs where that matters though?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I mean… I guess? But that last line feels a bit wonky. A world that values intelligence needs a massive asterisk. Frankly the world doesn't really value intelligence and that is also why IQ is such a problematic concept in the first place. Is it smart to always figure everything out first? Yes. But that doesn't mean you should. You could be teaching others or raising a child and need to slow down in order for others to learn too. That is t a raw IQ thing. Investing in certain movements or helping oppressed groups. That isn't always going to be the smartest monetary move. There are also large groups that could do more with your time and money. But helping the less well off around us is a moral positive. And isn't necessarily a high IQ thing to do. And of course you have the opposite problems as well. Where a high IQ isn't valued. Especially in highly religious circles and popular groups/cults where having preconceived ideas must remain and go unchallenged. This can get you killed in some places in the world. Or ostracised from society. IQ is a very specific thing in a very unspecific world.

As someone with a very high IQ I would trade it to a normal IQ any day
