+68 Electric rollers, segways, "hoverboards", motorized skateboards, and any similar gadgets should be legal to drive without any licensing, amirite?

Where do you live? None of these things need a license in my state, and to hear they do is... shocking.

Came here to ask exactly this. I've never seen a license required for the listed devices.

If they aren't going to be licensed there needs to be some regulation of it. In my city the rental scooters go 25 km/h and getting hit by someone driving that is going to hurt a lot. I'm not convinced licensing is going to solve the problem of inconsiderate assholes but to suggest getting hit by someone going 25 km/h isn't a big problem is disingenuous. A cyclist going the same speed would also be dangerous as well. That's a decent amount of kinetic energy and it doesn't take much for someone to get a severe injury from the impact alone. Or even if they're unlucky enough to be knocked into traffic.

I agree, but I can't see how that would be enforced without a license - which I think would be a bad idea.

These things don't and have never required a license

I feel like every few days, a kid or teenager gets killed on one of those things in my city.

I own one. Wear protective gear and have fallen a few times. They are kinda dangerous. The big problem is that when you rent one 100% of the time you don't have a helmet. Riding at 20+ mph without a helmet is just begging to be killed. They shouldn't be rentable without some sort of safety gear.

Huh? None of these things require a license to operate.

It's not necessarily about the person and the device it's about everyone else

You could make the same argument to say kids shouldn't ride bikes.

Never heard of needing a license for any of these where I live

Where I'm at, all of those things except motorized skateboards are legally considered bicycles. Anything with 3 wheels or less and a motor under 50ccs (or electric equivalent) is an E-bike.

I agree. I think there are limits here - a toddler should not be riding an electric scooter - but I don't think they should be enforced with a driver's license or anything. You don't have to wait until you're 14 or older to ride a bike, so why wait for an electric one? Especially since a lot of disabled people can ride electric bikes/trikes but can't drive.

Do you agree that, if ridden on a sidewalk, they should be required to travel at walking speed (i.e. max 5mph)? Otherwise, we might as well let cars, motorcycles, golf carts, etc. drive on the sidewalk.
