+54 Kanye West was never all that good, amirite?

by Hazle72 2 weeks ago

Even one of Common's best albums, Be, had his hand on it. So much great music, paired to someone who is seriously mentally damaged at best.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This just in, person with mental issues is good at art…. Tale as old as time, pal.

by Wmertz 2 weeks ago

Great producer, ok rapper who benefitted from having some very talented ghostwriters IIRC

by Vegetable-Hope-9299 2 weeks ago

Graduation is a timeless album

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

College Drop Out, Late Registration, and Graduation are all great. I tuned out after that.

by Sydniemcclure 2 weeks ago

mbdtf has an argument for his magnum opus

by Many-Company 2 weeks ago

The guy legit helped shaped the sound of hip hop. Like it or not.

by fidelglover 2 weeks ago

A statement like OP's can only possibly come from someone who wasn't around or still a child in the early 2000s. The entire sound of mainstream hip hop changed because of Kanye.

by RestaurantLoud 2 weeks ago

Exactly. The man's a lunatic now, but his earlier work was second to none.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Even a lot of stuff from life of Pablo was great. There's no denying he was incredibly gifted musically.

by lourdesharvey 2 weeks ago

Don't forget the backpack

by Beautiful_Shop3806 2 weeks ago

I'd argue he is one of the greatest producers ever and a passable rapper

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not really. Kanye is widely regarded as one of greatest producers in the history of the genre. His beats and production is the strength of his music. He can be a charismatic rapper but he's never been regarded as a great rapper or hidden the fact that he uses writers.

by Ellsworthschupp 2 weeks ago

hugely important to fashion as well

by Crooksmarilou 2 weeks ago

Mfers still dress like bums in earth tones like Yeezy season 1 wasn't over a decade ago. Background characters in his South park episode, became the head of Louis Vuitton. Dude had massive, massive influence.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Nike and adidas still release colorways and silhouettes inspired by Yeezy. They can't get away from him.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I mean…he wears garbage bags and rain boots lol I don't get it.

by JealousDesigner 2 weeks ago

him interning at Fendi, meeting Virgil Abloh there, and helping launch his career is just insane in terms of influence

by Crooksmarilou 2 weeks ago

He was a trendsetter waaaay way before all the stuff you're thinking of

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The dude was wearing leather skirts and stupid stuff like that. I really don't see anybody dressing as Kanye out in the real world

by Clay62 2 weeks ago

He was actually great.

by harberharvey 2 weeks ago

This is unpopular because it's wrong. College dropout -> Pablo is an unequaled run of genre pushing albums with some genuine masterpieces. Outside of music, he had unparalleled success in the fashion world. Sure there are better pure rappers but nobody who rapped/produced/designed at the same level as him.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Thank you!!! We're talking about a dozen years of timeless art he wasn't batting 1.000 but if American culture were baseball he would be Barry Bonds!

by Raheem88 2 weeks ago

Yeah I wouldn't put Pablo in the masterpiece range at all but it was genre pushing in its release strategy

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

it's just less cohesive than his albums before but I still think it's a phenomenal album, I liked ye too but it's very short/hardly an album and still has a few songs i don't like much. everything after that has been garbage though

by Turbulent_Feeling 2 weeks ago

I'd say Ye was the last album before he truly started to just fall apart. Idgaf, Ghost Town is an all time favorite for me

by Careless_Sleep8805 2 weeks ago

Graduation + 808s + Watch the Throne + Beautiful Fantasy = One of the craziest musical runs of all time

by kiley38 2 weeks ago

808s is one of the most underrated projects IMO.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He made Thru the Wire bruh

by Small_Vanilla 2 weeks ago

All falls down >>>> thru the wire, in my humble opinion

by Traditional_Room 2 weeks ago

You're viewing from the wrong lens. No one rates him super high as a rapper. But as a hip-hop producer, specifically as a sampler, dude is on the Mount Rushmore

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He produced all of Jay-Z's best stuff too (and a TON of other great stuff). He was never a great rapper, but the guy was undeniably a genius when it came to making music.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

All of Jay-Z's best stuff is a reach but he produced a lot of great stuff for Jay and others too.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Flashing Lights: Why it's genius: This track blends electronic synths with orchestral strings, wrapped in a hypnotic groove. It's sleek, cinematic, and ahead of its time for hip-hop in 2007. The production is Synth-driven but warm. The beat feels futuristic even now. The string stabs and space between sounds. Kanye's voice is just one element in the mix. Think Blade Runner meets fashion runway. Runaway (but really the entirety of MBDTF). It's a 9-minute epic with haunting piano loop and a 3-minute vocoder solo at the end. It shouldn't work, but it does. The production is minimalist but also lush at once. It's a really good masterclass in layering. It's incredible when you think about the track being about his implosion but presented to you in the most beautiful way. Ultralight Beam: It starts like a gospel service and is intended to be a spiritual experience. It's a Kanye track but he takes backseat to the choir and Chance. The production is gospel + trap + reverb-heavy minimalism. This is the same futuristic style of Kanye but getting into his God Complex.

man he made Graduation tho

by Longjumping_Fail5536 2 weeks ago

Watch your mouth

by Sidney20 2 weeks ago

You must be either really young or trying to spark controversy. Sadly, and I say this sadly because of his actions lately. He is so unbelievably musically talented it's sometimes mind-boggling.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

he was an incredible hiphop & rnb producer. he has 6 classic albums. classic produced tracks. he was that good

by cristal87 2 weeks ago

Revisionist history be whooping yall ass

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The lies!

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

808s and heartbreak was a solid album

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He completely redefined hip-hop production again and again. His first six studio albums were genuinely unique records, each unlike anything he, or anybody else had made. Even the stuff that people were split on when it first came out like 808s or Yeezus, a couple of years later it turned out the risks had paid off, and a host of others were citing those records as influences. Like him or loathe him, there aren't many artists who have reshaped the musical landscape several times over in less than the first decade of their career.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

"Kanye West was never all that good". Disagree. "Its weird people worship him like a god." Agree.

by jonatanbradtke 2 weeks ago

Late Registration and College Dropout are fantastic albums

by West-Willingness-823 2 weeks ago

Dude, College drop out is a classic. Back Pack Kanye is untouchable.

by Chadricktromp 2 weeks ago

He made Graduation

by BisonIcy7957 2 weeks ago

Kanye was never a great rapper. But the impact he's had as a producer is hard to ignore, whether you're a fan or not.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You are definitely really young and weren't around for prime Kanye. Just listen to Graduation

by Haleigh92 2 weeks ago

His music is brilliant. You're saying this because you don't like his opinions on other things.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Mental illness is sometimes entertaining.

by No-Program2948 2 weeks ago

by Skilesgreg 2 weeks ago

college dropout is a masterpiece

by kuvaliseldred 2 weeks ago

I've said this for years

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

And you've been wrong for years

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Which album of his have you listened all the way through to?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I dunno but he seems intellectually challenged. Dead stare with his mouth open. If his lower lip weren't so big I think he'd drool on the regular.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He famously had reconstructive jaw surgery after a bad car accident. Surely you can do better than insulting appearances.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He's accurately rated as a producer, but overrated as a rapper.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I've come to appreciate his music more, especially as apart of my training/lifting playlists, but why people act like he's god I'll never know

by flatleyjana 2 weeks ago

Cult of personality

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

lets not lie on this app now lmao and im one of the biggest kanye haters but this not an unpopular opinion its just straight up not true lmao

by Secret_Context 2 weeks ago

I am entertained by his current persona, but he is definitely a bootleg Nas

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I'm curious to see how you came to that conclusion lmfao Nas of all people

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

SO true. He's the most overrated "artist" of all time

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I can tell you know nothing of hip hop

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I mean have you ever listened to Runaway? Explains my entire life. Anyone who makes an album as good as runaway gets to do 5 HH solutes. Fine 3 solutes

by abigalemacejkov 2 weeks ago

He's more of a producer than a rapper.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Comparing him to rappers is crazy

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Kanye has influenced the direction and sound of Hip-Hop over the last 20+ years. He is a generational talent, that can't really be disputed. Sounds like you are biased due to his recent actions. This is pure revisionist history

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He was a brilliant producer and a meh rapper. But a brilliant producer.

by Moriahmcglynn 2 weeks ago

nah. Im not even a huge hip-hop fan, but to deny that Kanye didnt produce legit bangers, especially in the 00's and early 10's, its legit erasure. The guy is a loon and certified crackpot, but his early stuff was genre defining.

by Heath34 2 weeks ago

Idk man.... I hate his guts now but pre-dead mom, his music was really good

by winstonsenger 2 weeks ago

He was good

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He took old soul songs and put someone else's drum beat on it and sped it up and couldn't get the drums right sometime and got Dres drums from explosive on a track His producer work on the blueprint albums was good and set some trends but he's a piss stain in the urinal at the rock and roll hall of fame

by PaleAddendum 2 weeks ago

100% agree as a rapper. As a producer, though, different story.

by Spiritual-Look 2 weeks ago

I mean, he was the one that treated himself like a god. Famously egotistical. That said, he made a lot of extremely good music. I don't think the average fan held him higher or lower than they did other popular rappers at the time. You can also say people worshipped J Cole, Jay Z, Kendrick, etc. I think you are overblowing how much the general population really likes someone. Most folks are just average casual fans

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Dude helped shape music and more, but I just hope the guy gets himself to a better space in his mind.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

he's an average rapper who has had most of his lyrics ghostwritten but he's a gifted producer that created some of the most influential hip hop to date. look up the records he's made if you aren't familiar, but it's not really an opinion how important he is to the genre. and even though his mental state has deteriorated you can still hear that talent in current projects if you let yourself. rapid fanbases of anything are always going to be annoying but it's dishonest or at least ignorant to say kanye has never been good.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Kanye changed the trajectory of hip hop production and the general sound of the industry in the 2000s and is one of the most influential artists of the 2000s. You can say you don't like him but to say he wasn't good is just factually incorrect, if he wasn't generational he never would've been treated as such. Plenty of other talented artists claim to be as good and influential as Kanye, but very few artists have ever reached his level of popularity and influence.

by Sea_Action_3130 2 weeks ago

Biggie >>>> Kanye

by Obvious_Addition 2 weeks ago

You could say that about anyone if you lift the bar high enough in retrospect. You literally just admitted that he was a talented musician. The only reason you're saying this is because of his antics, which is exactly what he wants. He's not as dumb as he lets on.

by JustSearch 2 weeks ago

Disagree, but I respect your opinion. I don't think highly of Kanye at all. But looking at him thru the lens of his music…he's epic. As far as rappers go, I'd call him one of the GOATs.

by Maximum_Team4406 2 weeks ago

Respectfully, OP, you don't know.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Kanye is a deeply troubled man who's mental.health sharply declined after the stabilizing loss of his mother. That aside, some of his music and techniques are being taught in schools. He was well above average as a rapper and arguably a genius level composer and producer. The worst part about Kanye is that his genius is always going to be carrying the burden of his worsening mental health, forever tarnishing his legacy.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Never was and likely never will be

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is a correct opinion for everything past 2016. Unfortunately every song he made or worked on pre 2016 was very good. Maybe each individual song isn't the best ever but creating that many above average songs and albums in a row is a generational run.

by AwardSelect 2 weeks ago

The only good part of Kanye songs are the parts that he samples from other artists

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

DJ Premiere deserves some of the praise that keeps heaped on Kanye. Kanye was just in his prime when hip-hop became mainstream.

by Ok-Glove7586 2 weeks ago

He did those numbers for 3 summers

by PersonalStomach765 2 weeks ago

I miss the old Kanye.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Among people who aren't into hip hop this might not be all that controversial, but worse, it lacks any compelling argument.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The thing is, for someone like me, I'm not a big hip hop fan. I prefer noisy guitars. So I've listened to his stuff and not been moved. But then I could say that about a lot of hip hop artists. And I could say "this is bad" and I'd be wrong. I'm not into Billie Eilish either but that doesn't mean she's bad. So you think he's "merely" talented - he's not your bag, that's okay.

by Kamryn97 2 weeks ago

Agree. Never heard a song of his that I even remotely enjoyed.

by Best_Point 2 weeks ago

I never liked the guy but at least he was doing his Kanye Best. He tried to avoid getting Kanye Stressed by getting Kanye Dressed into his Kanye Vest before setting out on his Kanye Quest so that y'all could get Kanye Blessed

by Rude-Network-5111 2 weeks ago

Nothing wrong with Ye, I feel as though his best work is yet to come.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

5 classic albums in a row where he changed the landscape of how hiphop music sounds with every album drop. He's the reason we have Future, Travis Scott, ASAP Rocky, Drake, the list goes on. Definitely an unpopular opinion. Learn to separate the man from the music

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Isn't this the same person that changed his name to "Ye"? Wtf does that even mean? That's as bad as Elon Musk naming his kids "X" and "Y" lmao 😂 people with money are so weird. He's probably pal's with Diddy and starred in his "freak offs"

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Late registration and college dropout are definitely that good

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He sure was unable to sing Bohemian Rhapsody. I find it hard to believe he made any meaningful contribution to music.

by Curious-Adeptness 2 weeks ago

I love when people try to tear what people did earlier in their life just cause they got cancelled. Like he changed a generation of music and shaped it lol. His recent stuff might be mid and I've never heard it. But his old stuff was beyond good. He's definitely mentally ill and should get help. But that doesn't diminish his effect on the industry. Cause it changed rap.

by Confident-Manner 2 weeks ago

Kanye is a musical genuis, ye is a GOD!

by Motor_Spray2561 2 weeks ago

lmao. sure there.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Agree. Dude was and is a horrible rapper. Somewhere along the line it became normalized to say he had skills on the mic. Production-wise he influenced the genre for better and for worse. A good chunk of his catalog will age poorly eventually.

by Proof_Resolution6936 2 weeks ago

I've never been a Kanye fan. College dropout was decent but everything else was meh IMO With that said, regardless of how little I enjoyed his music and how even less I respect him as a man (which was before he even went off the deep end) i could never deny the fact that he is absolutely one of the most influential artists of his time and fundamentally changed the sound, reach and feel of hip-hop as a whole. Its like Michael Jackson. Even if you believe the allegations, there is no objective argument against his impact on pop. Its an undeniable truth.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He was influential, but I don't see the artistic value of his music too, and that's coming from someone who was brought up on 90s hip hop

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Who are these equally talented rappers you speak of?
