+67 Working from home has ruined cafes, amirite?

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

This is like when people say they hate traffic without acknowledging that they themselves are the traffic...

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Right? Like, OP is complaining that everyone else is already doing what OP wants to do

by Bergstromlionel 6 days ago

There's clearly a difference between reading a book while you enjoy your coffee and camping the cafe all day to get free WiFi.

by Rippinderrick 6 days ago

OP also said they liked doing their work at cafes as well, so the exact same as who they're complaining about.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

OP says they like to work at cafés too.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

It's not free if I'm paying to be there.

by Daphney10 6 days ago

I would assume they are buying multiple drinks and snacks, if they are buying one thing and camping that is another issue entirely

by Anonymous 6 days ago

It's still an issue even if they keep buying things if there are no tables for everyone else. Imagine riding a ride at an amusement park over and over again while people are waiting in line.

by CombinationMaximum 6 days ago

Yes but I'm the GOOD traffic. I don't rubberneck at accidents or do 20 below the speed limit in the passing lane.

by Glittering-Week 6 days ago

That's why I drive fast 😎

by Anonymous 6 days ago

It's more like I'm complaining while on the public transit option.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

Just complaining.

by Maleficent-Law-4274 6 days ago

So everybody is doing the thing you do and you're mad about it

by Anonymous 6 days ago

He's actually tracking every single person. And it's the same 15 people every single day. It's definitely not a bunch of different people all doing the same thing he does.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Theres a difference between a 30 min sit down for some reading and coffee and 3-4 hrs of work while occupying space. It's also a reason why some coffee shops are losing business. It's the equivalent of someone sitting at a bar ordering one or two drinks hanging out for 4hrs only to leave a tip of $2.

by otishamill 6 days ago

No, I'm not trying to go and make it my office every single day. I'm trying to be able to pop in and sit down and chill. But it's filled with a bunch of corporate dorks working that stay for hours.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

That's... what everyone else is doing. Nobody does it every single day.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Forreal dude, plus how would he know if these people are "coming everyday" if he's NOT going there everyday? This just feels like the pot calling the kettle black. Or "wahh I've been able to enjoy work from the comfort of a coffee shop, but now everyone can do the thing I'm privileged enough to do wahhhh"

by CallAppropriate6310 6 days ago

So you can't go sit and take up a table.... Because people are there taking up a table? Sounds like you need to get there earlier. Then we can have those corporate dorks on here complaining about the book nerd taking up tables and they can't find a place to work. Sorry the world changing pandemic messed up your reading space. If only there were places that encouraged people to sit and read. They could even have books of their own in case you didn't have one. You wouldn't even need to buy them. They would just let you borrow one for a while.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

You're definitely not a dork tho for sure.

by schimmeleryn 6 days ago

Oh no I'm a major dork actually. I like lord of the rings and star wars is like my favorite movie.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

You are mad other people are doing the thing you want to do?

by Maleficent-Law-4274 6 days ago

Not the same thing-I don't want to make it my office 2 days out of the week. I want to be able to go in and chill or read. Cafes are meant for mixed-use, not solely as coworking spaces.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

I guess to be an asshole, how do you know people are going and sitting there all day, every day? Cause if you have actual proof, that means you're doing the same thing, which begs the question, why are you so special that you get to do that and no one else can? Or you don't have proof and you're exaggerating.

by Glittering-Week 6 days ago

How do you know they are there all day?

by Soft_Wing_3882 6 days ago

You're right-I don't know. It's just an observation I've made over the last 5 years.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

'I work from home and every now and then I want to go work for a couple of hours at a coffee shop, its just really annoying because there are people there taking up seats just reading books, they ruined it for me'*

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Sounds like they ain't working from home then....

by Anonymous 6 days ago

But they are soon mich more productive, in their personal lives. On the downside, why pay US labor costs when you can hire someone for way less money outside the US to WFH and do meetings by Zoom.

by SecretGear 6 days ago

But if they're in a cafe, then they aren't working from home....

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Thats exactly what cafes are for

by Responsible-Aide8716 6 days ago

Cafes are made for a handful of reasons. Yea, work is one, but so is taking a break, reading, writing, relaxing. Not everything is work, work, work.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

Well. Start a cafe and implement a rule that people can only stay for 2 hours max. Dunno what to tell you. If the café doesn't have rules against it, which I'm sure they don't I've worked in a few. Cafés are welcome that they would love for people to come and sit there and work all day because they're gonna buy food and coffee. But that's why you're misconceiving things. It is work work work for the café. They need those people there.

by Responsible-Aide8716 6 days ago

"Noooooooo, you're not enjoying the public space correctly!!! You have to do it my wayyyyy!!!"

by Anonymous 6 days ago

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

by Responsible-Aide8716 6 days ago

what do you mean ruined cafes? they have more business than ever now. also. im pretty sure the whole working from home thing ended a while ago.

by Gastongaylord 6 days ago

I mean, some cafes don't have outlets or internet because they don't want people buying one cup of coffee and then just sitting there taking up a table the rest of the day.

by Drewspencer 6 days ago

Working from home 2-3 days a week is still the norm in most major US cities. I don't know anyone with a corporate job that has to go in every single day. And yes they have business but not if these people aren't routinely buying coffee drinks every couple hours. Most are buying one cup-parking themselves at a table, and staying there for hours.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

Ruined Cafe's for OP, specifically

by Anonymous 6 days ago

There are so many cafes out there that its not that hard to fine one that has space available.

by Sporerefrain 6 days ago

Where I live, I have to go out of my way to find those ones. The cafes closest to me are all occupied.

by Quitzonclark 6 days ago

So every table is occupied at every moment, all day long? If so, then forget your current job, you should open up a cafe where you live since the demand is clearly outpacing the supply by a large amount!

by Sporerefrain 6 days ago

People sometimes forget that public libraries exist and make great places to sit and read /s 😆

by Anonymous 6 days ago

That's like hating on left lane drivers doing 40 only you're behind them doing 40.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

So the people complaining about having to commute to an office building and being trapped behind a desk are now commuting to a coffee shop and sitting at a table for hours at a time so they have the freedom of wfh?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Complains the place they like to go is doing great business. Sounds like you don't care about the Cafe and are just inconvenienced.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

They're not doing great business if people are parked there all day and only buying one cup of coffee.

by Quitzonclark 5 days ago

You have no way of knowing that. Most cafés will definitely kick you out for what is considered loitering. Sitting at a table for hours after buying a single item IS loitering. The people sitting there all day are probably buying multiple coffees and food items.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

You haven't answered a single person asking you how you know they are there all day….

by Anonymous 5 days ago

What? Am I supposed to be answering all of these as they come in? I have a life. You're right-I don't know if they're there all day.

by Quitzonclark 5 days ago

"The sad thing is that I used to like doing my work at cafes as well" It was ok when I did it, but when other people do it I don't like it. Sounds a bit hypocritical.

by lorena82 5 days ago

You are about 15 years late on this one

by Drewspencer 5 days ago

So... What are you doing there? What makes you so special that you get to have a monopoly on coffee shops?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

so get there earlier? idk why you're mad people are doing the same thing you're wanting to do lol

by Anonymous 5 days ago

probably you're right, people started making coffee at home

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I've spent a fair amount of time in French cafés recently; they're doing fine

by Anonymous 5 days ago

But you have chosen to work at a cafe too

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Even if you're meeting friends, the guy at the table next to you is in the middle of a zoom meeting so you have to be quiet.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

In Ireland the opposite has happened. Less people in cities or major towns, less people in cafes on lunch break. The last 5 years have been turbulent for cafes.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Oh, the irony and hypocrisy… It's rather deafening

by Anonymous 5 days ago

"I can't do what I want because other people are doing the same thing. Other people should change."

by kunzejade 5 days ago

nah i agree with you, people are saying you're being hypocritical but you're complaining about the frequency of this and you're not saying people shouldn't be able to

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Thank you - exactly

by Quitzonclark 5 days ago

I agree. But I'm blaming the cafe/coffee shop for this. A cafe should never be your personal office. It's supposed to be the place where you can take a little break. Drink an overpriced espresso and read a book. Work on a terrible screenplay that nobody's ever going to read and you won't finish. But working on spreadsheets all day? Absolutely not. But the owners don't put an end to it so what are you going to do?

by ivah40 5 days ago

Exactly-I feel like there's no alternative anymore because this has become the norm. Either offices tell people to come back for a majority of the week or there's nothing that can be done.

by Quitzonclark 5 days ago

Maybe they're people experiencing houselessness, ever think of that
