+56 Golf isn't fun, it's just a way to spend time with friends as you age, amirite?

by Signal-Humor-2682 1 day ago

People need to understand the difference between "Im not a fan of this thing" and "this thing is bad/overrated"

by Anonymous 1 day ago

If something is way overrated chances are some people are not fans. I think it applies here / to OP.

by Alejandra77 1 day ago

And this is one of those cases where it's the latter that applies.

by Impossible-Top-4062 1 day ago

No it isn't. The former applies

by Fancy_Mission_7347 1 day ago

but that doesn't make it not fun lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So say that then

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Don't forget that the amount of roundup they use makes the people living around it have a much higher rate of Parkinson's.

by Glittering_Brain 1 day ago

They said it themselves..."I don't enjoy the game...", ok thats totally fair. But why do they think that means no one enjoys it?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

A good excuse to day drink and smoke cigars with the fellas, count me in

by Izabellapredovi 1 day ago

Also shrooms

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yup People will ask me how I did and I'll be like dude I don't even count my shots I'm just there to have fun

by Utillman 1 day ago

Aka a day of fishing also!

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I do actually enjoy the game, but I do agree with your take on it. It's hard to find time to hangout with friends sometimes.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, but this doesn't even sound like you're saying other people don't like golf. Just you. Like, your friends wouldn't be playing it if they didn't like it. You're playing it because they're playing it. They're playing it because they like it. I do the same thing with most video games these days. I don't really enjoy them anymore, but I play so I can hang out with my friends. They are actually enjoying it though.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, but this doesn't even sound like you're saying other people don't like golf. Just you. Respectfully, this is basically the definition of what an unpopular opinion is.

by Larsonakeem 1 day ago

Yea but he's not even saying his opinion is that other people don't like it. That would be an unpopularopinion. He's just saying that when he goes with his friends, he, personally, just goes to hang with his friends. Ok...

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Oh it's very fun. A little chit chat. A couple of whacks. The only sport where you hit the ball but it doesn't come back. That's something

by lora04 1 day ago

The only sport where the ball just sits there for you to hit at your leisure…..no one trying to tackle, hack or strike you out. Simple game really.

by Specific_Dream 1 day ago

Croquet?

by Bartolettibrend 1 day ago

Other people hit your ball all the time….should be named Cuckquet.

by Specific_Dream 1 day ago

Not during your turn? The balls are there to be hit at your leisure when it is your turn Alright I appreciate the pun. I concede.

by Bartolettibrend 1 day ago

Golf is amazing once youre decent at it. Shooting 110 with your friends can still be fun but shooting 80 with your friends is waaay better

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nothing worse than being behind the group that's shooting 110 and is like 65 years old That was me last Saturday We got on the course at 1:00 and didn't leave till almost 7:00 cuz the people in front of us were going that slow The ranger came by more than once to make sure that we weren't getting upset and that we were still having a good time lol. Yea that bad.

by Utillman 1 day ago

I have found that starting before 9am (ideally 8 or earlier) is typically how you play a fast round. All the hacks start around 10 or 11, and the later in the day you start, the more hacks are on the course. Also, being hack doesn't necessarily mean you play slow, but being a hack who's not willing to get to the course before noon increases the odds you're gonna watch the group in front of you walk to their ball with the wrong club, walk back to their bag, leave their bag on the wrong side of the green…that's what really slows down a round

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Of course it sucks when your no good at it...

by Electrical-Future 1 day ago

Sounds like OP needs a few lessons

by BeneficialWallaby806 1 day ago

I hate golf, I enjoy the beer cart

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That could probably be said for a lot of different games, where people only play it or tolerate cause of the social factor.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

the way some of yall are convinced so many people having fun are secretly not, I just don't get it

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I'm not saying its a lot of people, but I know people who would play anything just as long as its with friends. Even I'm a lonely enough bastard that if you wanna play something together, I'll do it, even if I don't really like it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's true of most hobbies.

by ApprehensiveDrag6724 1 day ago

I regularly golf by myself. Because I have fun doing it

by einarkeebler 1 day ago

I enjoy golfing. Im bad at it but i enjoy it, its fun. You dont like it and thats fine but not everything you think about something is how everyone else feels about it

by Hratke 1 day ago

I like golfing because I like to drink and smoke cigars It gives me a reason to go to the golf course hang out outside for a few hours and get drunk

by Utillman 1 day ago

I prefer tennis

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Vastly different experiences

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think it's one of those things that's fun if you're good at it but the cost to benefit ratio isn't worth it for most people.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think it's probably fun, if you're good at it.

by warren60 1 day ago

If you don't lose 2 balls every hole did you really golf?

by Many-Skin 1 day ago

I go play alone a lot, and still have fun. If you just started, you're probably not very good, and that's why it's not fun for you. Not an unpopular opinion, just an uninformed one.

by kiansatterfield 1 day ago

So you suck is what you're saying

by ParsnipSuspicious 1 day ago

I suck and I have fun

by selena83 1 day ago

You got no better at it then.

by Limp-Discount1819 1 day ago

For me, it's only fun if you're genuinely good at it. I was really good in high school and had a blast as a young adult. As I got older I couldn't drive the ball as far and had inconsistent yardage with my irons; it's no longer fun for me.

by gaylordrickie 1 day ago

You need to beer with golf.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Think of the intellect it must take to find pleasure in this activity: Hitting a ball, with a crooked stick, and then.... walking after it.

by Impossible-Top-4062 1 day ago

I always have viewed it as probably the most outrageously boring sport there is. yeah I'm sure that's an unpopular opinion,. I have a friend in Southern California that is in the medical business and he golfs, and I asked him if he has fun. He told me it's just okay but he does more business on the golf course than he does in the office. It's more relaxed out there with some doctor and under these more informal situations he closes more deals. I'm sure he's not the only one that uses it in this regard

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I have been tempted to get a pool table just to have an "activity" for friends to come over and hang out. I completely understand what you mean. As you get older it seems like people are less interested in just hanging out.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It is definitely a great way to spend time with friends… Being outdoors and getting some exercise, etc.… But being good enough to make it competitive makes it even more fun. Taking just a few lessons from your local pro could make a huge difference.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You can make that argument against anything. Watching movies, pedicures, brewing beer, sitting around and drinking, all boring but an excuse to do as a group and therefore fun.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sounds like golfing isn't for you. I guess that constant improvement I get is what keeps me going along with my crazy obsession over statistics

by Anonymous 1 day ago

"Golf isn't fun to me..." There, fixed it for you.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Golf is the best fun you clearly have no friends

by Early-Future-5701 1 day ago

So, you have an opinion about golf…

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think you just suck at golf, which is okay. Way more fun if you don't suck

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Golf isn't exciting but it's a social sport (for the most part), an activity to do while spending time with others. Golf is very effective at playing this role

by darrell74 1 day ago

Literally can use this for any group activity you don't enjoy

by ardith64 1 day ago

I don't even like golf but golf is still sorta fun enough to count as fun.

by Naive-Structure2335 1 day ago

Most of my friends who love golf, also love the rare times they can golf alone. They LOVE it. Golfing with friends is great too. But yeah this is just something YOU don't like, and that's ok.

by Kreigeradelle 1 day ago

I golf by myself if no one else is available, and I still enjoy it…

by Vonruedenbrooke 1 day ago

As you age there are less and less outlets for competition, and many people have an urge to compete. Golf is the perfect outlet for this. You're mostly competing with yourself and it's impossible to be perfect so there's endless room for improvement. So I'd add to your point that I think some golfers don't love the game of golf, but love competing.

by Silly_Aioli 1 day ago

Its fun to me and I'm not even old yet. I like that Im walking, outside, its relaxes my mind and stress, im also competitive and getting pars on every hole is hard so that in itself it fun for me. Bonus is i can spend time with people or alone

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Golf gets a lot of fun when you become a bogey golfer imo. Once you start breaking 90 I too view golf as more spending time with friends/family than actually enjoying golf. I just get pissed off if I try to focus on golfing well

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Driving a ball just right is such a rush. I wish I was good enough where it happened everytime. From the ritual of placing the ball, the noise it makes when you connect just right, to watching where it goes. I don't even enjoy the sport but I can understand people do

by Anonymous 1 day ago

i enjoy the challenge of getting better at the game, and relish the peace you get when playing by yourself i also enjoy playing and having a laugh with the boys and having a few beers and cigars out in nature to me they are almost entirely different things

by GasOk4110 1 day ago

It's a ton of fun. Once you get decent at it you're basically competing against yourself. What's fun is each time you play a course it's a little different because your shots will end up in different locations forcing you to adjust your strategy for each hole. It is quite literally one of my favorite activities. But I do agree that getting to spend time with friends definitely adds to the fun.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You just discovered what a "pass time" hobby is.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, I agree that it's an unpopular opinion. Many a golfer play with randoms regularly and enjoy playing.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's a great way to be outdoors for 3-4 hours with your friends. So many ways to experience it from very uptight and formal to complete degeneracy

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Male friendship seriously declines after age 35, so I think you're right, but it's hard to say for sure

by Possible-Ad-1117 1 day ago

Golf is still a good tool for my career.

by PotentialFew 1 day ago

No thanks im from the midwest, we arent hurting for water or land

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I don't really like pickleball, that's basically what it is. It's fun but I'm still plenty capable in my body so it doesn't offer enough intensity for me, is why I'm not a fan.
