Because Johnathan Kent would never say that

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I mean, he did though. You just don't like that you think other versions would not say that.

by Clear_Lecture 6 days ago

Because he wouldn't and it's just another example of Snyders gross misrepresentation of the superman mythos.

Yeah other than a forced uncle Ben moment

It added a lot to the character of Papa Kent though. He's willing to sacrifice his own life in order to keep Clark's powers a secret. It even justifies his earlier apprehension about Clark saving the kids on the bus. He's not a hypocrite, he stands by his convictions. However, much like everything else in Man of Steel, the idea is sound, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired.

Doesn't his death send the message to Clark that 'Just because you are invincible it doesn't mean you can do anything that you want'?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Maybe, but this is a stretch. It isn't doing whatever he wants, he's saving a life. Not only a life, but a loved one. Spider-man usually handles this dilemma much better with his uncle bens death and him getting revenge and realizing the slope he could fall down. Superman could have zipped through that tornado and grabbed him in like 1 second where no one would have seen. Or ran out there, covered him, and then just pretend that they got lucky somehow.

It is just to prove pa kents commitment to his own beliefs, if he potentially would let a bunch of kids dies to protect his son, then he can let himself die as well. Still a dumb scene

I agree. If this was real life, I'd say the scene was understandable and doesn't truly reflect who Jonathan Kent is. If he had taken time to fully understand the situation he likely would have reacted different. The first reaction when hearing of a stress situation is usually to consider how it would affect yourself and those you love. Clark had violated the rules which were meant to keep him safe. Much time had likely been spent discussing these. Who here hasn't had a parent react quickly without hearing the full story? Movie-wise, the scene was able to quickly show why Clark had remained hidden and that he was growing up beyond his Earth parent's expectations.

He shouldn't have pushed his son into hiding even when lives are at stake, especially his own. That was just simply the wrong moral lesson. Sure Clark should have taken steps to be discreet and not like showboated around but there was no realistic path where he kept them concealed forever so it wasn't worth letting innocents die to achieve that goal This is why Snyder gets called a fascist - fascists like to come up with situations where they take a hard line against human empathy for some greater good, and those scenarios in this film are fetishistic and unconvincing. Supes could have saved that family without killing Zod, too - the scenes just don't play out in a believable way

"You know what, maybe you should've let those kids die. When there comes a time where my life is in grave danger remember that you should hide your powers and let me die. That's the lesson I'm teaching you. I, your father, am telling you to let people die" - Zack Snyder's Pa Kent

He (the writers) absolutely do.

It's an unpopular opinion to talk about this movie at all

by antoinette65 6 days ago

Was it wrong to insist it is better to let a bus full of kids die in place of the chance of your secret getting out? I think that's an easy yes tbh.

by aniyahbechtelar 6 days ago

We hate him because he was written terribly. Instead of supporting Superman, he holds him back and limits him. He doesn't embrace his son's gifts, and it literally causes him to die. He's written like an antagonist rather than a supporter. The fact that these qualities were given to his father is even more frustrating.
