Exaggerated character design is ugly, amirite?
by Ordinary-Bear5 days ago
I think you might have to risk being "flamed by fandoms" and actually name a few of these types of characters that you are talking about in order for this to hit; you gave us the type that you consider "tasteful" but we don't have a clear example of the other side ijs.

This is definitely a textbook "Unpopular" opinion

Exaggerated character design is beautiful. You can't overuse shape language, King Pin just being a square isn't even the furthest you can take the concept. All it means is that you want to see shapes make a realistic form and not abstraction.

This is a good unpopular opinion. Character design especially for cartoons wants that exaggerated look to show personality, Intent and emotion at a glance. Think of the food critic in Ratatouille. He's entire character design is cranky based off facial expression, depressed or longing for a break of his environment due to the sunken eyes and dark circles around his eyes. Basically you can see his story from a glance without a single word needed.

Some designs are so "unique" they just end up looking like a meme. Give me that old-school Disney elegance any day.
