+53 Cats should be allowed to go outdoors. amirite?

by Mabelledoyle 3 days ago

This is the truth. My fat little man wouldn't stand a chance outside against those wild animals.

Two problems 1. Cats can wreck havoc on local wildlife population eg. Birds in Hawaii 2. Certain regions have predators like coyotes posing a real safety issue for outdoor cats.

depends on the country, cats are a part of the eco system in the UK, they help keep the wildlife balance

In a perfect world, I'd agree. Pets always deserve more outdoor time.

My cat that was born outside to ferals doesn't want to go outside after being brought in. If I open the door she will literally just sit there and stare at me like "what do you want me to do about it?" Absolutely no desire to go back out. No cat should be let out unsupervised unless you want to be scraping your cat off the road because a car ran them over.

If you want them to get eaten by coyotes and decimate bird populations I guess

not everywhere has coyotes

I rather my cat live the 13-20 years lifespan she would inside than average 2-5 years lifespan if she was outside.

Where do you live that outdoor cats only make it to 5? What ravenous wildlife do you have in your doorstep? Our last cat made it to 21 whilst going out every day (not far admittedly cos he was a lazy bugger).

Nope! Tired of feral cats in my neighborhood getting their filth on people's cars and using the lawns as their litter boxes. Cats need to be indoors. Feral cats are a pest. It doesn't matter that they're "cute." They destroy native wildlife.

Yeah screw the native fauna.

Should you be fined? Jailed? What?

My cats have supervised yard time. In the many years they have had this privilege they have each killed exactly one rat.

Cats don't know what's best for them. I understand wanting to let your cat out if they want to go, but you should just learn to walk him/her on a leash. A catio or [enclosed] porch is also a nice option if available

My cat would drive us absolutely bonkers if we kept him in. He loves being outside. Plus, he helps keep the local rodent population under control. But, we live on acreage. Frankly, I think it's cruel to keep _any_ animal couped up. If you do not have space to let them wander outside _safely_, you should not have a "pet".

My cat was a stray (in the UK by the way). He does his absolute nut if we have to keep him in for vets, or even if it's just bad weather. He's always done his business outdoors and just likes to be out. Only leaves the garden once it's dark though as he's very nervy. For a future kitty though, I'd love to harness train for plenty outside adventures and hopefully I'd have a much bigger home.

Nope, feral cats are a huge issue with native wildlife everywhere. Keep your cats inside or don't have cats. Pick one.
