People only care about ‘justice' when they like the victim; otherwise, they cheer for violence, amirite?

Maybe I just need some clarification. When you says, "He deserved it, he was a bully" doesn't that make it fundamentally a different situation? If person A gets attacked and that person is nice, friendly, wouldn't hurt a fly and he is randomly attacked for no reason, that seems much different that person B, who is a bully, enjoys harming others, and likely got attacked because his attacker was defending himself from person B. Unless there's something I missed it seems like you're trying to make Dr. Evils argument of "We're not so different you and I" which is a bad-guy trope that tries to make a false equivalency between the person aggressively attacking others and trying to make the world a worse place and the person who attacks that person to defend others.

Appropriate sized responses should definitely be considered. Like, I'm not sad when bullies get punched, but I am if they got shot. OP might be trying to over simplify things and take all of the context out of an interaction. "Either hurting someone for being rude is okay or it's not" has no context of what the "rude" thing was. Like being part of a peaceful protest can be considered rude if you're opposed to that person's values but also going off on a 10 minutes racist rant, swearing at children and calling them the n word is "rude". One of those I'd be okay with a punch in the face.

I don't think OP is talking about self defense, but along the lines of two wrongs don't make a right

"He deserved it, he was a bully." This was really the line that indicated to me that we're talking about self defense. Bullies be bullying all the time and when a bully then gets attacked 9 times out of 10 the bully did something to instigate it but is also the first to play helpless victim. I'm a middle school teacher and I see this type of thing often. Adult bullies aren't significantly different than middle school bullies.

My system i straightforward. Random person catching violence? Me no like. A person catching violence as a direct result of their unsavory behavior? It's a judgement call, but I generally won't lose sleep. Someone catches violence after consistently engaging in maliciously heinous activities despite how many people it hurts? Yeah I cheer that on. #Free Luigi.

I would clarify that it's not so much whether they just "like them". It's whether they are on "their team" or not. Whether it's racial or political or otherwise.

Thats a really common thing you gotta consider when dealing with people haha

Case in point: The United Healthcare CEO. Like yeah, the victim wasn't a good person, but at the end of the day a murder still happened. You can't just kill people and not expect to be arrested.
by Lazy-Fly46742 days ago
No one expected him to not be arrested, they just recognize his action were only illegal and not immoral
by Anonymous2 days ago
Yes, the irony of my statement is not lost on me.
by Lazy-Fly46742 days ago
And killing him changed literally nothing. Woo. Good job.
by Ok_Sherbert2 days ago
People sure seemed to think he shouldn't have been arrested when it happened.

I'm fascinated by this myself, too. A recent example being that Kyle Rittenhouse guy. For a country seemingly obsessed with their guns and how great their legal systems are, American friends of mine immediately fell into one of two camps upon the verdict being read out in court; "Congratulations!" or "Burn in hell!", and there was no middle ground or third opinion. Much like the rest of today's social and societal issues, I just leave the tribalism to everyone else and continue to live my life worrying about the stuff that I have actual control over or what otherwise directly impacts me.

As a leftist I was concerned at how quickly the left railroaded him almost solely for being on the wrong political football team. That kid had every reason to believe that mob of rioters was going to kill him, and regardless of how dumb an idea it was to be there in the first place, it was absolutely absurd to think he should have just let them kill him. Yes, a right wing numbnuts has the right to defend his life even if it's from protesters whose cause I generally agree with.
by Anonymous2 days ago
If you're trying to harm someone or cause damage, you're a rioter. But otherwise agreed.
by Ok_Sherbert2 days ago
That's because they view the "violence" as an extension of justice You misconstrue believing in justice with believing in non violence and pacifism, which people who value justice typically aren't
by Anonymous2 days ago
Well, some people do deserve it while others don't. Many people overreact and hurt people that don't, that I'll agree with. I'll also agree with the "my side/team" idea that makes this all murky. But there's still definitely people that deserve it.

This is the "we're not so different" villain speech. People tend to take the facts they have, but there is a bias in judgment. Popular people, pretty people, people you know, people you like. Everyone, even strangers, make biased choices. You wear glasses? Juries will view you better? You fit the stereotype of a "good one" for your race and certain demographics will favor you. You're conventionally attractive? Well it's your lucky day because you're gonna get an easier punishment. The majority of bias occurs without you even realizing it. Including this judgment of opinion. You've favored yourself and a small elite group as "better' then the majority. It's impossible to completely remove bias. But popularity is only a portion and not as weighty as you'd wish it was. There's a reason Chris Brown still performs. And largely it's because of women who think he's hot and men who idolize him forgiving his negative behavior. Because that's enough money to keep him employed.

You're right. It's really quite pathetic.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Like people thinking murder is wrong but allowing it as a punishment. Like people thinking that racism against a majority group isn't really racism. Like people asking for compassion when their friends mess up and demanding harsh punishment when anybody else messes up. We label people as 'bad' so that we can dehumanize them.

There are several obituaries I am looking forward to waking up and seeing, I'll tell you that much

Welcome to the jungle.

this is also true in real life

Isn't it human nature to care more about family and friends than complete strangers
by Anonymous2 days ago
Nah, I'm AuDHD. I really do just care about justice lol 😂

Moral tribalism is inherently hierarchical and unjust. A lot of people have a "rules for thee (undesirable people/population) and not for me (people that society views favorably; the privileged, either financially, socially, etc.).
by Anonymous2 days ago
Most people operate at a mental level roughly equivalent to middelschoolers.
by Ok_Category2 days ago
Sounds like you are describing Trumpanzees
by Anonymous2 days ago
Depends who it is. If it's someone who is bigoted or fascist I always cheer for their demise. If it's someone I just have beef with for petty reasons, I'd rather them not be physically hurt.
by Away-Project-60012 days ago
So you want someone to be hurt or killed for voting for Trump? Yikes. Sincerely, A lifelong democrat
by Anonymous2 days ago
Hmmm, you used many words but failed to say anything past vague and broad statements. You start of with "justice" then start talking about being "rude or offensive" then talk about actual violence. Can you give some examples.
by Anonymous2 days ago
And?
by sjohnson2 days ago
And it's a stupid system to base ur morality off
by Anonymous2 days ago
Depends on who you like.
by sjohnson2 days ago
People love to see others brought down, and they'll say it's just justice. People are bloodthirsty and you can see why public executions used to be popular.
by Anonymous2 days ago
I'm sorry OP but I always cheer for justice. You have a small minded or perhaps narcissistic mentality here.
