+91 There's nothing edgy or unique about tattoos anymore, amirite?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Face tattoos are still pretty edgy

by Friendly_Loan_5702 5 days ago

This is true haha I stand corrected

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Not really, a ton of homeless people in downtown sf have them.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I dont see how that's an argument against them being edgy lmaaaoo

by erickacarroll 5 days ago

Is it edgy to be a crackhead?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Yeah it's probably one of the edgiest things you could do

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Damn then i was edgy before it was cool

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Yes

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Funding the cartels and the rich who profit off people getting benifets, hyper edgy

by Anonymous 5 days ago

As a person with quite a few tattoos, that's what we wanted the whole time. Glad to see that society accepts that I'm not going through all this pain for their benefit.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Not getting inked is very rebellious was the main point of that one, I'm pretty sure. OP, you are trailblazer and maverick

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It was never done to be rebellious. We did it because we wanted to, and most of us had to accept that society would be judgmental about it. I'm just happy to see that we managed to normalize tattoos.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Nonono. I'm sorry for not being clear. I am very much covered in tats. I was taking a piss out of OP. He is the one who wants to be rebellious. I just like the process, the look. And one more pleasant side effect is repelling people who get repelled by tats

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It has always just been a form of self expression, people have taken that to different degrees of seriousness. However the societal shift to seeing that as a normal and valid form of expression should have happened long ago imo

by Anonymous 5 days ago

If OP is in the US, they're doing the same thing around 2/3 of people are doing, so IDK how they think it's rebellious.

by Silent-Lemon 5 days ago

I didn't get tattoos to be a rebel or be edgy / have a statement. I have them because I like the art piece on my arm lol.

by RowImpressive 5 days ago

Same here no other reason except the symbol was important to me op is projecting

by Admirable-Double 5 days ago

I have one because I miss my mom

by Jake39 5 days ago

That's exactly how I feel. Its my body and I'm going to keep decorating it the way I want

by Don84 5 days ago

I mean I am badass anyway 🖤🤷💀🤘💪☠️🔥🐉

by Don84 4 days ago

Yeah you are

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I don't mean to be rude, but I'm not looking at your tattoo. They all look similar, nothing really stands out as good art. So do it for your benefit, not mine.

by PaymentCreative6299 4 days ago

So they don't want to appear "badass", but do want to appear "cool", got it

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Lol sure buddy

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Weird thing to get hung up on but okay

by Anonymous 4 days ago

"have other people look at" Pretentious. It's a sign of poor self-esteem to me when someone needs others to validate them for something on their body. I don't care

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Oooh the plot thickens

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Do you wear clothes?

by Okunevahoyt 4 days ago

Makeup, jewelry, hairstyles.....

by Don84 4 days ago

Is this why you think people get tattoos...?

by OneAshamed9267 4 days ago

Besides certain cultures like Native Americans and Samoans - Why did people get tattoos 40 and 50 years ago? Tattoos origins in Western cultures was to be edgy and different.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

It was only seen as edgy or different because they weren't socially accepted. It means the same thing that is used to, it's just more mainstream now. People get tattoos because they like the look on themselves or want to show people something cool.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Soo… if we got tattoos to be edgy and different… why did native and Pacific Islander populations get them…. "Because it's part of the culture" okay but. WHY. At the end of the day they're just signifiers and that specific signal of "I'm tough and edgy" is a very small percentage of the population. Art signifies, in those cultures art signifies. In the west and specifically America, we have a lot of different cultures. Therefore the art signifies different things here because we don't share one culture. This creates the illusion of it only being a signifier of toughness, probably due to media using gang tattoo imagery to signify toughness. Real life isn't the media tho. Most of the people I know with tattoos would cry if they got yelled at by a stranger, none of them are trying to look tough 🤣

by evangeline59 4 days ago

It's part of the reason I wanted them when I was younger 🤷🏻‍♀️ I still love mine no matter what but I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish they were more rare

by No_Experience8753 4 days ago

That's a nice personal anecdote but still doesn't change the history of tattoos

by OneAshamed9267 4 days ago

My point is: speak for yourself. 👏

by No_Experience8753 4 days ago

I simply asked a question

by OneAshamed9267 4 days ago

You're allowed to be wrong lmfao 🤣

by Don84 4 days ago

Yep❤️

by Don84 4 days ago

Are tattoos only purpose to appear edgy or unique?

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I didn't get tattoos to be edgy. I got tattoos because I wanted to have another way to display my style. It's a way for me to self-express. They make me feel happy. So what if they're not unique? I got it for me. No one else. I don't really care what anyone thinks about my tattoos except for me.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

The oversaturation of tattoos makes styles blend together and it takes away from the desired effect

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Ok and? I literally just said it's for me. The desired effect of my tattoos is that they make me happy. Your view of them being oversaturated is your view. And it has nothing to do with why I chose to get tattoos.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Nobody wants to be edgy or unique when they get tattoos. Yeah, I want unique designs but anyone who thinks that I am asking for attention with my tattoos can leave my bubble asap. I get them for me and my most favorite ones are the ones you won't get to see much since they are under clothes.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Your design blends in now because of the abundance of tattoos

by Anonymous 4 days ago

You mean on my body or on bodies collectively? If the second, I am actually glad for that. I wish everybody would wear stuff they like and then nobody would think I try to be edgy because I dye my hair pink, wear a "weird" dress or have tattoos.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Tattoos have been a part of humanity since pre-history. Small relative shifts in recent culture will not change anything with regards to people getting tatted or not.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Honestly if you got tattoos to be edgy you're just cringe lol.

by tremaine09 4 days ago

It's now more rebellious to not get a tattoo. No it's not

by Capable_Field 4 days ago

I kind of agree with OP on this one. Well, I wouldn't say it's 'rebellious' but at least in my social circuit it's more common to get a tattoo than not. Getting a tattoo is more of a norm than it used to be and I think not getting a tattoo tells a lot more about a person than getting a tattoo. Tattoos used to be a statement, now it's just something everyone wants. So it kind of loses its meaning in a way. They can still be cool, but as in many aspects of life, once something gets popular and common enough, it's not seen as prestigous anymore.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

The vast majority of people do not have tattoos, so the idea that *not* getting a tattoo "tells you a lot more about a person" is frankly nonsensical. You just sound like you want to feel better about being too scared or indecisive to get inked. Also the US is currently throwing random people into detention camps, including in foreign countries, over things as simple as having innocent tattoos, so maybe slow down with your whole "I'm a rebel for not having ink" nonsense.

by PalpitationWeird2875 4 days ago

It seems like the vast majority of women under 50 have tattoos here (central Europe). I think I know 1 woman without visible tattoos. Among guys it's about 50/50. Anecdotal, I know, but people without visible tattoos do stand out to me. Same with women without piercings. I don't think it's rebellious necessarily, but it is more memorable imo.

by Nelliemacejkovi 4 days ago

There's still plenty of people non getting tattoos, and they are definitely the less rebellious ones.

by WaferNo9181 4 days ago

Nah man. You don't get it. Trying to be edgy is cringe. But only if you have tattoos. But if you don't, than you're free thinker. But not in a cringe way

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I don't think tattoos have anything to do with how rebellious people are at all, unless they're knowingly doing it to polarize other groups of people. I haven't done it because I have a hard time finding something I want on me permanently and even if I did I'm probably gonna have a hard time trusting any artist to do something that is satisfactory. Getting 10 different unrelated tattoos in nonsensical places is a hyper-fixation, finger and face tattoos are edgy. Everyone has their own reasons and their inspirations have all blended together to the point that having a tattoo is kinda just a normal thing now. If someone got like a swastika or a slur on an obviously visible part of their body, I would think that was rebellious, but also dumb. Getting a heart under your knuckle is not rebellious. Yeah I think I'm with OP on this one haha.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Yes it is. It's more of an expression to not get a tattoo now. Tattoos have become cliche and they make people blend in now. Not getting a tattoo says more than getting one.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Not getting a tattoo says more than getting one. The only thing it says is you didn't want a tattoo

by sanfordboehm 4 days ago

No, it really doesn't. Tattoos aren't particularly rebellious but that doesn't make no tattoos "more rebellious" by contrast. It just doesn't work that way unless tattoos were either mandatory or so expected by a society that not having one was shocking…and it just isn't. It's perfectly normal for someone to have or to not have tattoos and trying to hold no tattoos up on a pedestal is literally the same level of weird cringe as doing the same for having them.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I don't think tattoos make you blend in more. Nobody notices someone doesn't have tattoos until they vocalize "I have no tattoos"

by Gaylordhansen 4 days ago

Not getting a tattoo isn't a statement of rebellion when only 32% of Americans have tattoos. That means more than 2/3rds of America has no tattoos

by Gaylordhansen 4 days ago

(I agree with you but 32% is almost 1/3rd,)

by Stokesjeffry 4 days ago

Most people don't have tattoos. This is nonsense

by Capable_Field 4 days ago

You can't ai art a tattoo into someone I think it's the last real Art form there is with the most talented artists. It's crazy when you go to a tattoo shop. Show them examples of what you want. And they can interpret it and create something unique. Or just describe it and they make magic happen. Not an easy task. Some have seriously incredible raw talent. There is no such thing as a lie when it's a tattoo. In this day and age I find it to be the purist of art.

by colemanschmeler 4 days ago

I've seen people get tattooed with images that were made with ai now

by Stokesjeffry 4 days ago

Maybe as a reference and choice maybe. But I haven't seen a tattoo artist print a tattoo on someone or been unable to take an idea making something more unique.

by colemanschmeler 4 days ago

LMAO people are obsessed with AI, Jesus Christ

by WaferNo9181 4 days ago

They fear what they do not know or experience I'm just making a statement that it is real art I enjoy ai myself. Watching all the furry commission nsfw artist squirm their clientele is lost. I also think a lot of people who do digital art now are lairs and will claim they don't use ai when they did. And tattoos you cannot do that it's harder and done by hand.

by colemanschmeler 4 days ago

I'd argue the energy is very much teenage. I don't even care how old OP is lol. Kinda like Jaden Smith's tweets you know

by Anonymous 4 days ago

This is the second massively popular opinion I've seen here today. The other was Epstein didn't kill himself.

by Full-Resolve4168 4 days ago

Ok I hear you. But something being meaningful or unique to a person themselves doesn't mean they care about how other people think about them or any delusion they have that it makes them edgy. It's pretty normal these days, you're right.

by Full-Resolve4168 4 days ago

If we did it to be "edgy" we would be doing it for others opinions which I assure you most of us are not. You clearly got a chip on your shoulder about what others do with their bodies lol or live with regret on a dumb decision for yourself.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Look at my first sentence lol. Tattoos can be cool. Peoples desired effects though aren't being reached the majority of the time. If it's for style then they are blending in. If it's to be edgy it is over saturated and not getting that effect either.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

40 year olds sitting in the chair at a tattoo parlor: "I want Timmy down the road to think I'm cool." That's not what's happening buddy.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

That's not why most people get a tattoo.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I have 4 tattoos 1 from a favorite book, 1 from a favorite video game, 1 from my own research, and 1 about a childhood pleasure They are all hidden and only for my close ones to see.

by Travonweimann 4 days ago

Generation Alpha are going to be cringing at tattoos, it'll go full circle. "Mrs Henley, my history teacher, has a whole sleeve, so cringe" "ugh and my philosophy tutor, Mr Hemsworth has tattoos all up his neck, uber lame"

by Few-Huckleberry 4 days ago

I think OP has a good point. I'm 59 now, but when I was really young (late 70s/early 80s), tattoos were pretty rare, and it seemed like only tough guys had them. Nowadays ALL the younger people I work with have them. The stigma around then has definitely changed over the years.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

That's exactly my point. I grew up in the 90's and saw the morph from it being an edgy act to one that is so prevalent

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I have noticed that boxers and mma fighters who don't have tattoos now stand out more than those who do.

by Practical_Recipe_900 4 days ago

Exactly

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Ok. I didn't get my tattoos to be rebellious or as a statement. I got them because I like putting art on my body, and enjoy the whole process of getting tattooed

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I don't think the people getting them are getting them because they want to be "badass"—at least certainly not the majority. I have friends with lots of tattoos and they often get things just because they enjoy art, and think it's cool because they have it in their body.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

For me it's a matter of "will I still want this here in 20+ years" and I always come to the conclusion of "I won't want this here in 20ish days". I'll stick with stuff I can easily remove thanks

by Torphytremayne 4 days ago

This is the biggest reason that while being pro tattoo, it took me till 28 to get my first one.

by sabrina67 4 days ago

I was 53. about 4 days after I got my first tattoo I had a dream that I was looking in the mirror and it was gone. It made me very sad. getting more work on my half sleeve in a few weeks.

by mabel90 4 days ago

Hey, it's okay for people to get cringey or cliche tattoos. What matters is that they like it and it makes them happy.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I'm mourning the loss of your visionary outlook /s

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Not really. Most people dont have any tattoos. At most you have Italy and 50% of people with atleast one. In most countries it's way less.

by LakeAccomplished5860 4 days ago

People started getting dumb tattoos. Started with tramp stamps but the dumb mustache finger tattoos killed it.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Started to? Brother have you not seen some of the tattoos that old timers have on themselves?

by Euphoric-Quail-3858 4 days ago

I dont know anyone who got a tattoo to be a bad ass or to make a statement. They wanted a tattoo and got one. Myself included. I liked the look of tattoos. Got an idea and got it done, seven times.

by LakeAccomplished5860 4 days ago

As someone who recently got my first big tattoo I didn't get it to be cool or rebellious, I just wanted cool art. Also idk why ppl are offended by them and want to feel like they "are rebellious for not getting them." Kinda implies jealousy tbh, just get a cool tattoo lmao

by Anonymous 4 days ago

"It's now more rebellious to not get a tattoo." It is, because it's rare. How does anyone with any critical thinking skills even believe this lmao

by sanfordboehm 4 days ago

I was tattooed 50 years ago in the Philippines. You should see this beauties now.

Bro I just like getting drunk

by whitealivia 4 days ago

Lol

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I didn't get mine to be edgy or unique. To be honest, they give me the same sensation as cutting with a significantly lower risk of dying.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I know you're talking about the average joe, but obviously depends on what they are and where/how you got them. Consumer grade tattoos, yea. A couple stars and the virgin Mary during a stay in a Russian prison, still a bit of edge, gonna say.

by ClimateCurious114 4 days ago

Yup, I have my constellations and leaves and pokemon because I like them alot, not cause I'm trying to look badass

by Anonymous 4 days ago

cops have visible tattoos now.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I probably agree, but that is fine. It isn't a rebellious thing or even meant to be. People are free to do it for their own reasons which can be far deeper.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Never found anything I could commit to my skin in all Honesty.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Disagree only with the statement that it's rebellious to "not" get a tattoo. It's not rebellious to abstain from something completely optional that requires money and effort to partake in

by Anonymous 4 days ago

lol no - I encourage all to get them haha I'm just pointing out that there's nothing unique about them anymore Also, I'm very sorry for your loss. I don't mean to insult you. Hope you love that tattoo and it reminds you of awesome moments.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Tattoos aren't supposed to make someone look cool or badass. They're a form of personal expression and art. It's just a plus if it looks cool.

by Aaliyah40 4 days ago

It's now more rebellious to not get a tattoo. No, lol. But still, yeah, tattoos are a lot more accepted now, which is good. People can lean on the aesthetics without worrying about their job or whatever (for most jobs, anyways). That's progress.

by WaferNo9181 4 days ago

"It's more rebellious to not get a tattoo." Lol, ok, buddy. Keep telling yourself that. In fact, go tell that to the innocent people who've been thrown into CECOT because the US government saw they had a tattoo of their mom's name or whatever and decided that meant they were a terrorist. I'd also suggest you maybe do some research into where anti-tattoo stigma actually comes from, historically speaking. It would help prevent you from talking out of your ass and embarrassing yourself.

by PalpitationWeird2875 4 days ago

Yeah man, that's kinda the point

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Maybe thats not why people get tattoos … lol

by Anonymous 4 days ago

There's nothing rebellious about not getting tattoos lmao

by sanfordboehm 4 days ago

I don't regret my tattoos, but I wish so many other people (especially those not alt in any way) didn't have them. I still love them, just wish they were more unique I'm almost always disagreed with on this

by No_Experience8753 4 days ago

You aren't rebellious because you didn't get a tattoo. That's a really stupid sentiment. Tattoos aren't about rebellion or making a statement. Unless you're 70 years old, you're arguing against a view no one has.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

If anyone is getting a tattoo to be cool or edgy, they're doing it for the wrong reasons

by lloyd60 4 days ago

How is it more rebelious to not get a tattoo when not getting one is free and getting them costs money? So you're saying me not wasting my time and money makes me a rebel? 😂

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Did we learn nothing from the Sneetches?

by Anonymous 4 days ago

The spaceships from different sci-fi franchises on my arms were never meant to be edgy.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I've never looked at tattoos in their entirety as something that is edgy. Only what that tattoo may be. I literally get tattoos of things that I like and enjoy, that's it

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Then you were probably born within the past 25 years

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Close guess, it would be closer to 30 than 20.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I've felt that way in my social group for a long time. I only have a small unfinished one, didn't have one for years and years because it seemed so common

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I don't know anyone who gets a tattoo to be "edgy".

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I'd consider it more so trashy but then again I'm a zoomer dude, so...

by Oreillymyrna 3 days ago

I got my first tattoo as a first stab at independence growing up and the last one was done as part of a grieving process after losing my dad. My next one will also be part of the grieving process for recently losing my mom. I could not care less what anyone else thinks about them.

by Uptoneddie 3 days ago

This is an unpopular opinion, not because the opposite is true, rather that most people who have tattoos, myself included, likely got them not to be edgy but rather because they liked the artwork or have a personal meaning to accompany the artwork

by Anonymous 3 days ago

While I was studying in a coffee shop and got up to pee… Two women said my outfit and tattoos made me look "regal, confident and low key sexy." Winning.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Spent 10 years in Austin, and it was super cliched .. you're not "cool" there unless you're doing exactly what everyone else is doing All the dorks with ear gauges disappeared all at once it seems

by Anonymous 3 days ago

When I was a young person the only people that had tattoos and I mean the only people were the elderly and bikers. Our teachers had tattoos because they either were in World War II or Korea or because they were in a concentration camp. Like I said the only other people with tattoos back then were bikers. Tattoos were something that only old people had and I don't doubt that some point in the future tattoos will also be something that only old people have. These things tend to run in Cycles.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Well there is if the tattoos are edgy or unique.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Im glad I never got tatts when it was in trend. But I think they're still really cool. Just cause I'm glad I never got them doesn't mean I didn't really want one before.

by ava88 3 days ago

Ok

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I'd argue most people with tattoos didn't get them to make a statement or to look badass, i certainly didn't so propably not that unpopular of an opinion but who knows i may be wrong.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Why did you get a tattoo?

by Anonymous 3 days ago

i like cats, i wanted a cat on my body in the form of a tattoo so i got a snow leopard and a tiger, simple as that. Though my first was just a drawing made by a friend who died.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Ok?

by Anonymous 3 days ago

The thing I don't fully understand about tattoos is why do we feel the need to put our personality on display so much? Like if I really enjoy The Legend of Zelda franchise, I already know that I really enjoy it. If someone asks me what my favorite video game is, then I can express it openly and wholeheartedly. But do I really need to inject the master sword into my skin so literally everyone knows that I like The Legend of Zelda? I'm just not sure it's healthy to have this desire for people to acknowledge me and my interests, I guess. But I'm not a psychologist, so I can't fully say the implications of this besides conjecture.

by Still_Stretch_7086 3 days ago

I absolutely hate tattoos. I don't like them on men and I think they look trashy on women. I know people will hate on me for this but I just think they're terrible and I don't understand the attraction.
