There used to be an expectation that even movie stars could act. If I had to pin it down, I'd say it was the 1980s. Look at the big box office draws - Arnold, Stallone, Bill Murray (who at that point was a comedian who appeared in movies), Eddie Murphy, etc. There was no longer any real connection between acting ability and box office.

I totally agree. Do the casting directors actually do anything or do they just pick the same big names and hope that brings the biggest return on investment? It's become insulting.
