I think they are saying most people are unable to use critical thinking. People see issues from one side or the other but are unable to understand the other side. I think they are saying people tie their emotions to the side they have chosen over using reason to make their decision.

A person that can view all sides does not necessarily empathize with all sides. I can understand how someone became a serial killer, but that does not mean I empathize with them. They made a choice.

What you are describing is sympathy not empathy. Empathy IS the understanding part. Understanding does not need emotions, compassion or agreement perse. Sympathy is when you respond emotionally to a different perspective.

I would agree that before you reach the age of 25 this is likely fairly close to truth but drops off significantly after that age.
