Plant based milks shouldn't be called milks, amirite?
by Anonymous4 days ago
Coconut milk and almond milk are even older terms
by Reichelhettie4 days ago
Well coconuts have hair and produce milk, pretty mammalian if you ask me
by gerholdseamus4 days ago
Liquid made from ground nuts in water has been called milk in English since the middle ages. Good luck getting folks to change.
by Careful-Bad-64424 days ago
Almond milk has been called that since the medieval period btw. It's not a recent invention. And its in the exact same category as coconut milk and peanut butter.
by Kunzemonserrate4 days ago
Thats udderly ridiculous

I got my foods mixed up and stuck hot butter in my dog hole
by Isabel924 days ago
Bingo
by Anonymous4 days ago
Don't you feel like they should call it something else, since there's no actual dicks in it?
by anahi394 days ago
Are you also upset about hot dogs?
by Anonymous4 days ago
What about cement milk, or body milk, will that still be allowed, your majesty?
by alejandrinkunde4 days ago
Thank you😁
by alejandrinkunde4 days ago
They've been called milks by definition for several centuries. Not sure why you're so butt hurt about it just cause you only learned of them in this one.
by Anonymous4 days ago
Oat drank Almond drank Soylent green
by Anonymous4 days ago
In my country (not sure if in whole EU) manufacturers can't call them " (plant) milk" so they named "(plant) drink" because it's MiSLeAdInG
by breitenbergfran4 days ago
Poor OP, it must be hard being so stupid to be confused by almond milk :(
by Anonymous4 days ago
Well... There was a situation, if i recall correctly, in America, where someone lactose intolerant sued a some company because they bought butter and there was no information it contains milk, so... And they had to take it off from shelves
by breitenbergfran4 days ago
yeah, it's the Americanization of EU consumer laws ... getting down to the level of "well it didn't say otherwise" thats the reason you have all those bizarre warning labels in the US ... because you cannot expect common sense from consumers (this is part of the argumentation as to why almond and soy milk would be misleading)
by Anonymous4 days ago
ehhhh, I am allergic to milk and have bought "butter" that is so artificial it doesn't actually have milk in it. It would piss me off if it didn't have the official allergen warning or ingredient label and turned out to have milk in it, especially because it's a legal requirement.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Yes in Canada I believe they have to call it ___ beverage.
by Anonymous3 days ago
I'm pretty sure they called it almond milk in the middle ages
by Mcculloughlloyd3 days ago
Can we also label milk as a pus mixture while we are at it?

Have fun delivering Vegan food to all the people who made better life choices than you!!
by LeadingWelcome3 days ago
Vegans made a terrible life choice.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Just like to point out that having vegan milk is a choice! It's not about "can't have milk", everyone can drink vegan milk alternatives. Better for you, better for the environment, better for the animals, tastes better. No reason to drink the animal stuff daily.
by Anonymous3 days ago
There is no should or shouldn't when it comes to evolution. There just is.
by Kellieschuppe3 days ago
That is literally how language develops.
by waelchimaia3 days ago
Im not vegan or vegetarian but this push by the dairy and meat industry that people aren't allowed to use clear terms like "oat milk" and have to use stupid terms like "oat drink" annoyed me enough that I started trying all these non dairy non meat alternatives. Some of them are quite good. I quite like the quorn chicken (sorry I mean "pieces") in fajitas and beyond burgers. Oat milk is also quite nice in hot chocolate.

Milk of Magnesia
by Anonymous3 days ago
You must have been so mad when you learned about hot dogs, head cheese or rocky mountain oysters
by Anonymous3 days ago
Seriously, who cares. If you are going for dairy milk, you're not going to accidentally pick up oat milk. Plant based milks are more likely to be confused with other plant based milks than they would be with dairy.

Pesto without basil should not be called pesto…y'all keep going
by Anonymous3 days ago
What if the plant has nipples?
by Laurence213 days ago
Whatcha wanna call it? I'm on board for a name change I drink lots of oat drink and I agree it feels wrong calling it "milk"
Okay you're just being weird! Cracked me up though those are thé worst possible names hahahaha
by Anonymous3 days ago
Pilk
by Samirortiz3 days ago
Ooooo yea I'm in dude! "Yes I'd like a medium coffee with some cold pressed oat please" goddamn that sounds fancy let's make the change happen haha
by Anonymous3 days ago
If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.
by Ignatiusarmstro3 days ago
Language is for understanding, not scientific accuracy. Yes, they are not technically milks, but calling them milks leads to more understanding as to their purpose (to replace milk). Peanut butter isn't really butter. Starfish aren't really fish. Shooting stars aren't really stars. Inaccuracies are not a problem as long as everyone knows what you mean. Because that is the purpose of language. To convey meaning.
by Goodwinhulda3 days ago
Who cares what it's called? They could call it Dave.
by Kathlynmante3 days ago
I like adding Dave to my coffee I find that (he/it?) gives a nice added flavour.
by Own_Bumblebee3 days ago
ok let's call it fluid. Or something. What has changed by doing this?
by Anonymous3 days ago
Here in Norway we have a brand called mylk. It is made from almond and oats.
by cremincalista3 days ago
Let's call it "milk." And the quotes need to always be used.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Let me guess a plant based hot dog shouldnt be called hot dog in your opinion
by Agile-Exchange3 days ago
Imagine calling it nut juice instead
by bergstrombenny3 days ago
It's unpopular opinion not boring opinion
by Anonymous3 days ago
Nut juice just doesn't have the same idk, marketing cache
by TypicalBlood33373 days ago
We can obsess over technicalities all we'd like but in reality language isn't defined by rules in a book, but how average people actually use and apply it.
by Objective-Owl-51583 days ago
How do you milk a plant? They ain't got no titties
by Bethel963 days ago
Coconut milk
by Anonymous3 days ago
Basically anything that was milked from something can be a type of milk. So nuts, or beans are fine.
by marciareinger3 days ago
They play the same culinary role for the most part, why not call them all the same thing
by Anonymous3 days ago
Isn't this just semantics? Does it really matter?
by labadiegerardo3 days ago
I mean... Looking at how one would, (and can,) make almond milk at home, it sure still looks like milking.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Almond milk has been around AND CALLED ALMOND MILK for hundreds of years. Late 14th century, if I remember correctly.
by Medium_Ebb3 days ago
That doesn't necessarily mean it should be. "That's the way things are/have been" is not a valid argument
by Equivalent-Low3 days ago
Milk of the Poppy
by mooreona3 days ago
I feel the same about vegan meat
by Lost-Construction3 days ago
Coconut milk has been there for ages, and coconuts also don't have udders.
by Anonymous3 days ago
You're American, aren't you? In Europe it is already not allowed to use misleading or incorrect names for products, which includes milkless drinks called a milk.
by Dear_Lie3 days ago
I live in the UK and everyone says "oat milk, almond milk, etc" here. Cafes label it as such as well. Not sure why you think this is "an American thing".
by Anonymous3 days ago
Can't milk milk from a stone
by Anonymous3 days ago
Why are you assuming that milk has to be from animals? The term coconut milk has been around for a thousand years lol
by No_Egg30043 days ago
Exactly. Show me the nipples on an almond
by Best-Ice61263 days ago
Not controversial. Such liquids should be called "Squeezings".
by Anonymous3 days ago
It is not juice. A juice is a liquid coming from inside something. The plant based milks are blended with water e.g., oats, almonds, etc… do not have liquid inside.
