-69 It is OK to go into debt in order to take a vacation, amirite?

OP has 2 car payments and is behind on rent.

"Memory dividends" is delusional

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Implying they'll actually pay it back

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I was watching a YouTube video earlier about people getting sued by klarna lol

by Doug82 2 days ago

If you can afford to pay off the debt you can also afford to save up and go on holiday once you can actually afford it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Basically choosing one vacation between bankruptcy every seven years over any sense of adult responsibility.

America sounds cooked lol

Terrible, terrible advice

by AdLonely3917 2 days ago

wrong.... you should never go into debt for a vacation. at all. ever. my girlfriend wanted to visit me, but i insisted that she wait until she can easily afford to do so without compromising her own savings.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The idea that there is only one answer for all situations is the wrong opinion here. Missing once in a lifetime opportunities because of a self imposed rule isn't any more ‘correct' than spending and worrying about paying for it later.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

are you serious? there is only one answer to most things in life, this being one of them. going into debt for a vacation is incredibly stupid and will blow up in your face and id just point and laugh at the persons stupidity. vacations are barely even worth the money in the first place, its not worth going into debt for. ever the very fact that you are attempting to argue at all against my position is entirely foolish. dont even try. oh, and, wrong mindset. you dont "miss" opportunities. you either want it, or not. and if you don't, you didn't miss out on anything, because you never wanted it in the first place. so, not only are you wrong, you have a bad mindset about it, too.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

ive been on vacations before. do you know what the common theme was? stress. stress. loads of stress. you end up stressing so much that the vacation is all but useless. and no, its not just my opinion. its universal. 90% of your vacation is just stress in many different forms and methods. there are very, very, very few things that makes the stress worth it. oh and worst of all? eventually, you will forget that you went on the vacation at all. forget what you saw, what you ate, what you experienced. youd have to have an edetic memory to make it worthwhile, and that comes with its own issues. you have no defense of vacations. at all. its just a question of, is the stress and forgetting things eventually worth the short term boost youd get.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

stress. stress. loads of stress. you end up stressing so much that the vacation is all but useless. and no, its not just my opinion. its universal. But, like, it is just your opinion... I'm so confused lol Like, I hate flying; the process sucks and is stressful and there's barely an airport in the country that will let me have a damn cigarette during my layover, but why in the world would I assume other people have the same experience and reaction to the environment that I do? 90% of your vacation is just stress in many different forms and methods. For you. I go camping, and everything about it is bliss.

Some people value things more than you man. If someone wants to go into debt for a vacation there is no problem with that if they value it as such. Going into debt isn't always stupid. You could argue that going into debt with no way of making the payment would be dumb, especially for a vacation in which I would agree, but if they can make the payment then who cares

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Going into debt isn't always stupid. it is, if you can avoid it by simply waiting

by Anonymous 2 days ago

very impatient....

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This why I said "if they can make the payment."

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Living under the fear of future financial insecurity isn't healthy... put your 6 months of necessity expenses or whatever it is into savings and go live your life.

by Independent_Camel 2 days ago

well, that, and my girlfriend did go on a vacation to take part in their friends wedding. it ended with two people being crippled by too much socializing that it disabled one's sleep and greatly aggravated anothers CFS. is a vacation really worth that?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Also sounds like the wrong people to vacation with. I've had many vacations with friends, family, my partner, and a mix of all of them and every break from normal monotony has been worth it to me. I'm also financially responsible enough to have saved money and planned enough in advance to be fine with it but I would never say vacations are barely worth the money in the first place

by Life-Following-6465 2 days ago

Idk, it's often a bad idea but I go back to "only the Sith deal in absolutes." I graduated in the wrong season for job applications (listings all started in March/April, but I finished my program in December.) Weighed my options but decided to go to Costa Rica for a few weeks to study Spanish since I'd studied in school but never been to somewhere Spanish speaking. It was a resume point and I got a job in an environment with many Spanish speakers. It was a bit of a gamble because I didn't have the cash at the time, having just finished school, but I had been assured by many recent alum that I was entering a reasonable job market. I got a job on schedule and paid off the trip within about three months afterward. For that particular trip, I got so much out of it, I'd stand behind it every time. It is the only time I've gone into debt for a trip (13 years ago now.)

by Western-Ninja 2 days ago

This sounds like OP is trying to find a lot of like minded opinions to convince their SO to take them on a vacation they absolutely cannot afford. This is a horrible idea. Vacations aren't worth stunting financial security for the rest of your life.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No you shouldn't go into debt for a vacation. I say this as someone in the US that has never made good money. I am 43 and currently make 65k, but spent most of my life making a lot less. That being said I think you should absolutely travel and do some amazing things when you're younger! I took a sabbatical at 30 and spent 80% of my savings to backpack around S America for 4 months, and yes Machu Picchu is amazing. My friend and I also took a 79 VW Westphalia hippie van and tried to drive from the US down to the Panama Canal in 2009. We made it through every country, but the VW died in Honduras. I also have done a ton of shorter trips, and think traveling and experiencing other cultures is one of the best things in life. It's just the smart thing financially to be frugal or get an extra part time job for a period of time to save for a trip. Realize that outside of maybe a business loan or a mortgage on a house, most debt is terrible and try to avoid it at all costs. It's how they shackle you into the system

by Alaynabergstrom 2 days ago

This sounds like me in my early 20s. 15yrs later I barely remember much from the trips...remember how painful it was getting cleared of debt though.

by Spiritual_Breath 2 days ago

If you can pay it off in X months, why not just save up for X months beforehand?

by Able_Evening 2 days ago

Because that's logical.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Unpopular because advice like this can ruin your life and make sure you never retire.

by Present_Cupcake4396 2 days ago

If you can afford payments on the debt for the vacation, you can afford to save up for it in the first place. If you can't afford to save for a vacation, you sure as hell can't afford to pay back a debt for one.

by adolphus78 2 days ago

This is unpopular because it's incredibly stupid. Like 5th percentile dumb.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I can't think of anywhere on earth worth potentially ruining your life. There is no life changing vacation that you won't regret not being able to pay off bills for. 50 weeks of stability is worth more than any 2 weeks you've ever spent on vacation.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Or you can save up and travel now. Taking on debt will cause more stress and make you less prepared if an emergency arises.

by Delicious_Squash1832 2 days ago

The debt may get paid off eventually. People generally will tell you it's not OK to go into debt for things like vacations because if you're at that point financially, where you need to take on debt to travel, you are ill prepared for every unexpected expense (since you seemingly had no savings to begin with) so it's more of a 'this is really risky' type of thing. You have no idea what will happen tomorrow.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

there is a balance to be had. 60 is not as old and decrepit as you think, especially if you take care of yourself.

Brad pitt is 61

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Ah yes. The MEMORIES. No one can take back the memories for a week or two of traveling, maybe longer. Memories are always what people mention as the only thing they care about, then when they're struggling for YEARS with debt that affects them every single day, they go "THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED!" I would much rather save up and have enough money on hand for a trip than go into debt for one. Never in my life have I gone into debt for a vacation, and I've been able to go on multiple every year.

by Imanicummerata 2 days ago

I went on a trip 51 years ago to Yellowstone and the Black Hills. I remember a few things about it but not much. I asked my older sisters recently what they remembered about it, but they didn't remember anymore than I did. I'm am more or less repeating that trip in September. So ya no memory dividends.

by Classic-Effect1199 2 days ago

A little bit of debt that you can pay off? Sure. Crippling debt forcing you to play catch-up for a decade? Maybe not. I'm all for exploring the world when young... I'm trying to that now, rather than doing the "responsible" thing. However, I work and save, then holiday within my means, because I know life goes on when I return.

by PepperSerious 2 days ago

It's not wise. Okay is in the eye of the beholder. On occasion, one must ask oneself " how long will I be dead?"

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Only time debt is worth it is if you use the money to buy something that can generate money. Like a house or stock shares

by Internal-Owl3065 2 days ago

House, maybe. But stock shares? Seriously? You'll need a rate of return that outpaces the interest rate. Statistically speaking, you're unlikely to.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No

by Few_Formal 2 days ago

If you can afford to pay for your debt plus interest, you can afford to put away money for vacation. If you're going into debt for vacation you're just bad at planning ahead.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Unpopular opinion because it's wrong. if you do this, what is your plan to pay it off? Are you expecting a large increase in pay?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

OP you know if you just pay for the vacation you will have more money in the future for more vacations...

by Roselynbradtke 2 days ago

I will never let myself live paycheck to paycheck again just because I foolishly took on more debt.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I was paid largely through incentive/bonus. We always chose to spend some on the past, some on the present and some on the future. Debt, life, savings.

by Human-Meeting 2 days ago

It depends on your priorities. If you ever want to be financially stable, you're guaranteeing that you never will be by taking on unnecessary debt. Yes you can never guarantee success, but you absolutely can guarantee failure.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Not significant debt but a couple hundred...ok

by Muted-Criticism5266 1 day ago

I put $3k on a card for a trip and have no regrets about it at all. It was a zero interest intro card and I paid it off before the 0% interest expired. You can do it and not drown in interest. Life is too short to not experience the things you want

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, it's really not the end of the world to use your CC for vacation. I think people are being super uptight. I put some of my expenses from my trip earlier this year on my CC and I will be paying it off. Big deal. I have super low interest anyway. Not to mention all the awesome memories I have from that trip! Those last a lifetime, and in my opinion, they make life matter. If you are getting yourself into significant debt to go on a vacation, eh, maybe not the best idea, but it's your life.

by dustinbrown 1 day ago

As OP said, part of the reasoning here is that maybe you won't be paying it down because of whatever happens. Further, I do understand what you're saying. Interest on a $5000 balance is much worse than a $500 balance. But then, what is the ultimate point of having a $5000 limit if you actively avoid reaching it? A good trip makes as much sense as buying a boat to use during the Summer.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I'm not going to buy a Lamborghini tomorrow because I might be dead in a year. That's not logical.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No, those are not the same. If you don't pay your balance off every month, you're a fool.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I wouldn't advise buying a speedboat either. But if you have a speedboat and you're not using it to speed, what's the point?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Analogies not your strong point I guess

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I agree with this actually. Youll never get the time back. Travel
