+91 Hospitals shouldn't be allowed to advertise, amirite?

Pharma, doctors, nor hospitals should be allowed to advertise. Taxpayers cover about 70% of every dollar spent on healthcare. ( yeah private insurance is getting a free ride on the taxpayers ). they are using taxpayer money to pay for that advertising.

I think Hospitals should be able to advertise. There's nothing wrong about saying "my facility has a higher standard of care". What's really screwed up is prescription drug manufacturers advertising. Telling customers to push their doctors to give them specific medications is evil. Offering doctors kickbacks for prescribing specific medications is eviler.

"We need to get to the nearest hospital!" "No, drive a few miles for [NAME ] Memorial Hospital, they had better commercials. I'd like to give them the business."

People definitely do this. And most care that brings in money is not emergency care anyway because the majority of EDs function as loss leaders anyway in which case advertising is definitely a factor.

I'd be more worried about the predatory pharmaceutical and insurance companies that have the politicians in their pockets

Of all the things that drive up the cost of healthcare in America, advertising is the one you're bitching about? That billboard on the highway is not the reason your saline drip cost you $5,000.

One time I saw a billboard that said a nearby hospital had the fastest ER around. That was a bit of a shocker that something like that would be on a billboard.

Not if you saw the way people ER hop. We get a lot of people in our small town ER from 30m to 1hr plus away because we aren't as busy.

I mean, people should know where they need to go in case of an emergency. But also most hospitals are barely scraping buy financially.
