+65 School uniforms are completely pointless and a huge waste of money, amirite?

I'm in the US, my kids highschool had a school uniform requirement. Khaki pants and a polo that matched the school colors. It made shopping for school clothes so much easier. Also saved money as I didn't have to buy multiple outfits for the school year like I did before the uniform requirement came into play.

In a lot of places in the US, uniforms are intended to keep clothing costs down by avoiding kids demanding the latest fashion for school.

School uniforms are enacted so that those who can't afford "nice" clothes don't feel disadvantaged. Makes it so everyone at that school has 1 less thing to worry about or be anxious about. You can usually buy a full set for less than $50. Not really expensive.

Looking back, it was definitely a nice piece of structure in elementary and middle school. I dunno how I'd have handled it in high school though, unless it was just like, pants and a tucked in polo, not a specific set and color.

My friend from the UK said that all the posh rich families have the worst ragged uniforms because even though they are wealthy, they are known to be incredibly frugal. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Confirm. The moneyed families don't spend. They like old raggedy stuff.

Uniforms are good for parents and children alike. The uniformity is especially good for poor kids who might not be able to afford the latest fashions and would get singled out for not having the right clobber. It's good for parents because you don't have to wash different outfits everyday and monitor what they're wearing. It's also good for fostering a collective identity.

Idk what type of schools you went to but I had a uniform, it was not formal and it didn't cost nearly as much as you're talking about. Was it ugly? Yes. But I wasn't going to put any effort at 6AM anyway and it does make stuff more practical for parents and students

i think most school uniforms are pretty basic. i dont know about fancy private schools and uk schools that require suits and stuff, but it's usually the cheapest kind of outfit you can get. it serves three main purposes IMO: remove the whole clothing facet of school drama makes it easier to single-out threats when everyone but them has a uniform help save money so kinds arent getting their parents to buy them expensive clothing

Ugh, I had to buy few akubras during my school years. Those things were painfully expensive.

Nah it is way easier to just buy uniforms, also depending on the school it help avoid kids being mean to the ones who can't have the latest fashion, also £100-200 seems like waaaay to much for uniforms, I think that if you can afford a school that requires such pricy uniforms there isn't much to complain.

My son's school has a uniform. There are a few options of different athletic pants and shorts, and a handful of different t-shirts. At his age this isn't a big deal but I imagine it reduces the amount of bullying and the difficulty of enforcing a dress code at older ages.

It's wild people are saying buying dedicated school clothes is somehow cheaper. No one forces you to buy 30 sets of clothes for your kids if they don't have a uniform.

Uniforms are stupid. They stifle kids independence and individuality.

Uniforms keep clothing costs down and significantly reduce dress code issues.
