The ending of "The Prestige" sucks and severely worsens the film, amirite?

Even I can agree with this.

This almost reads like you don't realize that Borden and his twin are two different people.

You understand exactly why Borden is so conflicted through the movie, right?

I don't think he does

Curious as to your interpretation, why do you think he is?

Do you understand that that's his twin? Like his natural brother, they lived the double life, everything for the illusion. It's not a duplicate or clone or whatever like Angiers is, that's the whole point. The sacrifice it takes to actually pull it off.

I understand that, I just felt like his character arc was better before the reveal when you still think he is only one person. He gets overconfident, thinks he's better than Angier, chalking him up to a talentless showman, wants his family to love him unconditionally despite his lack of commitment and affair with Johansen's character. He loses all he had in his ceaseless want for everything and to be the best. The fact that Angier's framing of Borden relies on Borden seeking the secret to Angier's tesla trick is perfect; he cannot accept Angier has the better trick. Angier relied on Borden willingly sneaking backstage to see the secret, the fact he isn't forced to and does it out of his own need to be the best is amazing.

I agree, the plot became bloated with reveals upon reveals.

The twist with Borden wasn't just for shock value; it ties directly into the film's themes of sacrifice and obsession. His dual life explains the emotional contradictions, and it's hinted at all along. As for Angier, I don't think he's less culpable, he literally kills a version of himself every night. That's way beyond what Borden does. The sci-fi twist with Tesla works because it's The Prestige...the final impossible trick. It pushes the story from clever to unforgettable.

The worst twist you can have in a movie about magicians is that magic is actually real, and you can just clone yourself. I'm guessing he wrote himself into a corner and there was no sensible way to explain the first half of the movie using 'normal' magic'.
