That's sweet! Thank you for sharing. Teenagers are usually very empathetic in my experience, especially because they're going through a lot of overwhelming emotions too, even more so when they feel like they have to form an unit to protect each other against the same enemy (in this case, the manager).

I understand that, and while I also do dislike the person I used to be when I was a teenager, I also think I would've made less mistakes and done less things that I regret at the time if people were more patient with me back then. And I think that applies to a lot of people.

I don't think you realize just how patient people already are with teenagers. You should as a teacher, though. I'm a middle school teacher. We are patient to an absolute fault with some of these kids. I'm sorry, but the "respect them and they respect you" thing just isn't realistic. I respect every single one of my students, treat them as such, build the relationships as they say, and I've still been cussed out, swung on, and, literally, threatened with death. I wish it worked like that, but it just simply doesn't.

Everyone was a teenager at some point. I honestly feel like if anything, we as a society failed them, and have no one else to blame but ourselves for their shortcomings. Their development has been stunted because of our actions, and covid could not have been healthy for their generation. With that being said, they still have so much to learn. That doesn't mean we should disregard them. Rather, I think we should facilitate their growth rather than denying it.

This. So many people - including parents - act surprised when teenagers don't know how to behave, but aren't willing to teach them well.

The way I see it, most people have a reason for sucking. And while that doesn't justify bad behavior, it does explain it. And teenagers, especially, are going through so many overwhelming, intense emotions that I can't blame them for lashing out sometimes. It happens, people have a limit of how much they can handle before they blow up. Be kind to yourself, you're going through what's likely the hardest time of your life right now and it's okay to "suck" sometimes. You deserve patience too.

They could care less as long as someone'll bleed

Not sure whether this is an unpopular opinion, but it shouldn't be. Geez, they're just people.

That's lovely! I'm sure they're very thankful they have someone as wonderful as you as their parent. My mother is also an incredible person and I appreciate her every day. The amount of teenagers that go through the same thing you did with your parents is overwhelming, in all my classes of 25-30 teenagers I'd say only maybe one or two teens in each of them has good, understanding parents that are aware that they're going through a lot right now and they need a lot of patience. I'm very grateful for the people like you. <3

Thank you. My son lives in another city now, 2 hours away by car. He calls me almost every day to say hi. The three of us still jump in the car every year and do a week-long road trip. They're amazing. And their friends are too. At least, that's how I see them. I made a decision not to be one of those cranky curmudgeons that scowls, shakes their head and says "kids these days". It's naive and lazy.

"well back in my times…" is not even an argument, prove me wrong

Sometimes it is. If people are saying teenagers are worse than they used to be, pointing out that they were as bad back then is a valid argument.

Man I wish people shat on me when I was a teenager. I'd be a better person now.

Just wait till you see that genZ stare

It's when a genZ gives you absolutely no emotion in a conversation like they are nothing but a zombie

Thank you! And yeah, that definitely happens lol! I feel like it usually just happens when you're talking to them about something they're absolutely not interested in, though, and they don't want to be rude about it so they just turn their brains off for a little bit. As a teacher, it happens often... Trying to always find an entertaining way to explain things is exhausting, but it's okay.

I swear this was not a thing before 3 days ago. It's all I've been hearing about now!

It's a real thing! Most of the kids just are dead inside!

Ha! Sounds about right. I'm 19 and just finished my first year of college; I swear SO many people just... exist. They have their headphones on 24/7, always looking down, their voice never used... But there's also so many lively, vibrant people that I love to be around! Unfortunately it does seem relatively 50/50 on who is what.
