In my opinion, perhaps the show doesn't appeal to your empathy because you didn't have narcissistic family members and weren't put upon to maintain peace while finding yourself. It's the frustration of unhelpful allies that I empathize with the most. You can have the best of intentions, but simply set up for failure, or inevitable disappointment. Yes they are annoying. But they ring true to reality for a lot of people dealing with similar familial pressures.
