+50 Lynyrd Skynyrd died in 1977 anything after that is just a cover band, amirite?

Not an unpopular opinion. I know a lot of Skynyrd fans, and I don't know a single one who considers the Johnny van Zant version anything but a cover band.

Does this apply to Led Zepplin as well or any other band that loses a member and replaced them? Metallica?

Well, to be fair – it was the lead singer.

So the entire rest of the band means nothing their sound is only their lead singer?

I was not agreeing with the OP, I was just trying to clarify their point. Having said that, bands that replaced their lead singer, but still have original members are more than just a cover band. For example, Queen with Adam Lambert is not a cover band, it's just a different version of the group. Same with journey.

I was just seeking further clarification. OPs logic and your clarification says that the lead singer is more important to the band and losing one means anything else going forward is not the same band.

The lead singer is the most important member of almost every band.

In this case, yeah. Skynyrd cycled through guitarists, but van Zant was the constant. His voice defines the band, and he wrote the songs.
