On Road Trips, Driving Through The Night Is Better & Safer, amirite?
by Similar_District2 days ago
It's definitely not better because you can barely see, so any nice views etc will be wasted, and that's a big part of road tripping, and sometimes it's the entire point.

"And if you look to your right..that's right, more darkness!!"
by Anonymous2 days ago
Lol! Its a fair point. On the other hand when you get to areas with no light polution, the stars are insane!

True, one time I saw Britney Spears while driving at night
by Anonymous2 days ago
I'll admit, that one took me a second 😅

Getting through major cities at the crack of dawn is the way to do it IMO. Most people aren't on the road yet so you don't have bad traffic, and you are mostly driving throughout the day.

Majority of the middle of this country is nothing worth seeing. Ex: Nebraska is 8 hours of boring nothing.

As someone with crazy astigmatism, no its not.
by Careless_Fill2 days ago
Definitely not for me. I get so tired driving at night.

I am a fan of driving through the night as well (or leaving at like midnight) mainly because i usually have to go through NYC and hitting the city (and jersey) at that time means no traffic. Last time we did a long road trip we also had a toddler and dog which meant they slept a majority of the first leg which was huge. I will say deer are def a hazard in rural areas but with less people on the road it is easier to avoid a collision with them.

My friend, who almost died when they hit a moose while driving in the night would disagree with you.
by Anonymous2 days ago
As someone who has hit a deer 3 different times, always in the dark, I would also disagree.

Ya you do have to be more careful of deer and moose. But it's a tradeoff. I still think other drivers are a bigger hazard.
by Similar_District2 days ago
Then id rather just apply that same care and caution during the day to other drivers

This could be solved if we improve our moose elimination program.

I'm partly with you on this. For me, road-tripping usually means taking a drive during your free time to enjoy the ride itself, not just getting from A to B. What you're describing feels more like a long commute, but I get the appeal. I'm in Europe and often do an 8-hour drive between Germany and Poland to visit family. Whenever I can, I leave around 8 p.m., arrive at 4 a.m., take a nap, then wake up at 9 or 10. Even if it doesn't technically give me an "extra" day, it still feels better. I get to spend more time at home or with family before heading off again. About 3 hours of my route is on rural roads, not highways, so it's way faster and way more peaceful at night. No traffic, no stress. I just put on some good music or a podcast, crack open an energy drink when I feel myself getting tired, and cruise. Night drives like that can be genuinely relaxing.

wrong. night time means less visibility.
by Anonymous2 days ago
if you have functioning lights on your car it is much more visible than during the day
by Anonymous2 days ago
disagree. with daylight, and on a clear day, you can see for miles ahead of you, as opposed to maybe 10 meters.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Wait. Do you keep your high beams when cars are passing in the side of the highway?
by amina262 days ago
Oho, then your viewpoint makes sense to me, at least as long as you can stay alert and awake. Hitting traffic late afternoon when you really start feeling road worn has always been the most dangerous on my trips.
by amina262 days ago
You're so right, that's why everyone knows there are less accidents that happen on the road at night…wait
by skilescitlalli2 days ago
I'm guessing you don't have moose
by Anonymous2 days ago
Its between vancouver and calgary canada, so the moose and deer population is extremely high. Have made the trip over 30 times with no issues though.
by Similar_District2 days ago
U def haven't driven anywhere with a ton of deer. Have fun with the drunk drivers and people nodding off
by Anonymous2 days ago
That's just asking to hit a kangaroo.
by Neither_Sandwich_7662 days ago
This also reduces the number of people who camp in the left lane (in the US) which drives me nuts.
by Anonymous2 days ago
If you are alone - no issues. Don't do this if you have kids or elderly parents in the vehicle with you.
by Agreeable-Pie-92982 days ago
It's not necessarily safer. Between drunk drivers and people fighting sleep, there's definitely people that are not driving safely overnight.

Depends where & when. Road conditions, weather and local climate. Rural areas? Gravel roads? Rainy season? Snow? Ice? Mountains? Winter? Spring?...
by Accurate-Bottle2 days ago
You must not have any wildlife to deal with.

Great unpopular opinion, bravo 🤙🏽
