Hockey fighting is engrained in the culture but for good reason. There's hitting, and the guys are traveling at an insane speed while doing it. This creates the possibility for recklessness to cause serious injury. There are also situations where getting into dirty corners with sticks and elbows flying... it creates a lot of opportunity for dirty play to go missed. The only reason fighting is a thing, is because its a rule or honor that polices the game further than the refs can. If you want to stick your knee out or hit a guy in a vulnerable situation... you need to fight the other teams enforcer. If you are constantly digging the butt end of your stick into people, or trying to sneak elbows into noses... beleive it or not, you're fighting. It keeps guys honest instead of relying on the refs to try and make calls on every little thing. I dont feel like this applies so much to soccer, or many other sports for that matter. Dirty players are held accountable by the idea that you will get punched in the face if you decide to act up.

What use does fighting have in football?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I always laugh my ass off when someone punches a facemask.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I've never seen that. It's usually a shoving match with facemasks getting grabbed.

Especially when they are doing everything they can to reduce injuries in the NFL. Tackling someone too hard is literally a penalty now.

What would be the most interesting sport to see two competitors have a fight? Not what would produce the best fight, but rather the best arena, so to speak. I would say anything in water.

Polo. Like, with horses.

Let's just joust!

In the NHL they're wearing ice skates and have pads and helmets so even when they throw their gloves down, I think the damage they can do on short notice is much less (obviously assuming they don't go after each other with their sticks etc). I think it would be a bigger problem in something like the NBA where there is no protection and one punch can break bones, like with Rudy Tomjanovich.

Google "Rudy Tomjanovich almost dies" if you want to know why allowing fighting is a bad idea

NBA and Men's soccer needs it. Tired of seeing grown men act like they got hit by a truck to get a PK or FT. Let an enforcer throw hands and show em what a real one feels like

NBA and Soccer are full of primadonna's moreso than other sports

They talked about this before, the idea of only allowing the "combatants" to avoid full bench brawls. The idea is shot down quickly because players are expensive.

by Mammoth_Garlic 2 days ago

I came here to watch the beautiful game between the most talented players on the world, not a fight. Let boxing & MMA deal with grown men who want to fight.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

What's the point? In every game can devolve into a punch up then you lose integrity and structure. The fans aren't paying for non combat trained people to throw arm punches at each other.

Brother yes we are. The whole AHL exists and those games get super rowdy lol

by Ok_Lead 2 days ago

It also wastes time and will cause pointless injuries.

by Confident-Slip 2 days ago

Yeah, nothing says- I spent my whole life building my skills- like resorting to trying to injure your opponents so you can win. Some people don't like seeing others hit each other.

Fighting in sports is stupid, hockey has only gotten better since fights have decreased. I want to watch the game, not some goon, who isn't even good at the sport he plays, try to fight someone. Go watch UFC if you want to see fights.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Go watch tennis, nerd

by Ok_Lead 2 days ago

Goons yes, but 2 skilled players dropping the gloves is an an absolute treat to watch when the emotions boil over
