+40 "I don't owe you anything" is a terrible social mindset that only spirals into decline. amirite?

Not an unpopular opinion anywhere outside of the US. The American "me and mine" mindset is unbelievably selfish, that's why American culture is so individualistic

by Anonymous 2 days ago

They are individualistic until they talk about nationalism and loving America. It makes no sense. Is patriotism just an excuse to be ignorant?

Yes. Yes it is

This shouldn't be unpopular, "you don't owe anyone anything" is remarkably stupid and selfish. And before anyone says "BUT", yes obviously this doesn't apply to doing things for terrible people, but people hear this once then apply it to everyone in their life and it sucks.

I think it's sad this is an unpopular opinion.

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion, but a sad state of affairs. Linked closely with calling people entitled for wanting to be treated with basic human decency. Ahhh what a time to be alive.

I agree. It's been taken too far

i prefer "nobody owes me/you anything"

I try to treat everyone I meet with respect and kindness but what annoys me the most are the people who act like they deserve it. I'll hold the door open for you if you're right behind me but I've had people who have come up to me about not holding the door when they're nowhere near the door and people whose immediate reaction to something I've done is to be rude and disrespectful. That's when I feel like "I don't owe you anything" is completely justified.

Sure. A person who goes out of their way to disrespect others isn't owed respect.

I think you owe people a bare minimum of respect

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I'd say to true. After disrespect no way. To be frank no one in the world owes anyone anything. If they help you, repay them equally. If they're selfish on being paid back equally with interest, you owe them nothing. So bare minimum i agree with, they cant reciprocate the bare minimum, again, you owe them nothing. I would even add you can protect your peace by not distancing yourself.

by Majestic-Pirate 2 days ago

Not always. It's hardly ever an issue, until someone is demanding respect when they deserve none.

by wilfredowalker 2 days ago

I think always at first, until proven otherwise

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Right but ultimately nobody owes anyone anything, even if we create material situations where it does make sense that someone owes another person something. Bc ultimately we all die alone, and none of it actually matters. Do what you like to do! Be the disrespectful rube. Reap the whirlwind.

by wilfredowalker 2 days ago

I wouldn't argue that someone demanding more than what should be common respect is being fair. That's beyond what I'm talking about - I'm talking about people who refuse even the basic common respect.

Maybe there is a place for them. Rocking boats. Stirring pots.

Individualism > collectivism

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Hard disagree, but I'd like to know why you think that will result in a better world for everyone.

by PrestigiousJello 2 days ago

Individualism triumph in fascism and capitalism meant to isolate you so you derive your meaning of existence through consumption and labor. OP is right, these kinds of statements only erode the social nature of humans and are a sign of a culture that is degenerating a culture that has become purely transactional devoid of any soul.

This mentality is partly why American has so many homeless.

Seems to be an odd take for some one participating in a conversation on a social media site over this funny thing that connects us all internationally called the Internet.
