+56 Spoiler Alerts should not apply to media 10+ years old. amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Spoiler warnings take so little effort, that I think it's absurd people are so against them. People are discovering old stories all the time, and it's nice to not be spoiled on them. It's just being courteous to those around you. I really don't see why a story being old matters.

See, my hot take is that I don't mind a spoiler because it still doesn't tell the story. If I know the results but still have no idea how we got there, I'm still interested. If a main character dies and I get that spoiled, I still want to see what happened. The only time a spoiled ending ruins something for me is when that something doesn't have very strong writing to begin with and relies on some ending twist to engage the reader.

That's cool, but other people do mind. It's just about being empathetic to others.

I know, hence why it's my hot take. Lol. I'm all about the journey, not the destination.

While I don't agree, a big thing you also have to consider is genre. A tv show where no 2 episodes are connected to each other (like The Office)? That's fine, there really isn't anything to spoil there. A video game or tv show that's heavily dependent on mysteries or solving stuff yourself to get enjoyment? No, these types of things should still have spoilers enforced so people getting into them late don't have the entire experience ruined.

Hamlet dies.

Disagree, there may be certain thinks like the twist in Empire Strikes Back that can be considered part of pop culture, but stuff like the twists Se7en, Shutter Island and Fight Club shouldn't be assumed to be common knowledge.

not everyone was born when the show came out and might only now be an appropriate age to watch it. should they have their viewing experience marred just because they were born late?

by One-Bet-5217 2 days ago

I wholeheartedly disagree. If a movie came out before you were born, what are you supposed to do? Have innate knowledge of it from birth?

by Unlucky-Wasabi6691 2 days ago

Not everyone is as old as you.

by ZestycloseFly 2 days ago

I agree, and I think most people outside social media tend to agree too. I look at it as a year or two. After that I'm not going to avoid spoilers unless someone tells me they're in the middle of the show/movie we're discussing.

Not at all unpopular. There's a time limit to spoiler alerts and its well below 10 years into the future. That being said, you should make an effort to not give away spoilers until you determine if your audience has seen the media or not.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nonsense. People engage with things at different times.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Is that a thing or unpopular opinion?

by Christiansenjas 2 days ago

I'm surprised this is an unpopular opinion because whenever I see someone spoil an old show or movie online one of the first replies is always "it's X years old!"

by Anonymous 2 days ago

There are a lot of movies I wasn't able to watch when living at home with my parents because my mom has a lot of PTSD triggers. I, in my early 30s, am still getting caught up on things.

by devin09 2 days ago

have you ever played myst? no? then should i spoil it to you since it's over 20 years old?

by Prudent-Analysis 2 days ago

My bad for not consuming all media that has released before 2015 I guess…

by Leuschkejadyn 2 days ago

I was watching a movie that was 10 years old and my friend spoiled it for me when I said I was watching it because they assumed I was re-watching it

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I disagree The only thing i would say does not need a spoiler warning is things based om real historical events.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It reminds me of the guy I know that's like "music that's few years old shouldn't be played anymore", its like it has expiration date to him which is so bizzare to me. Same with spoilers basically.

by SituationHoliday 2 days ago

It takes 2 seconds of effort.

Big difference between some hardcore fan board and the general public. No excuse for ruining it for other people. Most references to popular media is typically. not spoilers either its usually specific character stuff
