+54 Bananas would be far less commercially viable if their ripening wasn't so predictable and tightly linked to their color. amirite?

There's at least a bit of a trick you need to know with the hard skin and large hard seed. It's not like they're apples. Although probably less of a trick than with pomegranates.

True, but most fruits don't signal ripeness as reliably for humans. Apples, avocados, and even tomatoes can look ripe but still be hard or flavorless. Bananas are unusual in how well their color maps to texture and sweetness and I have to think has contributed to their success in the retail setting.

Well you also need to understand this is really like the 3rd or 4th thing society has considered a banana and that most bananas you buy in a retail setting are probably heavily bred to be sold in retail and aren't really what a "wild" banana would be

Okay, so they'd be less commercially viable if they were different? Which was OP's point?

Bananas are unusual in how well their color maps to texture and sweetness This is precisely why we bred this particular type of banana. Other banana relatives aren't as predictable.

100% Bananas are awesome. I think they are making a bid to control our evolution as did grains

Even 80% bananas are still pretty good.

Ita just sad you can only one sort of Bananas these days in most countrys due to the past Banana-wars and the fact the once famous one has gone extinct due to an illness which killed allmost all the plants because they were genetically just clones of each other and had no chance to develop immunity. In some shops you can buy cooking-bananas but i would love to try red or the nice blue ones which are said to taste like vanilla ice cream.

you can check my ripeness by touch.

by schowaltergrant 2 days ago

That gets to my point though - if you had to check every banana by touch the shelves would be covered in brown mushy spots and wouldn't sell nearly as well.
