It must be hard to tell if a good actor is lying.

You ever think about how many actors are just living different lives all the time and forgetting who they really are? What if they lie without knowing?

They probably will be better. However, when something is at stake rather than being a fictional character, it can be harder to hold an act

Your own personality is a character, whether you're in the acting profession or not.

Not really. When I went to theater school I was told all the time I was really good, got compliments, awards at festivals, invitations for work, all that. I am, however, a TERRIBLE liar, and for that reason I choose to always tell the truth regardless of how bad it is. I know I'd get caught.

It's harder to tell if an actor is telling the truth. I win.

As a lifelong professional actor I hate this take. Im acting if i'm on camera or on stage. I dont go around life performing. Would it be possible for me to pretend to have an accent or work up some potentially real emotion in my day to day...sure. but most actors dont do that and wouldnt want to. Theres a lot more to my job than fooling people. When this comes up (which it does a lot) I usually default to saying being a good actor is about being good at telling the truth. Like expressing what youre REALLY feeling and not what youre supposed to feel. And I often tell people im a good actor because Im a bad liar, but Im not so sure Im that bad of a liar. I am really bad at bluffing at poker though

Acting and lying are completely different. Lying is when you want to deceive someone. Acting is playing a role, not to deceive but to make a movie. If actors want to lie, they will not be able to use their acting skills for that, the brain knows the difference

When someone with a living mother says "my mother just died" with tears in their eyes, are they lying or acting? Does the presence of a film canera make a difference?

I think he means to be good at lying there's also a logical component. A good actor can generate an immediate emotional response, but that is not to say they can weave a fictional storyline that makes enough sense to be believable over time.
