Giving your child a bizarre or ultra-unique name is just selfish. amirite?

What was that weird name Musk gave to his kid? Ugh. Peak cringe.

Didn't he name his son X? 🤦

Which one? Half of them are pretty rough in the nomenclature department.
by Anonymous2 days ago
OP, what's your name?

Gary

Not remotely unpopular
by Cautious-Rooster-5221 day ago
It's not. Due to survivorship bias and whatnot.

The worst ones are the nerds who do it. Because all they are doing is trying to prove to other nerds what a big nerd they are.

Reminds me of that guy on Youtube, Paulo in Tokyo, who named his son Wolverine lol

I say this as a trans person, but I've noticed there's a lot of similarity between trans names, stripper names and kids names from teenage parents. People shouldn't name things when they're 18.
by Some-Package18131 day ago
My cousin and his tweaker girlfriend named their kid Danger. She lost custody of him pretty quickly and the folks that adopted him changed his name.
by Anonymous1 day ago
It is a rite of passage for a trans person to pick a dumb name. It is also not unusual for them to keep said dumb name (love all my friends, but I will take the mick with their consent).

I mean the Etymology of all names shows you how corny we've been since ancient times and that we've been doing it since then Example: Stephanie originates from the greek word "Stephanos" meaning "Crown" or "Wreath"....... Can you imagine knowing some girl named Wreath? LOL

This is not an unpopular opinion.

Tragedeigh and Ratleen are inclined to agree.

I hated having the same name as everyone growing up on the 80s. I hated having to use First name Last initial in my artwork in class. I love unique names, I guess we are all different in our preferences.
by Efficient_Voice37371 day ago
Try telling that to the Millennial Midwest.

I mean how bizarre are we talking? I teach kindergarten and I have some really unique names come through my class. Believe it or not, other people are capable of learning how to pronounce "different" names, and kids don't bat an eye if the adults around them are chill about it. I don't love completely made up names, but that's just personal preference.
by Anonymous1 day ago
But as the person with a different name it gets so annoying. I don't want it most of the time. I pronounce my name as clear as possible but have to spell it out to people. Gets old real quick
by dibbertmarlene1 day ago
Yeah this is just straight up true, its linked with narcissism.

pretty sure this opinion isnt even unpopular

I am curious what your opinion is of cultural names? Gaelic names, Indian names, Slavic names, Chinese names, etc they can sound unique and bizarre but in another place (or community) be perfectly normal
by Easy-Job1 day ago
I think normal people would agree lol

I've noticed lately a lot of young parents give names that are meant for pets to their children
by New-Parking-11831 day ago
Not unpopular.

As a person with a really weird, uncommon first name, I kind of agree with this. However, honestly I really just think we should get a free legal name change once in our lifetime, much like Xbox used to (or still might) do it. Personally I've always wanted to change my name, but I can't afford it, so I just use my middle name or an abbreviated version of my name.
by Anonymous1 day ago
I had a weird name that sounds male when I'm female. It lead to a lot of bullying, misgendering, clerical errors, maltreatment, mockery and just downright pity. In turn it's made me respect my parents a lot less because they're clearly very uneducated and can't think long term. It has severely impacted my level of confidence in them as people.

There is no "ultra-unique" of anything ever. Something is either "unique" or it is not. It's like being "dead". Either you are or you are not. But otherwise, I agree.
by Anonymous1 day ago
There definitely is. Unique would just be an uncommon name. Ultra unique would be something borderline cringe. Like elons child name.
by Orval621 day ago
Not true. There's unique names like Oliver and then there's made up names that aren't actual names. There is a difference

I have a coworker literally named Michael Myer. I never addressed it, and it feels like a big elephant in the room. I wonder what their parents were thinking...

Having kids is already selfish. You created life, but no one needs it. So you can call it what ever you want.
