America wastes 30-40% of its food supply annually, that sounds like an insane number until you remember your average Joe is tossing his perfectly fine Chinese takeout into the trash because it got to room temperature and he's watched one too many Chubbyemu videos on YouTube Honestly I have no idea what you're talking about, your average Joe is not tossing their food away because it got to room temperature or leaving their perishable food out for hours. The 30-40% of food being wasted is not from people leaving their dinner out for hours then chucking it in the garbage. The majority of food waste happens during the production and sale stage. And the majority of food waste at the household stage is bread and other grain products. People leaving their bread out at room temperature all the time. They are not throwing the bread they keep in their pantry away because it is room temperature. This is a uniquely American thing, but there is an almost neurotic adherence to the "two hour" rule here in the United States I doubt the majority of Americans even know what the two hour rule is, let alone adhere to it neurotically

Tons of Americans eat pizza left out overnight in the box, so they definitely don't.

Pizza is the only thing I'll eat after it sat out over night idk why it's just the way my family is

Wait...what? This is an unpopular opinion??? WHAT?

by antonettawilder 2 days ago

never heard of the "2 hour rule" but it entirely depends on how long it's been left out and what the food is

It's a literal FDA guideline

We did a chili cook off for a work potluck once. It was fun!

I just throw it out. It's like a few dollars vs if it did actually make me sick and I'd be miserable

As Asians we grew up eating stew that's left out on the stove and reheated every time lol

I agree with you. Especially if it's something that's very acidic or salty like say a pizza it's going to take longer for a meaningful amount of bacteria to grow on it. And then when you nuke in the microwave for a minute that's good to go. I know my friends and I have had weekend long gaming drinking fests where pizza will sit out on the counter from a Friday night to Sunday afternoon and no one has ever gotten sick.

The problem is bacteria poop which can't be killed by heat

Everyone decides for themselves, right?

It's almost like there's different kinds of foods that spoil at different rates. Raw chicken on a warm day left out for hours, probably not, that same chicken deep fried and left on the counter, lil hot sauce and I'm going in.

Pretty sure I ate 48hour old pizza in college pretty often….

I people do that at work all the time and it was very different to see. Depending on the food I am extremely picky about food safety.

I regularly leave food out overnight and eat it for breakfast in the morning and I never ever get sick seriously as long as the food smells and looks alright it's fine to eat and I live by that rule

I don't recommend doing that during the summer....
