+74 Karaoke is annoying and horrible, amirite?

by Holiday_Brief_46 20 hours ago

One day someone will introduce you to the idea of doing things for fun and you'll be a lot more tolerable.

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

Why are you going to places where there's karaoke?

by Anonymous 19 hours ago

Have you tried avoiding places that have Karaoke? That may solve your problem.

by mayeradolph 19 hours ago

A lot of my friends like going out to those places so instead of denying them I'll go, I just try to avoid the karaoke if possible.

by Holiday_Brief_46 19 hours ago

"Hey, guys. I'm going to sit this one out, but next time you're going out to [the movies/eat out/paintball/insert thing you like], call me."

by Anonymous 19 hours ago

You sound like zero fun, I'm shocked you even get invited.

by lera73 19 hours ago

Ok; then decline the invite is all they're saying (coming from someone who also doesn't want to do/go to karaoke)

by One_Public_1058 19 hours ago

I'm bad at a lot of things. I still do them because I like them. They're for me, not for you. Even the things I do in public.

by Anonymous 19 hours ago

Fortunately it's really easy to avoid karaoke lol

by SwingOk 19 hours ago

Unless you live in the Philippines lol. They're literally everywhere here

by Still_Permission9487 18 hours ago

I don't think this is a particularly unpopular opinion. If it was, karaoke would be far more common.

The spirit of singles groups

by Anonymous 18 hours ago

(My bad) Karaoke as a single man has led to more dates than any app or singles group. But I never go outside my vocal register or sing songs I don't know. One time I sang the Black Keys' Lonely Boy and copied the "dance moves" from the music video (of the security guard from the studio) and got more attention when I wanted, when I was just vibing to the song.

by SignificantWeight326 18 hours ago

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. Single people connect over it.

by Anonymous 17 hours ago

Most places that do karaoke have a karaoke night, so go on any other night and you're fine.

by Anonymous 17 hours ago

You've never heard me, 10 beers deep, do home sweet home by Motley Crue. I promise you it would change your perspective.

by EmotionalImpress2114 17 hours ago

I feel like you're misunderstanding the point of karaoke. Karaoke isn't meant to take the place of songs. Yeah, of course random people singing aren't the next Celine Dion. It's not meant to be good, it's meant to be fun. And like others have said, karaoke is very easy to avoid.

by Impressive-Put 17 hours ago

Agree no fun at all even if you're hammered. And the following day you feel like death warmed over.

by Anonymous 17 hours ago

So then just avoid places with karaoke? This seems like a problem with fairly easy solution, does it not?

by Anonymous 17 hours ago

Tbh, you don't there because you want to hear the song. You go there to be social. Once I sang Prince's "Kiss" during karaoke, and a drunk-ass milf gave me $5

skill issue

by Anonymous 16 hours ago

I'm envisioning OP paying $150 on Ticketmaster for SRO tickets to dive bar karaoke and then being shocked when the main act is terrible. OP- you don't go to karaoke for the quality of the performance, you go for the entertainment of watching people make an ass of themselves while taking a turn doing the same.

by Familiar-Leather 16 hours ago

Wtf? You're telling me the karaoke Doorman doesn't charge everybody 140 plus the $12 processing fee

by One_Public_1058 15 hours ago

This isn't unpopular it's just anti fun

by thurman64 15 hours ago

Full agreement - the absolute worst form of "party entertainment" ever

by Anonymous 15 hours ago

plays basketball with friends "Why are you playing basketball? there's no point. You'll never be in the NBA and no one wants to watch you miss 90% of your shots" "Go somewhere else where I'm not playing then!"

by Double-Radio-9977 15 hours ago

It's a social event to get drunk and have fun with friends. The rooms are private, you can reminisce about the past, and there's usually 1 or 2 good singers in a friend group. It definitely became more prominent in Asia, and not the West for the reasons you list above. You don't have to go. Maybe this is at a bar setting rather a karaoke specific table.

by Anonymous 14 hours ago

Karaoke is not necessarily private. It's usually bars I get invited to and if there's karaoke I don't like it but I'll go there to be with friends.

by Holiday_Brief_46 14 hours ago

I think you're misunderstanding open mic karaoke night instead of karaoke specific bars (which offer private rooms).

by Anonymous 14 hours ago

If you remove the stick first, you might actually have fun

by Reichertzola 14 hours ago

Isn't this supposed to be an unpopular opinion? This just sounds like common sense to me.

by Anonymous 13 hours ago

Local man hates to see people have fun

by Anonymous 13 hours ago

The secret is to get drunk, much more fun that way

by Anonymous 13 hours ago

You sound kinda miserable tbh

by Anonymous 13 hours ago

Then simply don't go into s place on their karaoke night... Pretty elementary

by Jazmyneoconnell 13 hours ago

I mean you're not wrong,

by Anonymous 12 hours ago

I gotta agree. Karaoke sucksssss. There are few things worse than hearing drunks butcher songs, or hearing those sing-along songs like "Sweet Caroline," "Uptown Girl," etc and everyone expects you to happily join in. F that!

by ConstructionSoft7110 12 hours ago

There is something called having fun and being silly with other people. You may not have experienced it before but it exists. Or just don't go to places with karaoke?

by Watsicaelza 12 hours ago

I agree wholeheartedly! I avoid karaoke like the plague

by Anonymous 12 hours ago

I think the answer involves " alcohol."

by Santa48 12 hours ago

Then my advice is don't go to a bar on karaoke night. The rest of us think it's a lot of fun. I actually like hearing my friends' fresh takes on songs that are played too much on the radio.

by Anonymous 11 hours ago

I think this has kind of been said to death and I hope you're hearing it. But I'll chime in as well. Karaoke isn't about listening to the songs. Sure, sometimes, some amazing singer comes up and it's really good. But the majority of the time, it's just somebody who wants to get up and sing. It's not necessarily going to be some amazing performance. It sounds like you end up in these situations because your friends like to go. I truly feel for you if it's not something you enjoy and I understand what it's like to go out with friends doing an activity that you don't necessarily get. Back to my point though, try to see it as someone having a great time - the person on stage. Forget about the song. They are up there because they want to be, not necessarily because they think they can sing the song super well or anything like that. It's just fun. I would highly recommend trying to sing yourself; you might find that you understand more if you've done it. If these friends like it so much, I wouldn't be surprised if they would go up with you. Anyway, good luck!

Try it in Japan with some cool people and get back to us.

by Anonymous 11 hours ago

I'm literally at karaoke right now. I've made a lot of friends coming here and even started a band with a couple of them.

by Runolfsdottirry 11 hours ago

Note to self, never invite op to karaoke.

by Cody37 11 hours ago

Agreed. Someone had to say it.
