+34 I don't care if service or retail staff are "rude".... amirite?

by Ricotorphy 10 hours ago

Yeah, their "hot take" seems predicated on misunderstanding what rude means.

I don't expect people to fawn all over me, but I do expect basic courtesy. If I say hello, it would irritate me if my greeting wasn't returned. And that's happened plenty of times.

by cbaumbach 9 hours ago

Sounds like a personal problem, nobody owes you a hello or anything of that nature

In terms of interacting with a service worker, it's just professionalism. I went to a Wendy's recently to pick up an order and when I walked up to the counter three of the employees turned and just stared at me like I had 3 heads. It was weird af lol basic employee courtesy is greeting customers and you don't even need to be that enthusiastic about it. One shouldn't let customers feel unwelcome in their place of business

If you don't want to manage even "hello" to acknowledge the human in front of you, get a job that doesn't require any direct human contact.

by Major-Cow 9 hours ago

Then don't work in customer service…it's literally the job, to make sure the customer has a decent experience and will return to spend more money

by awaelchi 8 hours ago

I just don't get why minimum wage workers are the ones expected to get people through the day?

by Langjasper 8 hours ago

I think their point is it doesn't matter what your salary is, be decent to people who aren't rude to you. And sometimes you pull up to order and someone is giving you attitude from the jump.

by Anonymous 8 hours ago

Because like it or not… It's part of the job description.

by Anonymous 8 hours ago

Because they are getting paid to make the customers comfortable and want to come back to spend more money. That's a big part of the job.

by awaelchi 8 hours ago

Well when you pay the bare minimum don't be surprised when you get the bare minimum

by Langjasper 7 hours ago

Being rude isn't illegal Imagine not being able to pump yourself up and need to rely on some random waiter… Why wouldn't I just talk to my friend or family?

by Hayesjose 7 hours ago

Imagine choosing a job in customer service and being a dick to people. I can understand not coddling crappy customers. I think it's necessary as a society to discourage customers taking advantage of people, but everyone needs to make an effort to be polite.

by Anonymous 7 hours ago

I'd just kick them out if they get unruly. Let em back in a week later. They're good for a month and have to kick em out again Done it countless times. You made no point. Just reinforcing points that were already made.

by Hayesjose 7 hours ago

I don't want to be polite to people who aren't polite to me either. You and I just don't have the personalities for super customer-facing jobs. If you aren't able to deal with rudeness without being personally offended, you'll have to find another line of work.

by Anonymous 6 hours ago

I never got offended. When Gary comes in being a creep to my servers I have a problem and it's personal.

by Hayesjose 6 hours ago

Stfu nobody owes you anything on this planet and someone who doesn't want to be polite while they are at their work has every right to do their job and nothing else

by Anonymous 6 hours ago

…are you okay?

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

Yeah buddy… That's why they specified a customer service job. We're being polite. The customer is part of the job. Take a deep breath

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

Then that business should expect sales to go down. I'm not going to return to a place that gives horrible customer service. Especially like a restaurant or high end store.

by awaelchi 5 hours ago

I don't need to be coddled. I don't need excessive politeness. But I won't be spending my money there if the employees are outright rude. It's one of the great things about going to Chick-fil-A. The employees there speak complete sentences.

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

Totally agree, especially if it is just a shop where I am buying something and leaving. As long as the product is satisfactory I don't care about the service

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

I agree with you. Professional courtesy exists in all jobs. Some people get absolutely livid if they aren't treated like a king or a queen.

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

I don't care in the slightest either. I just care about efficiency.

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

Every service and retail employee agrees with you, this can't be an unpopular opinion.

by Macejkovicsydne 3 hours ago

Not all of us are AHs, so no, we don't. If you can't manage even a basic greeting you need another job.

by Major-Cow 3 hours ago

Agreed. In Jamaican culture, our service workers are rarely nice but they will always give you what you want. I'm not really there for small talk so I have no problem with this type of service

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

I don't need to be coddled, but I also don't want your undeserved attitude.

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

You don't care if theyre rude.... as long as theyre not being a dick.... So which is it? For me atleast these two are the same thing. And rest assured waiters & waitresses who agree with OP, I will be equally "rude" with my tip.... or lack thereof

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

My lady and I disagree on this. Although I do enjoy a smile and polite tone and all that when being served, I genuinely don't mind someone who gets right to the point. Not rude, but some may take it as that. She takes it as rude and does not like it. I take it as they're busy / they're having a bad day and they're still working in service. Or maybe they are just like that and customer facing roles just aren't for them and they're figuring that out.
