Maybe to someone who is expecting aliens to be like ET, it wont be exciting. But finding life on another planet... is one of the biggest questions in the world.

Indeed. The dark forest theory has entered the chat.

My guess is that if life is discovered on other planets it will be carbon based just like earth.

It was just single celled organisms here on earth for most of earth history. So it's a fair guess when we do find life somewhere else, it'll be just single celled organisms there too. Which would be scientifically amazing. But also a letdown, after all the science fiction has gotten our hopes up for so much more.

Our existence is a tiny tick of time in the grand scale. Many civilizations could have come and gone. Plus any evidence of said civilizations could still be on the way here.

Many good points here, I would also disagree with the premise of we would've found them by now. We haven't sent out signals that far out into the void. Compared to even our own galaxy, the bubble of radio transmissions we've sent out is miniscule. Here's a link for reference.

The data says 1 so far. 1 place with life in the visible universe. It's also the only place where life is even a concept. Even if there were some microbial fragment found it will be so far away that you couldn't get there fast enough to still be alive by the time you got there. It is fruitless and a waste of everyone's time to even consider extra terrestrial possibilities.
