Sure, as long as you don't view the rules as some sacred thing you're not allowed to break. Some of the best art was made by breaking these rules. You mentioned that a song in 4/4 is better than throwing sounds at the wall, but entire genres have been created by breaking these rules and just throwing sounds at the wall.
