+42 The fact that the "chicken sandwich" consisting of just a chicken patty with mayo and pickle became such a cultural touchstone made me feel like I entered the Twilight Zone, amirite?

by Anonymous 7 hours ago

There was even a huge boost from people who wanted someone to stick it to chick fil a that it became more culturally relevant

by Homenickabner 7 hours ago

Because a lot of fast food chicken sandwiches, maybe even all of them honestly, weren't actual pieces of chicken. I mean they were made of chicken obviously but not a piece of chicken breast or whatever. Also idk where OP is from but a piece of fried chicken with bread and a pickle is a pretty good little meal, it's not an unusual combination, someone just made it into a sandwich.

It's not even a whole pickle lol

Toast sandwiches were popular and apparently delicious As in untoasted bread, toasted bread, untoasted bread

by Regular-Dance 6 hours ago

I have never heard of this, but my mind has been blown

by ryder81 6 hours ago

We'll be back to those soon enough, assuming mayo is actually affordable

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

But wait, Trump told me California laws are why egg prices are so high!

I literally put butter on a slice of bread, fold it in half, and eat it. It's one of my favorite things when I'm craving something salty.

If you grew up poor, they're still a thing.

My unpopular opinion is that it is child abuse if you give birth to kids to whom you cannot afford to give proper nutrition. Having said that I understand that EBT/food stamps are quite generous.

WERE quite generous

EBT/food stamps are quite generous. Not for much longer

by Exotic-Macaron 3 hours ago

Seems reasonable. There was a family with 5 or 6 kids who got $3k per month which they spent on junk. Meanwhile, other families aren't having more than 1 or 2 kids because they cannot afford it. Another unpopular opinion is that while it's fine if poorer people have some children, if they have more kids than the upper or middle class while being dependent upon transfer payments, then we have a serious long term problem. I want them to be able to have income assistance, but if the recipients grow faster in population than the people who are net contributors to that program, then we jeopardize future payments for the next generation. That is extremely bad if you are poorer. If one believes that it would be something like "eugenics" or "genocide" for poorer people to have 1 or 2 kids, then you would have to conclude the same for middle and upper class people.

The maximum SNAP benefit for a family of 5 is $1155. Less than $300 a week. It really isn't outrageously generous.

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

It's really interesting that people on SNAP benefits consume a larger quantity of cigarettes and soda than people not on them.

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

You can't buy cigarettes with SNAP benefits. The odd times I notice someone using the SNAP card for my state they're buying the same food as anyone else - fruit and veg, a little meat, dairy and bread, rice & beans. Recipients who live in food deserts are the ones who really suffer because they are limited to fewer options of more expensive foods. That said I don't care what poor people buy with their SNAP benefits.

I'm gonna interject and say that many museums will give free entry with a SNAP card, even an old empty one

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

I love that!

You wonder where these "studies" come from? Would a rich person respond to a survey truthfully? Am sure your the guy that says drug test for SNAP. BUT why don't we drug test politicians or police. You know the people with power?

by Kali21 1 hour ago

The issue is that poorer people generally have worse sex education, less access to contraceptives, and less access to abortion. I bet if you fixed those issues you would have a lot less poor families with 3+ children. But many politicians, especially those on the right, want to get rid of welfare and abortion without fixing the underlying issues of poor sex education and lack of access to contraceptives.

The fertility/birth rate in the US is 1.6. (replacement rate is 2,1). It's lower in states like KY and WY and MS and LA with lots of poor white and Black people.

Real folks know the peanut butter and mayo sandwich is king

by UnlikelyHamster 52 minutes ago

Peanut butter and banana, with mayo, is a LOT better than it sounds.

by Yjacobson 35 minutes ago

I'm going to have to try that, for science
