Restricting the internet anonymity would actually make us safer. amirite?

People vastly overestimate the danger of foreign states and actors and greatly underestimate the danger of their own government and enemies within Benjamin Franklin said it best "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"

Take a look at the UK right now. And the TEA app. It doesn't matter how safe you think your internet is, if a group decides they no longer like you, YOU aren't safe. 13 thousand women's IDs and locations got leaked and put onto a map for any men with bad intentions to find. And that's for women. What happens if it is... black people and a supremacist group finds it? What if the government decides to become anti-LGBTQ+ and suddenly has the location of every single person in the community? You're polish... what happens if a country decides to be anti-jew and starts to round them all up? How are you going to hide when your every single move is being tracked by the government and internet?

Using the argument of a totalitarian government wanting to hold captive anybody who opposes it is not that strong, when you realise they can simply pop up to random places and grab people from the streets, like ICE in the US. If you believe anonymity is your safety armour against the government, then I regret to inform you that nothing will protect you from a regime such as the third reich or putin's russia.

True, the governments decide what's up and what's not. But in that line of reasoning people often forget that foreign governments are not the innocent observers, but they can be actual predators building up a movement of doubt towards our own govts, which is super beneficial to their influence.

yes, the american government may or may not be doing just that. especially in alberta.

Keep you safe from what? Words? You trust a government to decide what ur allowed to see and not see? What you're allowed to think and not think? Boy do I have a bridge to sell you.

Frankly I think my own government dishes out just as much propaganda as any other country.
by Low-Safe1 day ago
But is the propaganda of your country full of claims that your neighbours belong to your country?
