It was a really weird situation because if Vince just wanted the belt off of Bret he could've turned it into a 3-way match with the Undertaker and had Undertaker get the title. Bret just didn't want to put over Shawn Michaels and Vince didn't want to change the booking for him. I feel like it was douchebaggery all around. I think one thing that actually contributed to it was Madusa throwing the WWF Women's Title in the trash when she showed up on Nitro.

Yes but Shawn was the guy, it's hard to rebook a match that has been hyped up for weeks and months. This match was THE match people wanted to see, it was where the money was. Vince couldn't just changed it no matter how much he probably wanted to.

Who was in charge though? Something I've always been curious about is, what authority did Bret have to say no? He was leaving, it was completely unprofessional to refuse.
