+38 Mushrooms are gross and shouldn't be in food, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Not to mention a majority of mushroom species are toxic/poisonous. That's not true... 3% of known mushroom types are poisonous

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, OP was hoping you wouldn't fact check that.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

75% of OPs don't even think about checking their facts.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They were told there wouldn't be any fact checking. How can you expect have a debate if people are making sure what you say is correct?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Granted, if your opponent isn't well-researched during a formal debate then you really could just make up facts. You may even get a seat in the White House using that tactic.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's just like their (unpopular) opinions, man

by SmartMinimum8804 1 day ago

Abe Lincoln told me most of the facts people say on the internet are wrong. Like 90%

by Anonymous 1 day ago

100% of me

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Someone randomly eating plants outside would encounter a toxic one long before someone randomly eating mushrooms.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

100% of mushrooms are edible. Some only once.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Even aside from that, it's not like there aren't any poisonous plants or animals around lmao

by Adventurous_Deal9068 1 day ago

"Do not eat animals cause the majority are poisonous! " - Op probably

by Samantha37 1 day ago

OP discovers preferences

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Well, what about when they want pizza? It's not like pizza places just let you choose what goes on your pie. My local place only serves pineapple and anchovy so I haven't had pizza in years.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

What??? The Pinchovapple pizza is an American staple!

by Ok-Kaleidoscope5873 1 day ago

It's just frustrating with food preferences especially because most of them aren't even remotely unpopular. I would say 25% of the people I know enjoy mushrooms. 50% don't really care either way. 25% dislike mushrooms. A really unpopular opinion would be something like "Boiling chicken in sour milk and ketchup is hands down the best way to cook chicken" or something. "I don't like [food]" is basic bitch stuff.

by Hot-Market 1 day ago

Right? Also I hate pickles. So when I order a sandwich I ask for it without. Just like OP is free to order pizza without mushrooms…

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Agree, it's really annoying.

by Minimum-Gap-6093 1 day ago

This definitely is not unpopular opinion worthy

by schmidtmuhammad 1 day ago

Mushrooms are faster to grow than every other food, and you can slice their mycelium into pieces and multiply it indefinitely, and the return on water and biomass you put into growing them is much higher than any animal. And you can grow them in a small space. It's like a miracle food.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Not a mushroom enjoyed but these points are exactly why mushrooms are based Maybe one day I'll like em

by Ok_Future 1 day ago

I love mushrooms but tbf anything would taste good that way lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Once I actually got to try different kinds of mushrooms, I figured out they weren't all bad. I've found that a lot of varieties that are popular in Asia (such as beech, King Oyster, Enoki, Oyster, etc.) have better texture and flavor than a lot of what I can get at grocery stores here in the US.

by Frosty-Hyena 1 day ago

That is a fair point. The ones state side do seem to be less user friendly. Too easy to make them slimy or otherwise unappealing. Ugh, the horror of biting into one of those limp, soggy slices. It gives me nightmares.

by Frosty-Hyena 1 day ago

I didn't become much of a fan of mushrooms until I learned how to saute them with some butter. It also didn't really click until I started trying mushrooms other than the standard white/brown Button mushrooms that you see in every grocery store. Common button mushrooms might be some of the worst edible mushrooms in my opinion. It sucks that they're so many people's general understanding of mushrooms. Oyster and Shiitaki mushrooms are good and easy to get your hands on. Now I love mushrooms of all sorts. Just had to break that barrier by having good mushrooms.

by Pfannerstillnic 1 day ago

just about anything is more sustainable as a food source than animals

by Medium_Oil6354 1 day ago

honestly the return on biomass for any animal is terrible. here's something baffling: it takes 16 pounds of grain to produce ONE pound of cow meat.

by Enough-Step 1 day ago

That's why animals were not traditionally raised on human food, but on pastures full of the plants we can't eat, growing naturally on non-arable land

by Kiehnsydnee 1 day ago

And that's why filets are so delicious. Takes a lot of time and material to produce something great.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

"I don't like mushrooms". There, fixed it for you

by zanderernser 1 day ago

It's ironic how you mentioned Pizza while the Pizza Flour being indirectly made out of fungus. Lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Ohhhh just wait until they find out that cheese on their pizza is made out of bacteria. Or that some cheeses contain literal mold and people pay so much money for a good smelly moldy bleu. Or that the yogurt in their fridge is also made out of bacteria.

We shouldn't potatoes because any nutrition found in them can be found in other places. We shouldn't eat spinach because any nutrition found in them can be found in other places. We shouldn't eat . . . You can not like mushrooms, but let the rest of us enjoy a good thing.

by Venatremblay 1 day ago

Not to mention those are plants 🤮 who wants to eat plants.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I love mushrooms and add them to a few foods. Including on my pizza.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This isn't an unpopular opinion, it's like the most common food avoided by childish eaters and people who go to restaurants and order chicken tenders.

by marksjayne 1 day ago

I eat almost everything. Except mushrooms. They taste awful.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Damn, roasted (another great way to enjoy mushrooms).

by suzanne58 1 day ago

Attitudes like this are why humans aren't welcome in the Shire. Hobbits are all about mushrooms.

by Ujakubowski 1 day ago

"who wants to eat a fungus?" Wait until you realize just how present fermented foods have been throughout the history of human diets. Cheese, breads, chocolates, alcohols, and teas are often produced through fermentation of fungal yeasts. Being a picky eater is only a reflection of you. Mushrooms aren't to blame for your own lacking palette, and your dismissal of them only highlights your incredibly limited food knowledge. This is why food opinions are so often nonsense. Everyone has experienced food, so they think their opinions are justified. The reality is that most people have very, very limited food knowledge. TL;DR - You don't know what you're talking about, and your food pickiness is your own failing.

by Malindapurdy 1 day ago

Theyre FUNGUS 😱😱😱😱 Grow up. Sounds like a five year old wrote this

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I hope OP doesn't know about cheese

by Framicleora 23 hours ago

Discovering how delicious mushrooms can be is one of the major changes in my life since turning 30. I hated them my whole life, it felt like eating a sponge. Now they're one of my favorite things and I crave them all the time. You'll come around if you get some good ones

by dibbertlenora 23 hours ago

I usually hate this type of reasoning but mushrooms are one of the few exceptions. Most of the mushrooms you can buy at grocery stores here in the US are meh. However, pop into your local Asian market and most of the mushrooms they sell are phenomenal!

by Frosty-Hyena 23 hours ago

Which mushrooms? There's literally thousands of edible mushrooms with a wide variety of flavors and textures. This lack of specificity is akin to claiming vegetables are gross, and is not so much an unpopular opinion as it is an uninformed one.

by misael49 23 hours ago

Do you eat cheese? Thats mold! Drink alcohol? Thats fermented liquids! Fungus isn't a bad thing just because its fungus. Some animals are poisonous too, same with plants, doesn't mean that all animals or plants are bad off because of that. Mushrooms are delicious and easy to grow yourself, if you dont like them thats your problem but they add alot to any dish.

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

Like, mushrooms are a fungus. Who willingly wants to eat a fungus? OP you do know that pizza dough and bread have fungus in them, don't you?

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

plain wrong. mushrooms are like sponges, they absorb flavor and add complexity and umami flavors. some can be bland, but it's just how they're cooked and what they're seasoned with.

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

As a kid I hated mushrooms, then my uncle took myself and my sister out to dinner at a nice Italian restaurant when he flew into town that day. He ordered some kind of grilled portobello mushrooms which I'm not even sure what kind of sauce was on them and made me try them. They tasted like an amazing steak and my mind was forever changed.

by No_Winter 22 hours ago

I dislike mushrooms, but this is wrong. I do think mushrooms are more of an acquired taste though.

by jarensanford 22 hours ago

Have to agree. 20 years of my life I despised mushrooms with a passion. Then I slowly started eating them on pizza and now I enjoy them. I still don't like onions though.

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

I've tried to like mushrooms so hard, but I just can't. They're so good for you and that's why I always try, but they make me gag a little. 😭

by adele62 22 hours ago

i don't care much for mushrooms either and i notice that they often get lumped in the vegetable category even though they're not. like as a vegetarian, i'll often look for the "veggie" option/version of menu items and i kind of roll my eyes when i see it's mushrooms. like a vegetable pizza or quesadilla, i will happily take the mushrooms off so i don't make a big deal, but they're not a vegetable.

by SafeFabulous1462 21 hours ago

I 100% agree on this one, but only because I personally don't like the taste of mushrooms. "It's a fungus!" is what I often yell at my husband when he eats mushrooms and "it's moldy!" when he eats blue cheese 😅 But really I'm jealous because he seems to really like those things and I wish I did too

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

Get this stupid flavour out of my food. I only eat chicken tenders and fries - OP probably

by Far-Opportunity 21 hours ago

Counterpoint: The texture is fantastic, the flavor is earthy and complex. Yes it's a fungus, why does that matter? I love mushrooms and nothing you wrote about them is an argument for why they shouldn't be in food—just that you're not open-minded about food.

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

by Anonymous 18 hours ago

It's ok to be completely wrong OP.

by Anonymous 18 hours ago

I used to hate all mushrooms for the reasons you stated. Then I learned the majority of mushrooms sold in grocery stores and used in foods are called button mushrooms. I hate their texture and flavor. I tried oyster mushrooms and enoki mushrooms and I absolutely love them. Oyster mushrooms are my absolute favorite. The texture is different when cooking it and it just taste better

by Reichelzoie 18 hours ago

I can't stand mushrooms, in particular the smell just turns my stomach. But you are wrong...they look delicious, and I am jealous of others who like them, they seem like something I should love.

by Anonymous 18 hours ago

I agree with one exception. Mushroom soup at Japanese restaurants. Yup! Any other Mushroom food is nasty.

by Anonymous 17 hours ago

Canadian pizza? Canadian here. Is this a thing you Americans do? Make a pizza with mushrooms and call it a "Canadian?" The only Canadian pizza is the actual pizza invented here, which is Ham and Pineapple. You wanna make fun of us for that, enjoy. But you're not sidling us with the idea of mushrooms on a pizza. That's not a "Canadian" pizza.

by Anonymous 17 hours ago

"Who willingly wants to eat a fungus?!" Do you have any idea how cheese is made? If you're squeamish about mushrooms, you probably shouldn't look into cheese. Also, I'm getting tired of "unpopular opinions" that are really just food preferences. "I don't like mushrooms!", "I don't like coffee!", "I don't like beer!", "I don't like onions!". I mean, disliking a popular dish or ingredient is technically an unpopular opinion, but it's the most boring type of unpopular opinion imaginable.

by Useful-Pride 16 hours ago

You're a 12 year old with the palate of a toddler, got it.

by Anonymous 16 hours ago

I have always hated them. No flavor and the texture is slimy and feels like chewing slugs I hate them. I avoid them at all costs and is one of the few things I won't eat.

by Downtown-Crab 16 hours ago

THANK YOU I hate mushrooms. just the consistency of soft slimy yet somehow crunchy fake meat

by VegetableThat 13 hours ago

I agree but that's only because I absolutely hate mushrooms. I know plenty of people that like mushrooms. The only shrooms I like are the ones of the magic variety

by Anonymous 13 hours ago

I 100% agree. I hate all mushrooms unless they ate the magic kind but i also hate those but i will eat them every now and again

by alia15 13 hours ago

Everyone seems to have foods that they like and dislike. Simply leave them out when you cook and always ask for no mushrooms when you eat out. I happen to like mushrooms.

by Callie88 13 hours ago

In my mind, fungi are "cleaner" to eat than animals, plants, and the other kingdoms for food. They appear pretty uniform, structurally.

by Anonymous 12 hours ago

I hate mushrooms too but it's just cause the taste and texture make me gag for some reason. I would agree with the "who willingly eats a fungus," except a lot of cheese is literally mold, and most people love that💀

by Anonymous 12 hours ago

Actually, this take is quite popular with children. I hate mushrooms too.

by Anonymous 11 hours ago

You're a monster, mushrooms are delicious

by Miserable_Cut 11 hours ago

People also eat cheese with fungus in it, like blue cheese and gorgonzola. And people use a fungus to treat infections when they take Penicillin. Not all fungi are bad or dangerous.

Wrong, most mushrooms are perfectly safe to eat. Another ill informed opinion, not unpopular.

by Jastnorene 6 hours ago

There's a lot of different mushrooms and they can taste quite different. Portabellas are what you usually see in the grocery store or on pizza. I've had morels and chanterelles and they're quite different and I think much better. Chicken of the woods and oysters are two other popular ones for people who forage

by Anonymous 6 hours ago

Not unpopular. Mushrooms are a very hated food. Delicious though, and a staple in many dishes. Do you eat any sort of cheese, like blue cheese or brie? Those have mold. You're willingly eating mold.

by Boring-Blacksmith383 5 hours ago

Mushrooms are amazing! They can even get you high AF…. This is a dumb opinion not just an unpopular one…

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

My only problem is when it's not specified on a menu - especially at asian restaurants, a description will say "with vegetables" and then there are mushrooms in that bitch. And I'm sitting there pissed thinking, "It's fungus! Fungus is not a vegetable!"

Dudes complaining about eating fungus on pizza but not about the aged cow milk that is cheese

by conroyernestine 4 hours ago

Quick question- have you tried different ways of preparing mushrooms or have you just had the canned ones? Anyways I like mushrooms and I think fungi are cool, no need to disparage fungi like that.

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

yeah i honestly can't stand them either

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

GTP: No, a majority of fungi are not toxic or poisonous. Here's how it breaks down: There are over 100,000 known species of fungi (and estimates suggest millions more). Most fungi are harmless or beneficial — they decompose organic matter, form symbiotic relationships with plants, or are used in food (like yeast and edible mushrooms). Of the roughly 10,000 species of mushrooms, only a few hundred are edible. About 100 to 200 species are known to be toxic to humans. Only a small handful (perhaps dozens) are deadly poisonous, like Amanita phalloides (death cap). So while many mushrooms are inedible or mildly toxic, truly dangerous ones are a minority. That said, never eat wild mushrooms unless you're absolutely sure what you're picking — even experts make mistakes.

by Striking-Water 3 hours ago

Is this just the common supermarket button mushroom because they are pretty bland and generic. There are many other varieties that are better tasting and better texture.

by Relative_Routine1415 3 hours ago

Who cares what you think or anyone else thinks about mushrooms wow

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Mushrooms being a fungus is a weird reason not to want to eat them. Like, it's just a different form of life. We eat meat which is a dead animal (and eating dairy is probably my the weirdest thing we eat as humans. Other than eating it in the course of devouring a kill, I don't think any other animal seeks out the milk meant for the young of a different species). We eat veggies, which are usually dead plants or their roots. We eat fruits which are part of plants (just as mushrooms are just part of a fungus. Just as we don't eat the tree that produces the fruit, we don't eat the fungus that creates the mushroom). No life form on the planet gets away from us. Why should fungus be an exception? If it's delicious and not poisonous, we gonna eat it.

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Idk I always hated mushrooms but as I got older I realized it was just a specific species my mom used to use all the time. I'm deathly afraid of encountering it again but I've been slowly trying other mushrooms and I haven't had any that I hated. Found a few I like though! Maitake is super good!

by hirthejolie 1 hour ago

It's easy to mess them up. Ive wasted a few boxes. But there's that magic when you get them right! My favorite dish is the stuff mushrooms from red lobster, only it do mine at home now, and with the big shrooms. Still use lots of butter too.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

I love mushrooms. But I get it. Not everyone's cup of tea.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

I had a full plate of mushrooms last night.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

I feel sorry for you OP, mushrooms are some of the best food around.

by Lanky-Bug 1 hour ago

It took a long time and a decent amount of effort for my pallette to mature enough that I enjoy mushrooms. They were literally the only food I would eat around or pick off my plate, that is until I had a portabella sandwich with some kinda balsamic on it. Even then, that was an exception. ofc I would eat the nasty mushrooms that my friends gave me at the party, so I didn't understand what kept me from enjoying the culinary ones. Then I learned about the necessity of butter, spices, and aromatics. How to confit, how to dry sear, and probably most importantly how to make them into ketchup. Since then, it's been game over, no edible mushrooms are safe around me.

by SignificantKnee 1 hour ago

I don't like the texture of mushrooms either, but some of them have a good flavor.

by TimeCommunication211 50 minutes ago

Mushrooms are definitely a hate them or love them sort of food. I love them, but I can see how the texture would be off putting to others

by Anonymous 28 minutes ago

The button mushrooms commonly put on pizza are quite gross but other species of mushrooms, ie chanterelles, actually have a taste and aren't gross spongy things.
