Musical about a guy who didn't like musicals - The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Musical theater isn't meant to be taken literally. Just like a play, the audience needs a little imagination to make the magic happen. If you're just taking it at face value, you're missing the point. You're like the parent who walks through the living room when your kids are playing the-floor-is-lava and they yell at you that you're burning, but you just say, "no I'm not" and keep on walking. Musical theater is ridiculous, hilarious, symbolic, passionate, and so many things wrapped into one. It's not trying to be a movie. It's an entirely different art form that most people aren't exposed to. It's normal for someone to think, "WTF is going on?" the first few times they see musicals. But the more you go, the more you see and the more you appreciate.

Floor-is-Lava is what happens when geology, architecture, and games don't stay in their own lane. Lava is cool! Okay, literally it's HOT! but that's what makes it cool. And floors are a critical part of architecture that everything stands on. Everything falls without a floor. Games are a perfectly fine diversion from real life. I'm totally not a hard ass against people having fun. But Floor-is-Lava is just too much. I'm just walking through my house and - BAM! - I'm expected to jump up on the coffee table or burn up! How is the coffee table safe?! Nothing ruins the suspension of disbelief like a wooden coffee table providing shelter from molten rock. Are we not even mentioning the radiant heat? Everything in the living room would be on fire if it was that close to lava! Don't even get me started on the fumes!

I saw Cats in London and my jaw dropped. I hated it. People dressed as cats… It didn't work for me. Too chaotic. Like mixing entree, main and dessert in own bowl. They're supposed to be enjoyed separately.

by ComparisonJazzlike 1 day ago

I love musical theater, and I haven't actually seen Cats other than ads or random clips, but it would absolutely not be one I would bring someone not into musical theater to see.

by Purple-Narwhal 1 day ago

They're supposed to be enjoyed separately. Where does this rule come from. Also Cats is infamous for being difficult to understand.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's not a rule, I misspelled ‘I enjoy them separately'

by ComparisonJazzlike 1 day ago

That's a completely different sentence structure

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Obviously

by ComparisonJazzlike 1 day ago

That's completely different from a misspelling

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So.... you didn't "misspell" it

You picked a terrible first experience

Maybe that's what left irreparable damage

You can explain all you want, it still sucks ass

Trying to justify your dislike of musical theatre isn't necessary. Singing, acting, and dancing don't combine into some unholy trifecta of mixed media.

by Independent-Toe 1 day ago

Ok, you don't like it, but you don't have to make such a song and dance about it.

Yoooo where's this song about buying milk that everyone keeps complaining about. It sounds dope but I've literally never heard it.

by Electronic-Fudge 1 day ago

When your mom takes you to Fiddler on the Roof when you're a 7 y/o, ALL the songs sounded like people with accents singing about their village life. And that village was pretty boring and confusing despite the music. Set a bad tone for years. Then I grew up and ended up running lights and audio for a couple local productions and in the pit playing bass in a few more. The talent and hard work needed to pull off a musical that's not a complete train wreck blew my mind. Nothing but respect for musical theater from this metalhead.

by Mountain-Tennis-1345 1 day ago

No joke, I actually almost wrote a musical that included a song about buying milk just to lean in to this bizarre joke 🤣 I'm just really bad at finishing projects, so I never finished the musical. I got the skeleton of the plot and two of the songs written, though.

You're going to absolutely lose it when you learn how people told story's in ancient times

I'm with OP. I can't stand musical theatre.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Going to musical theater and being shocked they start singing and dancing.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

someone hasn't found their musical yet

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I dunno, there's something a bit special about seeing a decent musical performance in a full theatre. I once held a similar view OP, but I think more exposure to decent shows really changed my opinion. When the folks on stage get to the climax of a particularly powerful song it can be spinetingling, for them to do that while throwing shapes is impressive.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I agree with any performance in a full theater is special, but it doesn't make a musical enjoyable for me.

while I like some musical theater, I love your description. it‘s so colorful and you gave me a good laugh. especially the chef, painter and athlete. thank you for that!

bizarre pantomime of exaggerated facial contortions This is just theatre acting. It's so the person in the back row can see what the emotion of the actor is. apparently we needed their deep emotional connection to buying milk sung at us Songs can be emotional, and a song could be a good way to give a character a solid backstory, motivation, or show their feelings without using monologue (though I am partial to a good monologue). Nothing destroys suspension of disbelief quite like an entire town spontaneously knowing the same choreography That's a you problem. It's wild that you're struggling to suspend your disbelief for choreography, do you feel the same about stylized fight scenes? Plenty of people dislike musicals, but you're acting like the art form itself is flawed? It's not an unholy abomination, you're just someone who apparently can't watch anything without taking it completely literally.

the only musical I saw was hamilton performed by a relatively small hungarian team with no production budget, it was one of the best experiences I had in my life, every second of the 3 hours was great.

by Icy-Condition 1 day ago

If only you could have delivered your opinion to a jaunty tune with some choreography.

It's ok if you don't like musicals, but it should be mentioned that musical theatre is a natural extension of Opera- it isn't something that just appeared out of the blue because people didn't want to stay in their lane. Opera is arguably the more "elevated" and original form of musical theatre- but it was generally much longer (think like, 9 hours) and over time the public wanted something less intense to commit to while still getting the catharsis and beauty of the theatre. Musical theatre emerged, and gradually evolved into what we know today. It combines the acting, singing, movement, and emotion of Opera into a shorter format with a wider variety of media. Like any art form, the quality of musicals varies greatly- but in a truly great performance, you'll see actors who are able to balance all the elements of performance and perform each perfectly.
