+64 Politicians should be payed very handsomely. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They certainly shouldn't be unpaid, as they are in some states… I think people like the idea and don't realize that it guarantees that only very wealthy people with special interests can get in

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Wow this is a bad take

by Anonymous 1 day ago

How? In states where they don't pay representatives it's all businessmen the special interests because only they can afford to work a job that doesn't pay

by Anonymous 1 day ago

From what I understand representatives at the state level and federal level get paid very differently. State reps get low pay while federal representatives get paid more. So I can understand the argument that they should get paid more but not millions. I agree the businessmen and special interests are bad. I don't think our tax payer money should be paying these people over a million dollars. At that point they lose relatability to the people they should be serving in my opinion

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nobody is talking about state representatives. Take that up with your state govt.

I think it's a great idea. If you want smart honest people to do a job, you need to make it more appealing than the alternative. 174k is not a high salary for the type of person we want in those jobs (highly educated, willing to work long hours, not take bribes). The job entails 90% fundraising so that sucks, too. If we make it a job that people genuinely aspire to, then maybe the people who have it will start doing a good job.

by Distinct_Bicycle_506 1 day ago

They should aspire to do it because making a positive difference is the right thing to do not because they're chasing money. 174k doesn't sound too bad honestly, that should allow them to travel and do their job effectively.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Okay, I agree. Maybe I'm being too idealistic with my standards. There's gotta be a better way to attract non psychopaths though

We don't have average people as doctors, nurses, lawyers, scientists, educators. If you're argument is anyone who is educated and has excelled in their career should automatically paid handsomely than yes I agree, but not solely for politicians.

by braunjermain 1 day ago

most successful doctors and lawyers can earn more than a politician

Paid*

Excellent opinion from someone whose ass gets whooped by a homonym no one uses foreal lmao

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nah, they should be paid the average wage in the country, and ban any other forms of income so they are insentivised to help the poorest obtain better wages.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

i like this princple, but you know what they say: pay peanuts and get monkeys. The government is a very complex organism and I think incentivising those who would perform well in the private sector is a good idea.

by Catharine42 1 day ago

you're making sense here, which would never fly in government đŸ˜”

by Appropriate-Pen 1 day ago

I would normally have no problem with this. However, Americans are very selfish people, even if you have them that, they'd still want more, would still abuse their power and would still do insider trading

by Significant_Abies 1 day ago

Humans are selfish people. Not just Americans

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Our government is a bit worse in regards of selfishness.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sure. Americans are very selfish though.

by Big_Sprinkles9726 1 day ago

Americans CAN be very selfish. Saying they ARE selfish is generalizing all 340 million people and thats disingenuous.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

the average american is selfish enough where such a generalization applies flawlessly.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Generalizing is a necessity for conversation and people do it constantly. Americans are notably more selfish than most other cultures on Earth. It's debatably inherent to the ‘American dream' even.

by Big_Sprinkles9726 1 day ago

Yes but the argument of politicians being paid handsomely has been a terrible thing throughout time and across the globe. I understand OP may be speaking about America but it's not just an American political system issue but a human behavior issue. I don't trust anyone who earns that much money with that much influence on the day to day lives of ordinary citizens especially when they have no relatability to the everyday person

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Correct, the way i see it it's not a specific phenomenon in a specific place but a human behavior that we can hopefully learn from.

*paid

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I should be payed a million dollars

by Anonymous 1 day ago

While I do agree they need to make more it's laughable to think they should be making a million dollars and especially laughable that house members deserve more than the senate.

by norbert75 1 day ago

Unpopular in the eyes if people who dont think. Could be a good take since politics are dangerous. You always have someone trying to blackmail or trying to murder you, your country watches your every move, imense pressure because everything you do gets critisized, you cant really go out in public anymore and the same goes to your entire family. Incredibly taxing job. Not sure if more money will solve all these problems tho...

by Few-Sundae 1 day ago

I'm becoming a politician. I second this.

by Strackekennedi 1 day ago

in which country?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The United States of America. My whole campaign is built around this: Change > Comfort

by Strackekennedi 1 day ago

good luck. youll need it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

totally agree (although im not from the US and I'm not sure about the specific numbers you quoted, or the idea of putting them together in a luxury complex (maybe?)). A major added bonus of this that i think you missed is it massively decreases the allure of corruption. So not only does it swing away from purely wealthy people to more just 'high performers', it also reduces the urge of those in office to do 'extra curriculars' to get more money.

by Catharine42 1 day ago

You didn't say that well, but I still agree with what you are saying. The jobs need to pay at a level where the very skilled will want the job, and corruption isn't the motivation.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

you can give them more money than God plus all the benefits on the planet and they will still be corrupt, still steal from their own people, etc.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

nah. they should get the average median salary of their state, plus all the public benefits that may or may not actually exist. your state has a median salary of 30,000 and has no paid vacation days? tough, thats what you get.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They could all be replaced with AI. So I disagree.
