+55 people today act like silence is torture, amirite?

by Haroldgreen 1 day ago

I think for some, silence can be overwhelming as they have to sit with reality. That's definitely not the case for all, and I do think people need to just exist sometimes.

by National_Handle4413 1 day ago

You are under the impression that people can't think while engaging in such activities. Its the opposite. People are so used to having noise and multitasking that things that don't capture all their attention divide their focus. I watch tv shows while cleaning. I listen to podcasts while walking. That's because I can actually comprehend them. And not filling the time with things I can comprehend feels like a waste. Its like simply sitting. Why would I simply sit, when I could sit AND engage with something? Now don't get me wrong. Pure silence and isolation is great too. Its very relaxing especially when you're tired and exhausted. But you don't really see people when they are that tired or exhausted often, do you?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Why are you under the impression that we don't rest and reset? It just takes far less time to recharge than to spend up the energy. I said that at the end. You simply don't witness people while they are recharging.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

U need to rest from stimulation sometimes

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Of course. But everyone needs different amounts of rest depending on their activities, and their form of resting varies too. Doesn't mean people literally don't.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Okay but u need rest from stimulation sometimes at first it feels a little underwhelming but after adapting to it then it starts to feel relaxing

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Am I...talking to myself? We are resting from stimulation. We just don't need a long rest. Just because you don't witness us relaxing doesn't mean we don't. Just because we wear headphones outside listening to podcasts doesn't mean we don't have our quiet times.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I didnt say I was demanding for long rests but I mean about being able to be in silence while not feeling like it being an underwhelming thing when it is something normal to be surrounded with

by Anonymous 1 day ago

We are able to be in silence. We just don't prefer it. That's literally it. You're not a monk for being able to sit still. We all take breaks from stimulation. For me that's cooking. I don't listen or watch stuff while cooking. But literally the entirety of the rest of my day, my brain is going to be occupied with all sorts of stuff. And it doesn't tire me out. If/when it does, I simply take another break. The point is, people feel that we are unable to get away from stimulation when in reality we are able to tolerate stimulation to the point where we can spend entire day being stimulated without much problems, so they don't witness our break times. Helps me get stuff done and self educate.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I didnt say I was some sort of monk btw. But im trying to explain while u are able to be with silence and not feel underwhelmed then ur good, and if cooking is rest for you then there is no problem, its not like we are argumenting in anything concrete right now, at this point this is just answering bcs yes, because you know you are good and if you know you are good even under the things I said then why are you argumenting with me. my bad if u werent argumenting and just were talking btw

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Are you even reading what they are saying?

by Apart_Television_746 1 day ago

Yea

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Multitasking is a myth. The brain does not work better when trying to focus on more than one thing at once. That's a lie we tell ourselves to cope better.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I never said multi tasking is ideal. You are correct that focusing on one thing is going to be far more productive especially when its work related. But consider the context. Walking, cleaning, doing chores. Listening to a podcast while doing my chores doesn't hurt how fast I do my chores that badly, I don't get bored and I make more out of time. The reality is, not every activity uses your brain equally. Since its the age of information, people are used to working their brains all the time. So it doing nothing or too little is simply uncomfortable. Feels like a waste.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, that sounds like a personal experience. Listening to music, audiobooks, podcasts, etc doesn't impede my ability to think or focus.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's YOUR experience. I listen to certain types of music when I drive, or work. And it helps me think, doesn't distract

by Alone_Marzipan 1 day ago

It's addiction, and a carefully planned one

the brainwashing of consumerism and capitalism, one might say

by WhichPresent 1 day ago

This is true like I hear people saying they have there AirPods on 12 hours a day and I was like how can that be good for you?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's from over-stimulation. If they aren't looking at something or listening to something, their brain shuts down. My nephew was like that when he first moved in with us. Say we went for a car ride. He would immediately pull out his phone (he actually watched it while walking to the car and taking forever to get in) to watch videos. Any time I took it away, he would be asleep within a minute or two, because his brain wasn't being stimulated and it would just shut down. Now over a year later and we've made a lot of progress on this.

by emmiekessler 1 day ago

I think it is pretty sad. Many people just are to accustomed to it

by Any_Leader 1 day ago

Not that deep. I just like music and am happy to listen to it for 14 hours a day

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I rest my case.

by Haroldgreen 1 day ago

isn't that like a sign to talk to someone about it?

by Haroldgreen 1 day ago

Yes but therapy is expensive and I actually have a hard time opening up in person

by Zealousideal_Key 1 day ago

You may be terrified to know that a lot of people don't even have an internal monologue. They have to fill the silence because thats all it is, SILENT in their brain.

by Imaginary-Object-958 1 day ago

This is so true, atleast for me. I need to play music or something all the times... Brushing my teeth, toilet/bath, cooking, walking, riding the bus. It's like I can't function without background noise. It's not any condition but I unknowingly trained my brain. Trying to get over with this.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I spend most of my day to day life in complete silence, aside from a fan or air conditioner going to drown out everyone else's noise.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's extremely popular opinion

by Prudent_Morning 1 day ago

Definitely seeing a bit of people saying they'd rather be overstimulated

by Haroldgreen 1 day ago

I mean the fact itself that people can't handle silence and just watch at the wall without anything is becoming pretty obvious and it's a huge sign to start changing it, but because society has never been through something like this throughout history we don't know how to deal with this, I mean surely in theory we know how to rewire brain and stuff like this, but in practice it's incredible difficult to do and you just give up over and over

by Prudent_Morning 1 day ago

Also I think everything is built this way that will keep you wired, you know? And that's also the biggest problem here

by Prudent_Morning 1 day ago

It's also unnatural for me to be cloistered in a warehouse 40 hours a week. Sure the constant stimulation might be bad for my head but so is the deafening lack of stimulation Id receive otherwise.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Silence is torture because then I'm starting to overthink

by jaskolskijeanne 1 day ago

I would argue self-reflecrtion is what most people fear Because then they need to actually work on their problems, or face some worries It's why so many people need some kind of noise or conversation to sleep to now People are generally OK with silence if they are busy doing something demanding, but yeah so many people need constant dopamine It's why literacy is tanking in kids

by Anonymous 1 day ago

But they need to be able to sit with themselves without distractions to self reflect. Most people cant handle being alone.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You know, I'm gonna send this to my husband, he asks me all the time why I don't have YouTube play while I do the dishes or while I'm cooking dinner. I genuinely enjoy the silence, just letting my adhd wander and see where my brain goes. Plus, when you've lived I houses with constant noise, it's nice to have even a moment of blissful silence

by Alternative-Sand 1 day ago

I wear noise cancelling headphones to drown out the noise around me. Sometimes, especially when I'm at work or catching an early train to work, I have them switched on with nothing playing, just to enjoy the silence. Dont assume just because someone has headphones or earbuds, that there's anything playing through them.

by Aggravating_Run_2696 1 day ago

The ability to tolerate solitary silence is one of the main indicators of mental health. Unfortunately a lot of people under 30 are not very mentally healthy.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I don't like silence because I start to hear whispers.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Maybe slience is boring and ppl like to fill silence with stuff they enjoy

by Disastrous_Hat 1 day ago

Which is overstimulation

by Affectionate_Art 1 day ago

Overstimulation is individual. What you consider overstimulation might be completely fine for someone else.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think the same way as that guy does, preferring stimulation over silence, but not able to settle down for over a minute is an issue in itself

Most people talk when they have nothing to say. — Megan McCafferty

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Or I just like podcasts… is that not allowed

by Edmondoreilly 1 day ago

Where do you wait in line for 30 seconds? lmao

by barrett57 1 day ago

Agree, can't stand silence! I only shut it off when I need to think.

by AccomplishedRing2155 1 day ago

Blame it on tinnitus. Pretty much everyone has hearing damage now and the only way to survive without going insane is constant activity to drown it all out
