I can't drive 55

Because you are stuck behind OP on the highway!

No worries I saw what you did there 🤘

If you were where I lived and drove 55mph on the highway you'd be the most dangerous car on the road and youd be putting many in danger. flow of traffic matters more than the mph. If you're causing people to break and weave around you, then you're in way more state of danger than anything else lol. In fact the speed limit on highways here range from 65-75. So again, you'd be the slow poke causing more congestion, traffic, and extra merging all around you. And if you can't manage to safely drive at 70-80mph without feeling nervous then consider not driving because you're behind social standards

what makes 55 a magical number? why not 50? 60? 65? 70?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think 70 is the number where it's like anything above that is basically a death sentence if you crash lowkey

Is this based on your years of experience as an engineer or a doctor?

Depends on traffic. Once i drove home with avg of 115 miles an hour, it was 11pm, i was fresh and the highway was completely empty. For me speeding only worth it if you do it long enough. If youd rive for 3 hours the difference between 85 and 55 is huge. If traffic allows.

I don't need to weave in and out of traffic to go 80 mph! I'm just going with the flow of traffic.

I don't think there's any major roadway in my state that slow. Interstate is 80.

Be the river, not the rock. If you're doing 55 and traffic is doing 65, you're the problem. I bet you drive in the left lane, too.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You get home faster, that's worth it. Drive safe thou

Excessively speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, and frequently changing speed? Sure. But there's nothing wrong about cruising consistently at 75 or 80. In fact, the safest speed you can go is matching everyone else as much as possible, speed limit be damned. If most people are doing 75 and you're doing 55, that's less safe. It means everyone has to slow way down and/or change lanes when they get close to you. Its lane changes and speed changes that cause accidents.

I wish you drew the line at a faster speed like…80mph 55 is painfully slow with far more time to react

by Cartermelba 1 day ago

If the speed limit is 70 then driving 55 is incredibly dangerous.

It would help if you cite some numbers. Here's what I found: "President Richard Nixon agreed to a national speed limit of 55 mph for all states in 1974. After this law went into effect, America saw its traffic fatality rate drop from 4.28 per million miles traveled in 1972 to 2.73 in 1983." If I did my math right, that's a 36% improvement in safety by going slower at 55 mph. It also saves gas and would lower car insurance.

Driving 55 on the interstate is not good for my mental health, and thus not good for the safety of others around me. 70 it is, or whatever the flow of traffic is.

Agreed. It is sad that so much of what people do is based on perception and not reality.
