+77 The invention of the PB&J is likely the sole reason PB became the household staple it is today. Big jelly probably also didn't mind. amirite?

PB is a household staple in the US at least because of the depression. It's very nutritious and lasts forever.

What he said. Very cheap way to get calories and protein if you're impoverished

I don't know if it was cheap, but my mom used to make me PB and butter sandwiches. More fat and calories than plain PB, but that was in the 60's. We did have 7 people in our family so she did have to stretch that grocery money. I got very fat for some reason. I was the only one that loved those sandwiches and no one else got fat. Yes, I know why.

PB was the solution to a farmers problem. Rather peanuts were. George Washington Carver proved and pushed for nitrogen fixing legumes, aka peanuts, to be grown. Which was great for southern farmers who had over worked their fields. It was a low cost way for farmers to revitalize their fields quicker than letting it grow fallow. The peanuts had to be dealt with. PB and J was a low cost way for poor people to get decent enough nutrition at essentially pennies. The rest is marketing history.

I always figured it was because it was so much fun to eat off your partners genitals. Sandwiches are good too though
