Since perfection isn't possible, we should just let the chips fall as they may, amirite?
by Technical_Boat1 day ago
Legacy matter. It's why people do anything that our lives them. Protect the environment, have kids, fight the British.

This quote sounds so familiar, where did I hear it before?

It's what makes gladiator a good movie. Maximus had a mission and would say the second half. Primo was much more of pragmatic and would say the first. I don't think they said it to each other but it's their creed throughout in my opinion.

The human experience is more than just materials that make us up.

Fair enough, I'll be over here with the brain surgeon and engineer that decided that chips should definitively not fall as they may.

I think you're half right. Perfection isn't possible and most of the time it's better to just go with the flow Sometimes though you can make a real difference, bring things a little closer to perfection than they'd be without the effort, the trick is knowing when to pick your battles

This sounds like the opinion of someone that's not faced significant challenges or hardships in their life, and recently faced their first failure...and rather than improve and grow, they just write it all off.

People's fascination with perfection has always been weird to me. There's nothing wrong with imperfection.
by Anonymous1 day ago
It seems as though it's the only possibility.

A well-balanced person aims for perfection while understanding it's not achievable.

(Hopefully) Said no surgeons, architects/construction workers, car manufacturers, bankers, firefighters, pilots, etc. ever.

I'm pretty sure I'll be majoring in Philosophy, so I'm right in line.
by Technical_Boat1 day ago
No, respectfully, you are not in line with these examples at all. I don't want a surgeon to be doing surgery on me with errors being potential death and decide to "ride the wave" over perfection, nor do I want someone building my home to not be perfect at their craft, or someone making a car that is a large death machine speeding down a road to not be perfect with their assembly for safety reasons, or bankers to not be perfectly accurate with their math and work in general when handling money, or firefighters going with the flow when trying to save lives, or pilots being anything other than perfect at flying to make sure we don't crash and burn from the sky. A philosophy major "riding the wave" isn't going to have a negative effect on anyone else.

Perfection is when you ride the wave correctly.
by Taurean891 day ago
What's the correct way to ride the wave?
by Technical_Boat1 day ago
I have no idea. I should have bought bitcoin.
by Taurean891 day ago
Some it's impossible to be 100% safe on the road, I may as well drive like a drunk maniac

Sounds fun.

There is no watching it play out youre an illogical machine run by instincts. What would watching it play out even entail? Oh no, a snake is at my foot. Luckily, im enlightened, so I will simply see how this plays out.

Well as I see it, all you can really call "you", is the awareness that never changes. What many people hold so dearly to is just an ever-changing string of sensations such as noises, temperature, and light. I think the realization that you cannot affect your future and all you can do is notice the voice on the TV, etc., really gives you a sense of calm and is certainly something you can carry on into the future.
by Technical_Boat1 day ago
If you settle for mediocracy you can never achieve more. If you aim for perfection you can reach a little lower than that

The only people ive ever met that have this mindset are people privileged with the fact they only have to worry about themselves and no others.
