VR will revolutionize how people communicate, amirite?
by Anonymous1 day ago
I've been hearing this since "The Lawnmower Man." I have yet to see any actual evidence of it in the real world, despite tens of billions having been spent by countless parties on the technology since.

To be fair, "The Lawnmower Man" also taught us that connecting to the internet can fix mental disabilities, get you ripped, and ring every phone on the planet.

Nice try Zuckerberg, but the metaverse is long dead now.

Why would we need a full simulation when you can just project a 2d image at 1000th of the cost?

We evolved to communicate face to face, not through a 2D image. The sense of connection and closeness is much higher in 3D.

lol vr is just not viable until the technology gets way better and way cheaper.
by kleintrycia1 day ago
There is literally no reason to think this. VR has existed in one shape or another for decades already, and it still hasn't revolutionized anything. This will not happen.

VR is in its infancy. No hardware technology ever invented in history has revolutionized anything in its infancy. Only when things mature does that happen.

Velcro?
by Anonymous1 day ago
Velcro isn't hardware tech.

Hardware refers to tangible equipment used in construction, machines, or any built good Technology refers to the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, encompassing tools, processes, and systems that humans develop to solve problems and achieve goals.

You could say the same thing about AI, but look how far ChatGPT has come.
by Anonymous1 day ago
on the flip side Whatever benefits future VR tech can bring to health can also be used for the opposite. If anything, the opposite will be far worse than fairy tale ideas you have of VR. People are already imagining shoving ads into your brain if we get brain implants. What makes you think future VR tech won't be far more exploitive of people.

All devices have their downsides. I personally think VR has more up than down. I'm only talking about glasses/headsets here rather than brain implants.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Nah. Nobody looks cool in a vr headset.

But no one wants to be face to face with another person anymore. They wanna text.

Okay, listen. I currently own a lot of tech for one reason of another. All major current game systems. Ive spend years buying different things at different points in time. I say this illustrate that I like tech. Any form of VR, Quest 2/3, PS VR, Occulus Rift I dont see the point in owning it. Thats coming from someone who got a 3ds xl from a friend instead of just emulation three years ago. VR has nothing I care about. Sorry but I dont have social anxiety. If i want to go to a concert ill go. If I want to play chess id get out my board or invite a friend to an online game of 5D chess with multiverse time travel in Steam. I generally dont like video calls what makes you think I want holo-esque calls. Besides the tech will always lame. We got zero development in VR tech and somehow in 5 years time we'll have holo calls from our phones?

I'm a big fan of VR, my Steam VR has over 1800 hours. But I don't see that. A lot of the stuff you are describing already exists. Minus the realistic avatars. But I don't think people even want those realistic avatars. Just download VRChat if you want to take a look.

I think AR, with the right implementation, has a shot at being deeply integrated with our lives. I don't feel the same about VR. Majority of people just dont want to be isolated from the environment around them or hang out in virtual spaces. I dont think pseudo AR with passthrough really solves that feeling either. They dont want to see the world around them through cameras. But AR, with glasses where you're just seeing the world around as you normally would with virtual components integrated into it has potential. That actually has potential to be useful and enhance daily activities. Xreal is probably the best implementation we've seen so far but still has long way to go, especially on the software side.

I was playing with VR 30 years ago... I have yet to see anything spectacular enough with the current offerings that will somehow sway the masses. It's already a complete flop on most of the money making fronts. The adoption rate is pretty low to stagnant at best. People just don't want it and aren't interested.
