Getting second is probably just as good as first place. amirite?

The way I took it, is that OP is saying "Getting second is just as good as winning, SO WHY do you only get less of a prize and way less recognition?" Which hey, yeah. If you lost by 0.01 of a second... that's really worth a million dollars less than the other dude?

Yes it is because that's the payout for prizes that's settled and agreed on in contracts. And it's something that exists in most sports as the incentive for winning and being the champions. Look at MLB. In every playoff game sets aside a percentage of gate sales for the 2 championship playing teams as a player pool. In 2023 that meant the rangers got as an org got $35.8M for winning vs the Diamond Backs getting $25.9M for coming in second. So those shares were paid out to players and team staff at $506K per person on the rangers and $313K per person imin the diamond backs. In F1 the 1st place team for the constructor championship wins $140M prize money and the 2nd place gets $131M. At the highest professional levels the difference between first and 2nd is worth millions especially when you consider things like sponsorship and merch sales that are generated as a result.

That's not an opinion. That's the question of a child who wanders into a movie in the middle of it.

I mean on a technical level. Like if you look at it deeper.

If you ain't first you're last.

"The true meaning of coming second place is not defeat. It means there is only one man left to beat." A wise man once said.

Because no one remembers the second place people. That's the gap. Remembered, or forgotten.

I agree in that first place is first among the people who participated at that given time at that moment in history. Only that moment on the mat, swimming pool or field matters to earn that medal. Look up Yusuf Dikec though. In the recent Olympics history, he's the most memorable second place shooter. He got viral after having minimal equipment, looking like he just rolled out of bed, your friendly uncle.

I only ever feel that way if it was one-sided. If a dude got me by like one point or caught me with something impressive and we had a good match, I can't even be mad. It's when you just get flattened out and manhandled that it feels bad after. I'm just in it for the love of the game though, so that's only my personal mentality.

I agree in that it would suck if you were say 0.01seconds difference in a race, but the difference is like five or six figures of reward. But if you came second by over 10 minutes? did you earn the same reward? If no, where is the line? Does the same line apply to all sports?

I think I agree with this. We should rank the positions somehow so we know for sure.

While I agree that in terms of ability, there's really not much that separates first and second place, or even first place and 25th. Accolades, recognition, and money are largely just motivators for achievement. If I were running a race and the prize for second place was almost as much as the prize for first place, I probably wouldn't care too much about getting first place.

Because there's first place (the winner) of a competition and every other person lost. If it's a competition to see who's the best, there's "the best" and everyone who isn't the best. What sport in the world celebrates second place?
