I just watched it for the first time yesterday! I loved it, but I definitely get the problem with the story, and the music is very up to personal taste. I'd put it next to How to Train Your Dragon or Kung-Fu Panda. Not the deepest or best paced story, but everything else is incredible, and the whole thing just hits right. Strong disagree on the characters though! The main romance was maybe a tiny bit forced, but the main three girls were great, and their friendship was extremely believable to me
