+72 The terms "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" don't make sense after passing a certain age, amirite?

Im going to assume anyone who says "manfriend" or "womanfriend" has never once talked to the opposite sex in their life.

Shades of The Glass Menagerie and Laura's "Gentleman Caller" ….

Manfriend sounds more childish and cringe than boyfriend. I think "partner" is fine. Life partner is straight out 1998.

Partner is still sufficient to describe this scenario though. Almost nobody gets into a relationship planning on it ending at a specific point.

"The words boy and girl imply the person in question is either very young or not an adult yet at least." To you it does.

Unpopular because you're wrong about the socially accepted definition of the terms. What they imply, is a committed relationship, that proceeds an engagement.

a committed relationship, that proceeds an engagement. Precedes.

Someone's jealous of other people in relationships.

Partner is the best name for this situation. Life partner would probably be for an already married couple.

It's not about the people being young or immature, it's the relationship that is still young and immature. So the relationship is labeled at first with terms highlighting that phase. You're a BOYfriend or GIRLfriend because it hasn't gotten serious enough to label it directly as partner or spouse/husband/wife or whatever else

Just use partner

"Partner" solves any perceived issue here and is really starting to stick. Such a great catch-all.

This is a feature not a bug to encourage people to progress past this stage into the commitment of marriage

i agree with your point, don't much like the proposed alternatives (not that I can come with any better of my own though).

"M'lady." Tips fedora

Agreed. I call my girlfriend my wife, she refers to me as her husband; neither of us want to be approaching 50 and saying meet my boy/girlfriend. Nobody has ever asked us to prove it and it saves answering questions like "why aren't you married yet?" (Because that has been asked).

I dont think that's a problem with the word, it just sounds infantile because adults used to finish dating and get married by their 20s and now people cant figure that out anymore, so they're stuck living like a college student into their 40s

Yeah people should for sure settle down earlier in their lives instead of doing with feels right for them!

I totally agree, but in the US at least, women often get referred to as girls. I watch a lot of true crime and when people state "A young girl was killed" I instantly assume, they are talking about a 5 year old child, but no. They refer to women in their twenties as young girls.
